Simply a great video and loved the sound track.. nice work! I am about to buy an FPV system at 900 mHz. Where did you buy your gear? I'm looking at RangeVideo and ReadymadeRC. Also, should I get a 3 db patch antenna along with the standard dipole that comes with the receiver? Thanks and superb video!
So with this FPV, just like you are in the cockpit and don't worry about orientation then as long as you fly the heli in the cockpit as you fly the tail?
What the model of the goggle , wireless video system and mounting should I get to setup like this?
Great vid and very nice flying! What's the most possible limit on distance one could get out of an RC heli? I know you've mentioned YOU can get about 1024(meters) or 0.6 miles away...but what about w/the right gear and right conditions? One thing I hate about electric helis is the limited flight time..(10+/- minutes) 5/5 stars!
My best fairly accurate distance is 1000M but the Spektrum DX7 and AR9000 should give at least 1 mile if you have enough altitude to get a clear signal. Use a patch antenna attached to the DX7, that worked well for me. Yea 10min is about max flight time, gassers give 40-min.
was doing a bit of research today and found a thread on RCGROUPS where someone has used a custom UHF setup to get about 6 miles in their flying. While it's geared towards planes, I read it should work w/helis w/out issue. Definitely something worth checking out. Thanks for reply!
That exists already but not in a "off the shelf" arrangement. You "hack" the goggles so you have two vid inputs too the two screens instead of one input. You need two cameras and two video transmitters on the airframe, and two video recievers. The 3D effect is greater when the cameras are far apart, such on the end of each wingtip for fixed wing airframes. Check the FPV forums its all in there.
how far can you fly those things till you lose signal, and what happens when it does? i been wanting to buy a heli, for years, but never knew what would be a good heli, where you do get the FPV gear,? thanks!
I have an eagletree OSD with GPS and so far the furthest LOS I've been was 1024 meters. I was 400' AGL. When you loose signal it drops from the sky, but I keep an eye on my RSSI signal strength using the OSD so I know when I'm getting out of range. I got the gear on ebay.
Flying rc helicopters FPV is great! Otherwise you have to stay close. Boring unless your in to 3-D. I rather fly this way in FPV. Can fly the distance, get some altitude. Come on over to Bennet in Vegas and look for downed airplanes in the wetlands. Great video!
I would love to have a go at FPV one day. Do you find you get much of an issue with the video lagging behind the heli's real position / orientation leading to over compensation?
Nope! Video is 100% real-time and zero lag. I am keenly aware of when the picture begins to degrade though, meaning I'm flying out of range or getting close to a source of interference. It's hard to see but there are power lines off to the east, if I get closer than 1/4 mile I get a LOT of interference.
Yep, I use fiberglass 335mm blades at 2800rpm. To get these ground speeds you need to spin the head really fast. I check over EVERYTHING VERY CAREFULLY before and after every flight like this. I've found problems several times and am glad I did!
So far I have been able to fly slightly over 1km using a 5db omni whip for the transmitter and an AR9000 RX with two remote receivers. Video is perfect as I use two 8db patch antennas on the ground. One RH and one LH polarized 8db patch, each going to a seperate RX then fed into an Oracle diversity video switch. I'm very comfortable flying within 1km but alt must be at least 400' AGL at that distance.
Have your idle-up set with a flatter pitch curve and at least a 2800rpm head speed. Test gradually, eventually at a certain speed you will "balloon" up, that's your speed limit. Reduce the pitch and you may be able to go faster. I average about 60mph based on pacing passing cars.
Wooaa! Very cool and fast flying. I hope to be doing this stuff very shortly, I've switched from a 3DX450 to 3DX500, this will carry my FPV gear with ease ;-)
I'm flying a stock Align T-rex 450 SE V2. The onboard video is sent down to the ground station via a 900mhz tx. I'm controlling the heli with a Spektrum DX7. But that was 6-months ago. I now fly with a custom build radio module from a fellow in Denmark. I'm assembling a UAV platform also.
Hi I was just wondering what you were using to power your HeadPlay goggles in the field?

Great! Really good flying as well! I normally hate that type of music, but it really suited the video.

Carefull! In the FPV world we have found the Spektrum gear is usually no good past about 2500 feet... great flying though!

another great video and track! just imagine what it'll be like if they produce 3D camera/headsets for rc helicopters!!!
