I went on the Wild Mouse Ride at the Harbour Park Littlehampton in the Summer of 1979 at the age of 7. I had never been on a ride like that before. I went on with my Dad and he sat behind me and me in the front of a two person carriage. I was very scared. But am not now. I also went on the Wild Mouse at the Harbour Park in the late 1980s and it was a more modern one had been put in to replace the old one. Has anyone got any photos or videos of the old Wild Mouse ride what was at the Littlehampt
I remember the wild mouse very well from the 1970's - two of you in one carraige, from memory not strapped in and the person at the back getting a headache from hitting your head on the back as you went down ! I remember how it laboured up to the top and when going round corners it felt like you were gonna go straight over the edge ! God I was brave in those days !!!!!
We were always too scared to go on when it was open because of the rumours at school that someone got killed on it! Half the time it was closed and rusty.
I rember going to smarts through the 80s. Loved the enterprise and the matterhorn most. The coaster on the roof did seem scary but im sure it was safe. I wish harbour park could bring some of the old type type of rides back for the older age group (10+).
If you think this coaster was good, Littlehampton had a huge wooden Big Dipper. It was built on the same site by Billy Butlin in the early 30s and dismantled in 1962. The woodie was built on top of the now demolished building that has become the main entrance. The ride was a triple figure eight and thundered around the rack. It was painted blue and had the name Butlins Park in giant red letters on the front of the dipper. I was always scared to ride it . Photos of this ride do exist on line.
Amazing how many people I've bumped into over the years who seemed to end up on a school outing here. Bet that thing wouldn't get past health and safety these days!
Despite what some people think about the place, it is a popular place to visit - and I agree I don't think it would have passed any health and safety checks today!
