Wow...your right hand is amazing on this tune. The subtle bouncing back and forth from the main melody to the backing rhythm is incredible. Sounds like two banjos at once. You are my favorite banjo player I believe. Keep it up!
@complexrhythm Thanks for the comments. That's fine, ask away! No up-picking here. The DVD doesn't do more than mention that it's done as it's something I only do a bit of. Check out these videos for some though:
(Argh, youtube won't even let me post links to other youtube videos here! I'll email them to you.)
Hey. I'm going to Nääsville Festival as well. I hope to see you there. We are a small handfull fo Danish oldtimeres. It could be fun to have a jam. :-). I have never been there before. Looks like there is going to be a lot of bluegrass there but I hope to find some oldtimeres ;-).
Yess i agree. I was at "sore fingers" this spring nad the oldtimers were outnumbered by bluegrassers by far, but we sure had som GREAT ot-jams :-). You know of more ot-people who are coming? so far we are 4 to 5 people from denmark ( 2 fiddle, 2 banjo 1 guitar and maybe ( please please ! ) 1 doublebass.
You make it look so efortless and easy! I wish I had the same skills as you have! I just love how you put in these rolls and brushes here and there. Keep on picking! (Or hammering should say heeh)
Thanks a lot. Fretless banjos have become fairly common in the last 5-10 years (after a long dormancy). I see you're on the Isle of Man? You can probably find an old fretless (from the late 1800s) in the UK. Otherwise most of the modern smaller custom makers make some, just off the top of my head: Bob Flesher, Greg Galbraith, Jeff Menzies and Jason Romero. Lots of others. I even saw the Deering Goodtime is available fretless! Check out the Eagle Music Shop in the UK for them.
Hey Hunter. Wanted to tell you that I often listen to this one. I love the drive. It makes me in a good mood every time.
I have made some videos myself during these last few weeks. The band ain't playing for the time being, so i had to figure out something else to do. Take a look and a listen if you like.
Your friend Jesper from Denmark and Big Hungry Joe.
I've just started playing the banjo and luckily found Hunter. Very inspirational.

Sorry I have so many questions. Are you up picking in this video? If so. Does your DVD say how to incorporate up picking with clawhammer?

Interesting neck, did you have it made like that?
Labrabob 1 year ago
It's an old cheap banjo that I got for a hundred dollars. Pulled out the frets up to the 7th and glued a piece of sheet copper over that area.
HunterRobertson 1 year ago
Good idea.... I may try it. What kind of glue?
Labrabob 1 year ago
I used a spray contact cement, I think epoxy would work well too. There's a little write-up on it here:

Great playing. Are you up-picking with your index finger as well as playing down strokes?
spinzorelli 2 years ago
Thanks. No, just down strokes - the index is just flopping around.

Hunter
