Yes, this is an original Mick Jagger - Keith Richards song: they did the words and music. It came out on vinyl in 1969 on the DECCA label. Althogh the Stones are a British band, the music was published by ABKCO MUSIC, INC. in New York.

anyone remember the station hotel and Crawdaddy Richmond and all the beatnicks that used to lie on the grass down by the side of Richmond Bridge?donkey jackets, desert boots, black polo sweaters, coffee in the la burge, guess who?
lovely days back then, sometimes cold and hungry,go to Ellis wine merchants and get a couple of empty bottles get the deposit to buy a guitar string, when you think this all started there, back then, wernt we so lucky,
Tell your kid I got 21 electric guitars and can play the HELL out of this song on each one. Maybe she should be told that it's better to have an avid interest in something that keeps your heart, soul, and body alive- than sitting on the couch rotting and watching someone elses life on the tube... Or better yet, sitting around watching the assfat grow while texting someone on something that is better left hanging on the wall unanswered..
I play a little percussion and was at an outdoor festival in Wisconsin over the weekend where a rock band was playing. I went to the b-room and when I came back I hear this song playing. My friend says, "they were looking for someone to play cowbell." How's that for timing?!?
@GrampaG54 In one sense she IS right. The Rolling Stones' producer Jimmy Miller, played cowbell on the recording. Charlie Watts is playing hi-hat throughout the song. Sorry Dude.
classic song by the stones BUT in the title it's ..''Women'' ..NOT... "Woman'' .......as in plural not singular.......but thats showbiz I guess or just Ignorance
I am so sick of hearing that the Stones ripped off __________(fill in the blanks). If the Stones were so busy ripping others off, why haven't any of the others had any great songs like this? You'd think some of the others would come up with one hit song on their own. No? (The only people the Stones could be accussed of ripping off were black blues players. Even there, I would argue the Stones saved the blues and gave it a new life. Little Red Rooster to #1 on UK charts. Not bad.)
Ry Cooder rip off artists !!!!! Nothing the stones ever played prior to this had any indication they were capable of getting this funk... Keith never even tuned his guitar in anything other than a standard E tuning. Who needs talent and creativity when you can just steal it?
@devinport yeh you can see how clearly the stones owe everything to mr cooder. for every one of their 40 or so top 20 hit songs ry really wrote two number one hits. they just didn't sell that's all. i mean satisfaction sounds just like, um.... err well i can't think of the song but it does if you go and listen to ry's stuff. esp his singing. soooo much better than jagger. and man could he dance!!! and chicks!! chicks loved ry. i mean think of the models that he's married. yeh. stones suck.
@kenmfrancis So the stones suck because they had "40 or so top 20 hit songs?" and ry cooder only had one or two as you say? And you can't recall one example of them ripping off one of ry's songs? Just think about that for a sec. The Stones rock and hey so does Ry Cooder but don't come to this page to bag out another band especially one as legendary and successful as the stones, over 200 millions records sold means something. It means people love the Rolling Stones.
@connorpatmore i was being sarcastic. i'm one of those ppl who love the stones. i was taking the piss out of the idea that the stones essentially ripped of mr cooder [who im a big fan of too]. both Ry and the Stones "ripped off" everyone they liked - typically lots of blues, soul and sthn funk acts. who in themselves were often ripping off others before them. what the stones did was take those influences a million miles past what most others did. ry cooder isnt even close. great. influential->>
@connorpatmore ......influential... for sure!! but keith and mick took their writing to a whole different place. witness: 200 mill sales etc etc. Keith learns open G tuning from Ry - so what? Ry learnt that from someone. Ry didn't ever write anything as good [err popular] as Brown Sugar or Start me Up. music isn't a race anyway... they're both great artists in their own ways. Oh.. and a word of advice connor: try reading between the lines! vive le rock
@kenmfrancis I don't know if you're aware of this but you can't actually detect tone in text format unless its blatantly obvious and eloquently written so you'll have to excuse me for misinterpreting your grammatical trainwreck of a comment...
@connorpatmore "grammatical trainwreck" hehehhh. this describes just about all of the comments anywhere on the web doesnt it?? ;D
my reply starts with "I was being sarcastic". not sure i could get any clearer my fellow stones fan. lets let it go now shall we both? :: smiling & raising eyebrows hopefully::
If someone asked me which song best captures the essence of the Stones, I would say this is the one (and maybe followed by Tumbling Dice). May not be the best song, but the deliciously interlocking guitars and the irreverent style just seem to scream "Stones!" to me. Wonder whether it's just me. Anyone?
i have never been born ever but i love the rolling stones. All my unborn friends like the new modern, radio-friendly, popular computer made music but i love the old stuff. So everyone else should like me more and be my friends cause im so cool that im young but like this stuff.

i'm trying to learn this on guitar and apparently the stones play everything in between the two actual notes (in this case G and G#). I choose the beatles. jk. And I just used a tuner
@gofdebrof I'm guessing you have no idea what you're talking about. It wouldn't be between notes, that doesn't make any sense. Besides the fact that the correct musical term would be "key" (think Canon in the key of D, not Canon in the note of D). A tuner does not tell you what key a song is played in; it only tells your guitar's tuning. A tuner can't help you figure out the notes in a song because multiple instruments are playing different notes and rhythyms at the same time. Hope this helps.
@RS029 Well your guess is wrong. I was just making an observation that the song sounded like it was tuned in between the key of G and G#, and yes that is possible. It doesn't matter what key it's in if the whole guitar, bass, band is out of tune.

@Ptolomei100 I'm 52 and WAS a teenager in the 70s. I'd rather be 52 today than to be 16 again and have to listen to Gaga & Beiber anyday!!

the correct lyric is "i LAID a divorcee in New York City" if you listen to the song it makes a lot more sense. Not trying to be rude just a fyi.
