These are two of the all time greatest visual artists. Miyazaki never fails to bring a smile to my face. Moebius creates such unique worlds that you feel could truly exist. I salute the both of you!
I have no idea why Hayao Miyazaki is dubbed Walt Disney of Japan. I am a little irritated. Miyazaki is Miyazaki! He has never copied the works produced by Disney. He should be more appreciated as a person who cannot be replaced by anyone. He is a national treasure of Japan.
@MurphyColemanyou got it wrong, he is dubbed the walt disney of japanese animation because he is very walt disney like in terms of animation, art and storytelling. his films are like the japanese equivalent of snow white, little mermaid and aladdin. thats why people equate him to disney, he's never copied any disney works.
@th3azscorpio There is no doubt that Walt Disney was one of the most distinguished animators and entertainers in history. The fact that as early as 1930s, extremely sophisticated and magnificent animated films such as Silly Synphony series(I like "Flowers and Trees" in particular) were released is surprising. What Disney created at the time overwhelmed us. No one all over the world is comparable to him. Hayao Miyazaki was born in 1941, so he may have been a little affected by Disney's works.
tell me that some one also things that for hayao miyazaki's next movie he should do an kingdom hearts thing not rip it off all the way but something simalir come on it would be awsome who else agrees
Miyazaki is the king of imagination, he captures so much from mental pictures, dreams and emotions and turns them into reality. He is a living Legend and will always and forever continue living because his work and inspiration will live forever.
I had never heard of this man until a little while ago, but my friends say he is the Tolkien of japanamation. I never liked that kind of cartoon so if anyone can convince me otherwise, I trust it will be him.
@mrdropkicker1 More like the Walt Disney of Japan even though he doesen't like to be called that. I only say that because his films are just as big some even bigger than Disney films and Disney was we all know was and always will be the heart and soul of American cartoons. Miyazaki's anime is the heart and soul of Japan.
@mrdropkicker1 in my country (France), before the international success of Spirited Away, medias were giving him little credit and didn't recognized the talent he have, because they had clichés about japan animation (they judged it too violent or stupid)
Nowadays, it's one of the countries were Ghibli films are the most appreciated (take a look at allociné.fr, all his films have the highest star ranks for "critiques presse" (press reviews)
I thought Ponyo was an inferior work in terms of plot, but I definitely made me feel very happy. Studio Ghibli is a win factory, constantly churning out epics.
I think that the difference between Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks and studio Ghibli is that they think animation will be for mainly a children's audience with their parents, so it can't be pretty scary or too weird. But the movies by Ghibli take children seriously and know that you dont have to handle childrens movies with velvet gloves. Though it might play a role too that there is so much parental screening of movies in the US, as with finding Nemo (they almost removed that scary lighting fish)
@Foundlilly11 the thing about Studio Ghibli films is that there's a deeper meaning under the surface, kids and some adults can see them and have no problem understanding, but usually they don't observe the small things in the film that hold a great significance. Take Spirited Away for example.

@xy274 Actually, Japan's death rate in regards to smoking is quite low, although they have more smokers than America. Fat cells give rise to free radicals, which are stimulated by smoking, however smoking simply by itself is a low health risk. I'm sure sugar is worse for you than cigarette smoke.
@superearthbender Are you saying americans are fat!? Lol...I agree, Yet, our educational system only provides us with 3gym days....I wish we had more.....
@xy274 I'm not so sure. I love walks, but I hated gym, it was too confined and they didn't have a set system for making the person healthier, aside from traditional "excercises" which weren't didn't last but 10 push ups a day.
I think it's more diet related. But anyway, not to devour the comment section.
@xy274 the good thing is that I lived in japan for a while and altho japanese people smokes alot, they actually only smoke part of the cigarrete and use strong filters, hopefully he does that...but true wish he didn't....
@Sunnymoonshine15 Miyazaki does too smoke. He's a somewhat heavy smoker you can see in other videos that he smokes. He even smokes while he is drawing.

