  • "We got the rice!"

    "We got the money!"

    <3!

  • pretty funny stuff!

  • Her material is original. That helps.

  • yeah, because you never hear latin and asian stand up comics talk about their parents using a stereotypical impression that would get a white comic crucified

  • we use stereotypical impressions of our own; no one would crucify white comics for playing stereotypes of yourself--no one does! plus ur comment isn't necessarily true *see sarah silverman. moreover, i take ur point on originality but to claim a subaltern voice as an outcome is quite a leap, considering you're speaking of a false double standard in the case of silverman. hence your comment reads: "but i want to stereotype minorities" or "god, i'm so oppressed by minorities" REALLY?!?!?! Really?

  • that comment might make sense if 80% of black comics weren't hacks who do their "black guys walk like this. white guys walk like this" impression, something that only offends me because of how contrived and uninsightful it is, like every latin or asian comic doing bits about their parents. of course there are white comics like Louis CK who does racial stuff brilliantly, but the caliber of a white comics needs to be so much higher for some reason,or else its racist. im talking just addressing race

  • Fact Check: Louis CK isn't white, he's an Irish-Mexican jew. Also, notice, I am not defending black comics who point out black/white dichotomies. It's no news that bigotry is not exclusively white. Also note, racial comedy is inherently part of the overarching racial discourse dating back centuries, which cannot be divorced from the perpetrators (mainly white america) of slavery, genocide, colonialist, AND racial ideals. Hence: Yeah, whites have power, but also responsibilities. Take both.

  • i don't want either, i just want to make fun of people. and i know louis's dad is part mexican, but he obviously looks white and he would never say he isn't white.he does a bit on how great being white is despite white people being no better than anyone,as well as stuff dissecting words like nigger and cunt, which is what i was referring to. and your bringing up slavery and colonialism is the exact reason the state of race in america blows.people who aren't racists still feel guilty

  • tons of latina/os look white, that don't mean you can claim them. 'sides louie doesn't claim whiteness (see interview on fresh air) only white privilege. i know not wanting power (read privilege) would mean not accepting responsibility, but that's not ur choice--it's what you were born into, as much as i was, and i will claim my positionality with all its historic references and it's not my job to try to ease white guilt by claiming that these histories don't affect current racial disparities

  • not only are you just not easing it, you are doing the polar opposite and perpetuating it. we look at the caste system in india and say "well, thats pretty fucking stupid," but act like we have no idea how to realize its all irrelevant, because it's easy. if it weren't for racism, a lot of people wouldn't have an identity, and they force it on other people by saying "i can mock whatever i want, but you're still the bully." very rarely can you prove you aren't a racist and its silly

  • the silly thing here is the implication that i'm perpetuating white guilt because i speak frankly on issues of race; i say it's not my job to ease it 'cause i'm not a member of that community. i don't know what's like to know my ancestors gave smallpox infested blankets to the natives 'cause they thought they were "stupid." but let's about perpetuation, you claim "we" think the caste system is stupid--why? 'cause it doesn't fit western models of identity?

  • since when do we get to dictate how human cultural identity needs to be performed? by whose standards and why? it's a matter of power and your judgment is not irrelevant, it exactly what the u.s. gov't did when they handed those "gift" blankets to the natives. i disagree: if it weren't for racism, a lot of people wouldn't have marginalized identities, which is something different altogether. we'd embrace human difference instead of trying to assimilate other cultures to western ideals

  • and my point wasn't judging other cultures. my point is how there is no self reflection in this country and no one gives a shit about the context of anything anymore. although it happened, the government killing off the native americans should have no bearing on a joke. censorship used to try to prevent violence or chaos like yelling Fire in public, but now people think its abused to protect people from hurt feelings and a ridiculous culture has spawned out of it over the past 10 years or so

  • i agree with you on the pc thing, but one thing that also needs to be considered is: there is not one vantage point in this scenario. what may be funny to you may not be to another for a variety of reasons, including historic context of racial relations, and we can't invalidate their life experience in this conversation. transcendence (post-racial) is a good thing, if at all possible. but everyone moves at their own pace; i cannot be told what to do or how to react when the situation arises

  • also, transcendence is possible. for instance, knowing what i know of you via this convo, i, personally, would not be offended by a joke that aims at MY ethnic identity, but not my ethnicity as a whole (plus, generalities never make for a good joke)-"god is in the details" they say. but that's cause i know you're coming from a good place, one that is open to this discussion, which btw has been an absolute pleasure to have with you. quite stimulating and rewarding, to the both us I hope. peace

  • now, in terms of saying "i can mock whatever I want..." yeah, i never defended this practice. as a matter of fact, if you note my previous comments i said that this only proves that bigotry isn't exclusively white. and you have every right to defend your culture and the stereotypes the "black comedian" uses to degrade you; but if you have this right, i have as much right to react to racial representations that are not coming from within my community. which also leads me to the next point

  • have you ever stopped to consider that you're not necessarily the target audience for the joke? i happen to find cristela's stereotyping of her mom funny because I identify with it, that's not to say she hasn't given you an invitation to identify; it's just, the invitation doesn't say: you can stereotype my mom, too. you can stereotype other cultures, many comedians do, but at this point be prepared to defend ur choices without saying "well, she's doing it, why can't I?" that's simply non-unique

  • thats why she bugs me, that the only reason anyone would call her a good comic is because they would say "OH MAN! she's speaking right to me!" It's how Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy are speaking to a sea of trucker hats and red white and blue button up dress shirts. i suppose i really not coming from a position of white people wanting to say nigger and stuff like that. that's just dumb. i guess i just like comics who try to transcend things, and being PC is the death of that

  • with identification comes division (i identify with this and this is not that)--this is the nature of jokes, and human language across cultural boundaries, in terms of capitalizing on this? yeah--i just don't follow their comedy, but i don't blame them for playing this card. does it create divisions? Yup, but not more than the ones already existed. transcendence is quite a beautiful thing, but divisions create hierarchies and racial hierarchies is a sensitive issue given the historic context

  • i know you shouldn't ignore history, but when the situation has gone so far into the positive that it's like innocent people getting the death penalty in a lot of areas, there has to be a point where you go "well, that stuff in the past might as well have not even happened." why carry the torch just because we simply still look like people who did awful things. people do repeat history, but I can't really see slavery in america being one of them

  • and if you can get away with white privilage, you're white. its just passing. if a pencil got stuck in your hair in the 50s, you had to go to the back of the bus. the driver didn't care about your family tree. that's generally what racism means

  • i agree with arn0ldaar0n. duude, i want to throw her in a trash can.
