@Fallofthegamer Hi, thanks for asking. First of all, whatever you do, do not put your dog down however badly behaved it is, there is always a solution other than that.. What were you doing with Smudge the last two times you were bitten? Are there any common things which Smudge does prior to the biting? I will respond asap. :-)
@alicepink417 Hiya. When you get bitten, try out your acting skills. Pretend to be really in pain (lay on the floor clutching your arm whimpering (for example) and see if you can make your dog feel sorry enough to lick your arm where they bit you. Eventually you just have to whimper for a second and they switch from biting to licking immediately.
@gamingfish24 Yeah my boy is 10 now but I can still get him in the mood for a fight if I hide around the corner from he's sitting and quickly reach my 'claw' around the corner scratching at the wall a few times then pull it it back just before he gets it. Then he leans up against the wall just out of sight waiting for the next chance to have a go. He also goes mad when I say Cat! Comes flying out the door pretending he's tough with his little bark. haha.
i got a almost one year old yorkie dog she acts the same way she acts so though its hilarious sometimes i really think she think she is some kind of monster cause she really expect u to be scared of her sometimes i play along and run away from her and she really enjoys that lovely
@Nunubaybee89 Haha, sounds like you know exactly how to play the game. a few years after this video I left my boy with my Mum for 6 months while overseas and was informed when I got back that he had attacked one of her neighbours farm dogs (said he was hanging off the fur of his chest if I remember right) So I think I may have been a bit TOO soft on him. I haven't seen him bite anything other than food since then so he must have been missing me and took it out on a rather bemused dog :-)
That is SO my dog! She's six months old right now, and she's a miniature schnauzer, but her ears are always up like a bunnie's! And she growls like that, jumps like that, and barks the same way as your dog's! :)
@FoxRain97 Sounds like she has that special spark to develop a great personality. Lucky you! :-) As long as you give her loads of attention and don't treat her too much like a dog, she'l never realise she is one like mine. They tend to lose a bit of that character if they spend more time with other dog's than people. All the best.
Adorable! Rexie is a mutation and my idea of the liger of the morkie world. He is quite hefty at 9.6 lbs and incredibly ferocious according to the at home vet when he was a pup. He even growled and barked at me when we first got him when I got up at night to make a cup of tea. He is too cute for words so that helps his unpalatable persona. He is affectionate with us and is mellowing as he is now a year old. Your pup is sooo cute.
@PKStefanini Thankyou :-) My yorkie likes to hunt mice, but he never wants to catch them. I think he would be a photographer rather than a hunter if he was human. hehe.
He is sooo cute and a little toughie. Yorkies are very tough little dogs! They were bred and trained originally to hunt and kill rats and other rodents!!
We have a precious Morkie that looks just like a Yorkie and is very tough. I keep warning my husband to keep his daybed fenced off as if Rexie gets up there he could be seriously injured if he jumps down. This is common sadly for Yorkies...and Morkies.
@PKStefanini Hi :-) The Human bed thing is a life long concern, I've heard 2 thumps in the night in 9 years, Twice He has rolled off the side of my bed a meter drop onto carpet. Both times he was apparently asleep so he was relaxed, and being fat, (top heavy) landed tummy side up completely unharmed! Now he sleeps on the floor in a wonderful little canvas dog house which he loves. He runs into it at "bed time!" and makes me pick it up with him inside to be flown to the bedroom. :-).
@RamirezNZ Thanks for this great reply. I will try to have Rexie learn to enjoy his beds at night. My husband has tried tethering him with a short chew proof leash and harness to keep him from jumping off when they are napping and Rexie seems to enjoy it. Other than that he would jump off head first and surely injure himself.

Yes our walks have turned into wlks, but my lad is 9 and still runs flatout for his breakfast first thing in the morning. he's more inclined to sit around on the couch unless there are visitors, then he's off to find something he can eat while as evenly positioned between everyone as possible.. :-)
Thankyou :) 9 is still young & he's small, he'll be around for a while yet . I do chatter to dogs a lot, people call me the 'Lady who talks to dogs!!) ha ha. All the best to you & Benny :)
@bluebird3042 Aw! They're so misunderstood. hehe! Thanks for your comments on Benny's behalf, I dont need to see yours to know how cute he/she is. :-)
@RamirezNZ Thankyou :) Mine was a little boy but he passed away last year. I get so much pleasure from watching clips like yours & other little Yorkies. It brings back some lovely memories for me :) Good job on the tips too, you sound like a very dedicated owner. Hugs & kisses to tough little Benny XOX
@bluebird3042 I watched you vid, I felt like I was watching a vid of my own boy (who's 9 now) I felt a bit sad really! I talk to him all the time like you, and you can always tell by the head switching from side to side which words they're interested in. Such sweet natured little dogs. All the best!
