  • The drummer is a bit off, but I don't blame him one bit. Shadow made some wild drum programming in this one, it's close to impossible to play it live.

  • amazing i would definitely see this show if it was on tour

  • Man this is cool! I would of taken up music in my school if they'd done tunes like this! Mr Jones you should be sacked ! Fat waste of space!

  • FUCK YES!

  • Wow that is awesome!

  • Mass Respect.. makes me want to take up xylaphone

  • great!!!!!

  • I love how the conductor is moving as well. Soul!!

  • Shame the drummer cant keep time on some bits - otherwise very good

  • this was my intro to DJ Shadow, very cool, guys.

  • hmmm...the piano seems to be in a different octive and key...maybe my ear is wrong, but isnt Building Steam With a Grain of Salt in C Minor?

  • This is also in c minor. There were some adjustments made because the piano and marimba were playing off the same part. Essentially the chords are somewhat inverted, but still c minor.

  • It might also have to do with the camera and the video compression. I'd probably have to be there to really hear it.

  • Didn't think it could be done live, but this is awesome.

  • Just wish the audio was better...

  • Very cool. If you guys plan on touring, come to texas!

  • kool

  • Absolutely superb !!!

    Very well done !!!

    x

  • drums are little off on the solo part, but its still sounds amazing

  • @mfjeff I'd be very surprised if anyone could actually replicate that solo. It's digitized together, and seems real hard to do even if you brought it down to half time. I have a lot of respect for them for trying.

  • @NGinuity its not that hard really..i can do it on drumset..not trying to brag or anything :>

  • @mfjeff Prove it :-)

  • good work, sounds great often thought about that myself

  • Que locuraaa, esta muy bien ensamblado todo. Los felicito muy buenas percusiones

  • How did you guys get sheet music for this?

  • They listened.

  • Seriously, well done to them for pulling that off. Shadow would be proud.

  • Amazing. That's all I can say.

  • Fantastic! Percussion is so powerfull, makes me get goose bumps. Great arrangement!

  • Fantastic job, nice arrangement. As has been pointed out already, the drums could use some work. The drummers from the WHS version along with this director and rest of the band would make this utterly devastating.

  • Ha, thanks man. We had alot of fun with our version (WHS) Though, I give props to this version, the timpani gives it a powerful taste, I'm sure they worked on their version as much as we did on ours (maybe longer?).

  • is your version on youtube?

  • You are pretty much a jerk. It's high school man. Do you feel better about yourself now?

  • im in highschool O.O

i guess im the only one with an ear for dirt

  • coole sjizla!

  • wow i wish my highschool band teacher would've had us playin stuff like this. i hated band and stopped after sophomore year because all the music we played was gay as hell. if my teacher had us playing dj shadow that would have been so awesome.

  • That band teacher is the pimpest i know... making his class cover DJ shadow

  • nah. He's right. marching band style means THE MUSIC, not his clothes. He does swing bits, by mistake. He slows down and speeds up, sometimes causing an extra beat. Learn about music before insulting someone who knows what they're talkin about, la.

  • Pity you couldn't get a drummer.Xylophoners are ace. what's the 3rd tuned percussion playing? You cannae hear it. Timps sound nice, bit loud like. Kewl idea, coverin DJ Shadow.

  • great job guys.

  • This was a really good project and it was excuted succcefully. The he drums and piano sounded good plus the arrangement and tempo was tight, I thought they captured the rawness of the original...well done.

  • This was a sick show. Probably the coolest and hardest thing we ever played. I definitely had to actually learn how to play with 4 mallets to get it right. I can say that Percussion Ensemble is the only thing from high school that I can say I actually miss.

  • holy shit. im in this... wow lots of people have watched this. this was the best song we've ever done for percussion ensemble. it was really hard though. so much fun though.

  • that is spectacular, great music, great show

    cruz

    south texas

  • awesomeness. old people in the audience jamin on some shadow

  • This is Youtube and this is a great adaptation. Imagine how fantastic this would sound sitting in front row! I'm sure Shadow is flattered! Talent is Talent and perfection does not exist in the "live" world!

  • This is spot on...more please!

  • great job guys!! this coming from a huge Shadow fan!!!

  • Really impressive, very interesting idea. I was actually really impressed by the drums and I didn't realise they were using 2 to do the bass and snare. 'shadow should redo the album LIVE with a proper orchestra!' that would be cool to see but I don't think its necessary seeing as from what I've seen he puts on good show anyway

  • what a cool idea, endtroducing is the shit. shadow should redo the album LIVE with a proper orchestra!

  • Im impressed that they actually tried it. always gona be hard for a drummer to replicate what was probably written on a drum machine.. dam I love this track

  • From what I've read, Endtroducing certainly was not a drum machine creation. All samples. Of course those samples were manipulated and glued together seamlessly by Shadow, but they had to be tirelessly excavated from dusty vinyl troves in the first place.

  • None of DJ Shadows beats are drum machines (or that hard).

  • that break down is no piece of cake...

  • the drum part was broken into two parts. one for snare and cymbals. the other for bass drum. it made it a bit easier.

