I knew about some of this just from reading the right kind of books. I have heard of the use of heroin has gone up on the media news. So most of this is at no suprise to me. why are the taliban being caught with U.S weapons? THe same reason the "enemy" Iran was caught with U.S. weapons during the iran-contra scandal. The U.S SOLD THEM TO THEM. Thats why. The reason the Taliban have US weapons is 1) because they have intercepted many US supply convoys and 2) because they have overrun a number of US forward operating bases. Most of these incidents are not reported in the press. The CIA are trying to buy off some Taliban elements, hence the schmoozing. The US have done deals with the Northern Alliance villians who are way worse than the Taliban, so I don't know what the big hoo-ha is all about.

I was in Afghanistan. The Taliban are religious fanatics who have their ideals but the Northern Alliance and other criminal factions are absoloute barbarians. The NA and the Afghan army are rapists and drug addicts but the Taliban don't do that. But hey, I know the NA were the 'good guys' once but then so was Saddam at one time, even Osama was a hero of the CIA in '87. Remember the Taliban were guests of Bush in Texas in 2000? Funny how quickly they 'went bad'? Or was that just the media spin?

Nah, they use the legal stuff for that. I used to live among the poppy fields in Tasmania. Seriously, thousands of acres of legal opium poppies grown for the pharmaceutical industry.
