Can someone fill me in on what part of that was graphic? If you can't comfortably talk in a rational manner about the human body or religion you need to go back to middle school.
Great video but I have one minor quibble: it's a shame that the state still has the power to execute people. I'd be much happier if they tried to educate the murderers of Matthew Shepard if possible to overcome their hate (along with some punitive jail time) and if they couldn't, that they simply be isolated from society until they die. I think Matthew Shepard's parents agreed.
I agree that Dan should be more out in the public eye....his honest take is something that needs to be heard by the masses. Not just as a gay man but also as an openly sexual being who GETS that people are not what society accepts easily as "normal".
"as a catholic school boy we hadn't been informed about this thing called the clitoris, and suddenly it was my job to tell straight guys where that thing was and how to hi..... use it"
To be perfectly clear, if african-americans want to go out of their way to marginalize other people, then they deserve no quarter. When someone like Alveda King or Alan Keyes declares that gay people don't deserve rights at all, then they should be rightly flogged up and down the nation by everyone, especially by african-americans. Fortunately, most african-americans appear to be sympathetic to rights and equality for people other than themselves.
I know people don't really understand it, but it isn't racist to point at a black person and say 'That black person just screwed me over!'. It's racist to point at a black person and say 'Black people have screwed me over in the past, so I hate you!'
African-American christians voted in far greater numbers for prop 8 than the general population. Why is it racist to point that out?
It's disgusting that people are aloud to wear those shirts with the scriptures that say toput gays to death yet if someone wore something racist or anything against Christianity then they do something?!
@PolytheisticDeities Who would do something? In the United States, it's completely legal and an individual's right to be a racist. If you want to wear a racist shirt, then by all means do so. No one can stop you from being a racist. Has anyone stopped the Klu Klux Klan? No. Did Dan Savage go to jail after writing his racist screed? No. Don't worry, you can still be a racist in America, it's your individual choice! Have at it! The First Amendment gives you that right!
@plutogirllovekj His "screed" was a reaction to all the African Americans who voted to take away the rights of GLBT people. Overstated, maybe, but within the circumstances understandable.
As a bi-racial 21 year old Christian woman who used to read Dan's column's daily, though I'm a virgin and would never do any of the things he advises (waiting for my wedding night), I lost all respect for him when he wrote that hateful screed after prop 8. I truly believe that deep down inside Dan is a racist...and that's just sad...I will however give him credit for starting the "It Get's Better Videos"...
@plutogirllovekj The fact is that African Americans in California did vote overwhelmingly to take away the rights of GLBT people. His "screed" was in anger and overstated but in the circumstances understandable. So, Dan is racist--how do you (as a Christian woman) feel about gays getting married--not civil unions but actual marriage with the name and all?
@MaryJesusJoseph I'm pro equality for all of God's children, that includes gay men and women. Even for Dan Savage...I am pro civil marriage for everyone. I have never, nor would I ever sanction the Government's classifying of some of it's citizens as intrinsically less than others...But no one who read what Dan wrote can deny that somewhere inside him is some latent racism...that is just what I believe anyway....However that doesn't nor would it ever change my commitment to equality for all.
@plutogirllovekj The way you parse your words makes me confused--why don't you just answer the question--do you support same sex marriage?
Are you sure you're not choosing to hold on to this idea that he's racist because you don't like what he says about religion? Most of us are racist or bigoted in some way but as long as he's not advocating some racist ideology I don't think you can make claims about what's in his hear.
@MaryJesusJoseph How am I parsing my words? I said that I believe in equality in civil marriage, that is the only kind of marriage the government is involved in. I actually think the equality movement needs to make sure to use "civil" in front of marriage to avoid scaring persons of faith who may be on the fence, and have the wrong impression that Gay Marriage would mean forcing their priest or pastor to marry same sex couples. I am pro-civil marriage equality!
@MaryJesusJoseph As for his anti-religious bias...I happen to read a lot of non-Christian columnists and authors, I don't accuse any of them of racism...because none of them chose to write a racist opinion piece...
@plutogirllovekj wow, somehow I missed that column about African-American voters (I just looked it up and read it.) I think that you're right, but I will continue to read him, because there are very few people who do what he does. Though I will certainly now read his words through an extra mental filter. I didn't look very hard, but I was disappointed not to find a response and recognition post by him of what was wrong with what he said then, he's usually quite good at owning up when wrong...
@HenhousetheRed the only people who consider Dan Savage controversial are the conservatives and right-wingers; to them anything you say that involves the brutally honest truth, they want to sweep under a rug because they know it's right but they don't want to own up to their own fears and narrow-mindedness.
Dan Savage is a great speaker, I envy him. And I loved the other guy on Hawaii 5-0