  • the conductor is a good example of how white people dance to hip hop music. great job though, i thought it was fucking awesome, especially the first two songs, all these criticizing bitches dont realize a drum machine, sampler, and tables create way faster drum lines then a human ever could. its obviously gonna sound a lot different than the album when it comes to drum breaks and syth sounds.

  • wtf? takes the song and adds an extra beat on the drum solos and plays it marching band style and then plays it like a swinging frank sinatra tune? no. the song is not that hard to play in the first place. please listen to your version and compare it to the original first before butchering it. no. no. no.(hangs head, cries in the corner)

  • Wow, that was amazing, I love it! I give props to that cool music teacher for allowing the kids to do that. I wish i did something like this in school. You got to change it up for the kids now-a-days because music is getting much more interesting than classical music. Awesome!!

  • Kinda awesome for a buncha high school kids!

Especially for how intricate the percussion gets in this song (Intense drum syncopation @ around 1:30 which was performed as well as any human drummer could wish to attempt!) and they pulled the whole damn complicated thing off pretty damn sweetly!!! Good Stuff!!!

  • I know one thing..i cant do it..so more for them for getting to where they are on it..I wonder if shadow himself has seen this...Its props no doubt to know your stuff is worth trying. and this song is Vish off the break.

  • Wow, this is pretty amazing. When I saw 'high school percussion ensemble' I wasn't expecting much.

Really great job on the part around 1:45.

  • good idea, poor execution

  • I dont care! Its beautiful!

  • whu? Damn it's bad, i love shadow, love this song, great idea. But damn they can't play!? the drummer sucks!

  • i bet the public get no shit

  • I'm speechless

  • wow! gave me goosebumps!

  • damn dude.... wish my hs band was like this

  • this is sick!

  • fuck yes this is sick!!!

  • good taste for a high school director

  • neato cheato.

    RJD2 song next?

  • that shit was off the hook!

  • Not bad, but it's never reach the original!!!! It's a sampel from the Dj shadow album "Entroducing" the first part is called "Building Stream with a gain of salt" from the year 1996. The other part is "transmission 1".

  • they did an unbelievable job. brilliant. drums were slightly off at times but started off well. remember (it looks like) it's 2 school kids- 1 playing a timpani as a kick drum and another on a snare. also they're playing the break down pattern that's virtually impossible to play by a human anyway (unless you're bonham)- it's just sample shuffles!! i wish i had a music teacher with this much vision when i was at school! amazing.

  • The video's introduction says: "The Minnetonka High School Percussion Ensemble."

  • Bonham made drums sound gorgeous, but he was by no means a technical wizard

  • yeah i like it.. drummer suks..but still great quality and he got the drum set to sound as ghetto as shadows

  • this is sick.. regardless of the drummer's errors it's an interesting interpretation.. gets an A+ for creativity and effort.. awesome.. i was bobbing my head the whole way thru...

  • the vibraphone saves the day!

  • You've got give em respect for doin this.. It sounds pretty good to me. I'd be buzzing if a band like this played this tune or any DJ Shadow live and I wasn't expecting it.

  • that was dope.. but the drums were so off in the beginning.

  • i guess those folks they have written about the untight drums are never have seen a drum st in front of theirself..you suckaz. i think it's intersting to see & listen to this version. big respect for this--

  • no way, minnetonka minnesota??

  • i don't see the point though. Shadow tracks always have such amazing live sounding drums anyway, why bother getting someone in who can't do it half as well?

  • You don't know what you are talking about.

  • are you talking to me?

  • I would buy it on CD

  • Wow! Amazing! But I don't recognize the song. What album is it from?

  • It's Endtroducing from first Dj Shadow album...

  • The drums definitely need to be tighter, they were really sloppy during the first break, not sure if its just the bass drum, or just the snare, or both, but they are definitely off. The rest seemed to have it really tight though, and i did enjoy it

  • fucking amazing..... shadow fan for life... u guys kicked that shit

  • Fantastic job. A lot of work had to go into this and props for doing it. Its so easy to just put on any random music but to challenge your students to play Shadow is awesome. Very well done to all involved.

  • this is very impressive. dj shadow sure is an inspiration to many and this is a good example of what can be achieved. thumbs up guys, good work.

  • k, now do dj krush - stormy cloud

  • building steam with a grain of salt is 4real

  • Man this is Awesome, they must have spent sooo much time working on this to make it work.Nice one

  • This is beautiful... full credit to you all. I havent been moved by DJ Shadow's work like this since i was lucky enough to be a part of a few thousand stunned and awe shocked crowd at a Show held here at The Forum in Melbourne. Please keep me posted on your future works.... please dont stop this..

    a_man_exists@hotmail.com

  • they used more then 1 person for the drums that didnt work really

but other then that its pretty nice :D

  • this is pretty tight, but that drummers gotta work on that break in the first song like whoa

  • damn thanks for that!

  • Oh my goodness. I am one of Shadow's biggest fans... Whoever assembeled, arranged and brought this to fruition is a minor God. YOU GUYS KICK MY ASS ALL OVER! I hope that Josh Davis knows about this. This needs to be performed again with better recording. You are all wonderful!

  • Holy God. Genius.
