@hipcab they have neck guards, but they're optional so most players opt to not wear them which is ridiculous...you're wearing how much protection and padding already? a neck guard on top of that is nothing. they just look like a turtle neck from a sweater or something. i'm pretty sure they're mandatory for goalies, but i could be wrong...

@PookeoResurrected1 Ya, a very sad story, and the reason there is the Masterson trophy handed out each year to the player that most exemplifies perseverance and dedication to the game of hockey.
He died 2 days later in hospital as a result of a bodycheck and his head hitting the ice with such force, players on the bench heard the crack as his head made contact with the ice....
That was late 60's, with no mandatory helmet rule in effect.
It took almost 2 more decades before it would ..

@hipcab they have neck guards, but they're optional so most players opt to not wear them which is ridiculous...you're wearing how much protection and padding already? a neck guard on top of that is nothing. they just look like a turtle neck from a sweater or something. i'm pretty sure they're mandatory for goalies, but i could be wrong...

@hipcab Someone have, A player in Mora IK in Sweden died around in the 90'. He bled out on the ice if remember correctly. After this, we have a rule in sweden that says you have to use neckguards.

Skating straight to the bench saved his life. The pressure applied by the towel was probably all that kept him from bleeding out. You cut the jugular and it's pretty much instant death. That's how lions kill their prey.
Glad he was able to come back from it.