Although, sometimes I like to reminisce about the old 90's children shows in America before there was all that Spongebob stuff and other bizarre comical shows everywhere that seem BAD for children. I miss how heartfelt things were back then...
@AkumaUchitoru Well Princess Mononoke and Nausica aren't mature films. There for older kids not younger but there not mature. There is a different between mature movies and movies for teens. Mature have nothing but major violence, major blood, nude people all that stuff. @AkumaUchitoru No matter how bad your life sucks you should never regret not being born into your family. No matter what you are or where you are from. It would be interesting to be japanese but hey we all can't and im perfectly happy with my life. I was born and raised as a catholic I will always have that in me I won't ever regret not being one. But I can now on my own free will be whoever I want which is why im staying in USA to be with my family make comics in manga style.
@BanditClod It is called Princess Mononoke. Remember, we are whole people, not two halfs. The light with the dark. That is the art of Princess Mononoke.
An ordinary person just says he is a genius. But he just have been a curious for interesting than them you know. Just saying genius is not evaluation for him I think.
Shame that Americans won't watch his films today because he works on anime, which has gotten somewhat of a bad rep here in the States. I wish people weren't so bigoted.
not that i care if anyone smokes, but i really want him to live for a long time so i can meet him one day, or for even a chance to have more of his movies produced. but hey, we all got our vices :(
@shockinbros i agree with you. The films that he has made so far are so genius and have qualities of masterpieces that i think even if he passes away at an "early" age, he will be remembered for the amazing work he has done, and the contributions of innovative thinking to this world.
i love you Miyao Miyazaki your my inspiration, the first movie I ever watched was Howl's Moving Castle, and that seems to have been what got me to watch a lot more of your movies. I LOVE THEM ALL :D such a genius. they help me keep dreaming of good ideas instead of bad. thank you(:
Didn't know Miyazaki's such an emo guy...no wonder there's this sense or darkness in his films @ times. I really applaud him for what he tries to convey in his films, especially about the stereotype of baddies, and to give a sense of hope to children despite his own pessimism. Now I don't feel so lonely having this same kind of thinking. To think he had that too! =O
I like the concept of Mr. Hayao Miyazaki because it talks about environment. because of him I love japan now (in the time of My Neighbor Totoro)..i love it. It is so clean and there's a lot of tree it so incredible
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
miyazaki is overrated. yes he's good, but he is certainly not better than many other anime drectors. the only real difference is that he writes the sort of sappy family melodramas that have mass appeal.
@mittROMNEY666 woah nelly, i don't know what directors you have in mind. I LOVE miyazaki. I'm always so amazed with a miyazaki movie. What directors would you recommend?
Oh yeah, and his movies definitely have mass appeal, but i don't think it's really a sacrifice for anything. Well, maybe the environment WOULD just stay destroyed at the ends of his flicks if he didn't try and make them sappy, but besides that, i think they're still loaded with good themes and maturity n all that.
@sockrocker117 Otomo, Kawajiri, Oshii, and Hideaki Anno are all at least as good as Miyazaki. Certainly their films feature more dynamic action and creative camera angles. Miyazaki has a pretty subdued, conservative style.I also like Toyoo ashida, giant robo, battle angel and afro samurai. Miyazaki is just one amongst many. The difference is his family themes allow him to reach a broader audience than his contemporaries, particularly in the us thanks to his distribution deal with disney.
@mittROMNEY666 Ah, well I'm not too interested in technical ability- which Miyazaki still has plenty of. His ability to set a mood and ellicit emotion is what makes him so dayum good. Plus, I think a lot of his contemporaries negate people's humanity. There's a sort of hyper quality in a lot of other people's work that I think represents more of a sellout to public demand than Miyazaki's slow paced, naturalist style. His sappiness has more relevance for most people than other folks' hyper-art.
@mittROMNEY666 Oooh, I've seen some of the guys' stuff you mentioned (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Steamboy and Afro Samurai). I loved those too, particularly Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and I would be a liar to say that I don't get a thrill from the violent bits. I love their themes- things about consciousness and human potential and things- but Miyazaki just gets me right in the heart, haha. These styles kinda' portray people's duality. Sometimes mean, or tender.
Miyazaki is one of the notable geniuses of animation, I am trying to make it into the industry, and watching his work is my main source of inspiration.
I never met him, never seen him, I don't know him personally, but I hold the highest respect for him and to be honest only a few people would I ever respect in terms of impacts or personality. He made me a huge fan of anime Spirited Away was the first film I saw but Princess Mononoke was my favorite. Thank you.
@Swiftlygothedays I get what your saying by saying it is epics and they are awesome but an epic in literature or film is a long story about a hero giving hope to people. He doesn't make epics but his movies are epic. :D
Miyazaki-san is pessimistic yet can still show wonderful human actions to his films... How can he control those emotions is unbelievable. He's definitely a GEnius.

