Practice is good, and no shame in failing the first time. Some pointers; Scape off some of the outer bark as you did, but on a smaller piece of bark. Scrape off some magnesium on those shavings. Then a good spark shower over it. Once you got the first flames, take that bark, and hold it upwards so that the flames lick on the bark, spreading the fire on the strip. Once it burns well, insert it into the stack of small branches etc that will be the first start of your new fire. And keep pracitce.
hold the knife at a 90 degree angle to the ferro rod, and it is best to not use the blade because it dulls it. if you hold it at a 90 degree angle youll throw off sparks like nobody's business.
also you try try shave the ferrosium rod, try scrapingit so your blade is the other way,facing you, on the packet, the scraping was for the magnesium bock that the ferrosium rod is attached to, the idea is you scrape the magnesium and then light that,it is used to aid the lightinf of tinder or f you can get enough of it replace tinder,i would use it just to aid though,takes ages to scape off enuf to replace it.pull the rod away from the knife,this way your tinder doesnt move when you strike.

you should peel some of it thinner. the thinner the better, it will light faster. i know it will burn faster also, so dont bitch about it.

you strike the flint really wrong! you need to scrap it with the back of your knife so the flint will not be rugged or damage. hope it helps...

Funny vid :-) Use the back of your knife with flint. This way you won't dull your knife.