@Lol90796 Haha, yeah I saw that the other day and was wondering who would do that. I have actually noticed on rare occasions someone who hasn't met him will walk in with their arms crossed looking rather uncomfortable when he runs around their feet. What phobia is that? Hehe!
Common Conditions 1 - Luxating Patella's About age 5 I noticed my Yorkie lifting his back leg a bit on walks. Yorkies often develop this on one or both hind legs. There are grooves running down the middle of the kneecaps on the hind legs which hold a tendon in place, if this groove is shallow it can eventually allow the tendon to slip off and on as they walk. A vet can either deepen the groove or pin the tendon in place (preferable deepen) so get the vet to keep an eye on this to be safe.
Groomin tips 2 - If you groom your Yorkie yourself make sure you keep an eye on the arm pits (and legs) as the fine fur tends to knot easily. Try to use electric clippers. If you use scissors make sure you have all limbs and dog in a vice like grip (they are really strong) and hate being on their backs. I clipped a 2-3 mm hole under his arm once, it healed quickly by itself and he seemed not to notice and only concerned by my reaction, but the guilt! ooooh the guilt!....
Grooming Tip- Make sure you find some scissors or clippers which you can use to safely trim the hair between their paw pads regularly along with their nails.
- Avoid getting water in their ears when you bath them or they can get infections and/or hearing loss over time.
- Keep the hair on and below the backside short! They wouldn't survive in the wild because they wouldn't be able to poo after a few weeks. The implications on not trimming are not pleasant for dog or owner.
Tip- Watch your yorkie's face closely and you can become a master of reading their facial expressions. They will always be running up to you for attention and being able to detect the subtle hint of desperation in their eyes could be the difference between having to clean up a number two off the carpet or not. to make sure, just get in the habit of asking them. I say "outside to the toilet?" he knows 'outside' and 'toilet' and will run to the door, this works really well after a while.
I've learned a lot having having my Yorkie with me most of the time over the years so I'm going to start adding useful tips to other Yorkie owners as I think of them.
-Don't let their cuteness prevent you from growling them, but use it sparingly as it loses its effectiveness NEVER growl out of context to the behaiviour, eventually just the thought of repeating the behaiviour will invoke the memory of past growling/s. "Bed!" Give them a place to think alone for a few minutes, then some love.
@shakedownstreet48 Hehe! Yeah it's definately a Yorkie trait. A few tips for anyone with a Yorkie Pup that may be useful.... 1) Don't let them anywhere near steps for the first 12 Months, bones WILL break.
2) If you find something chewed, take them to it, hold it in front of them and tell them off (they will relate the fright to the object) then give them a few minutes alone before giving them a cuddle. 3) If they bite you too hard, pretend it hurts and they get concerned and lick it better.
@shakedownstreet48 . They will easily able to hold their 1's and 2's for 8 hours by adulthood if you get them used to going outside first thing in the morning, But my Mum has a yorkie too and neither of us managed to get them to go toilet in the same place twice inside, so watch your step and let them out for a few minutes as often as poss so their instincts kick in. Praise them outside - Point their nose at it (not in it) inside and say NO wees inside! and take them outside for a minute.
@shakedownstreet48 Your pup is a real cutie! thanks for the link. Mine is a miniature yorkie so he weighs all of 10 pounds (4.5 kg) aged 9 years. I dont think anyone has thought he wasn't a puppy except other mini yorkie owners, and I never tire of people's amazement upon learning his age when we go for walks. My little Peter Pan. :-)
I have a video of my cousin's new yorkie, sugar, and i admit she acts like this ALL the time! They really think they're great danes! they have huge heads, and they are very arrogant and haughty:) a lot for a teeny puppy! she chases me around, and growls, bullying my ankles :)
Yorkies are extremely sensitive to your actions so all it took to start him off was to suddenly turn toward him and open my eyes wide. Then he would run to the hall knowing it was time for a stand off. I get down on my knees as if I'm about to pounce, make a claw with my hands and act like a dog basically. No touching required unless he felt he was on top in the battle (or wanted a reassuring pat!). He tends to dart past the claws for a cuddle these days but we still have fun!