But I can now on my own free will be whoever I want which is why im staying in USA to be with my family make comics in manga style.

@BanditClod It is called Princess Mononoke. Remember, we are whole people, not two halfs. The light with the dark. That is the art of Princess Mononoke.

Moebius is great artist.
He had big influence on Hayao Miyazaki and Katsuhiro Otomo.

A true Miyazaki/Disney collaboration would be the pinnacle of animation.
Alas, only in my dreams.

If Osamu Tezuka is the Walt Disney of Anime, then Hayao Miyazaki-san is the Stanley Kubrick of anime.

miyazaki is overrated. yes he's good, but he is certainly not better than many other anime drectors. the only real difference is that he writes the sort of sappy family melodramas that have mass appeal.
mittROMNEY666 1 year ago
@mittROMNEY666 woah nelly, i don't know what directors you have in mind. I LOVE miyazaki. I'm always so amazed with a miyazaki movie. What directors would you recommend?
Oh yeah, and his movies definitely have mass appeal, but i don't think it's really a sacrifice for anything. Well, maybe the environment WOULD just stay destroyed at the ends of his flicks if he didn't try and make them sappy, but besides that, i think they're still loaded with good themes and maturity n all that.
sockrocker117 1 year ago
@sockrocker117 Otomo, Kawajiri, Oshii, and Hideaki Anno are all at least as good as Miyazaki. Certainly their films feature more dynamic action and creative camera angles. Miyazaki has a pretty subdued, conservative style.I also like Toyoo ashida, giant robo, battle angel and afro samurai. Miyazaki is just one amongst many. The difference is his family themes allow him to reach a broader audience than his contemporaries, particularly in the us thanks to his distribution deal with disney.
mittROMNEY666 1 year ago
@mittROMNEY666 Ah, well I'm not too interested in technical ability- which Miyazaki still has plenty of. His ability to set a mood and ellicit emotion is what makes him so dayum good. Plus, I think a lot of his contemporaries negate people's humanity. There's a sort of hyper quality in a lot of other people's work that I think represents more of a sellout to public demand than Miyazaki's slow paced, naturalist style. His sappiness has more relevance for most people than other folks' hyper-art.
sockrocker117 1 year ago
@mittROMNEY666 Oooh, I've seen some of the guys' stuff you mentioned (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Steamboy and Afro Samurai). I loved those too, particularly Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and I would be a liar to say that I don't get a thrill from the violent bits. I love their themes- things about consciousness and human potential and things- but Miyazaki just gets me right in the heart, haha. These styles kinda' portray people's duality. Sometimes mean, or tender.

I never met him, never seen him, I don't know him personally, but I hold the highest respect for him and to be honest only a few people would I ever respect in terms of impacts or personality. He made me a huge fan of anime Spirited Away was the first film I saw but Princess Mononoke was my favorite. Thank you.

Miyazaki doesn't make movies. He makes epics.
You can call anything a movie. You can't call everything an epic.

@Swiftlygothedays I get what your saying by saying it is epics and they are awesome but an epic in literature or film is a long story about a hero giving hope to people. He doesn't make epics but his movies are epic. :D
