  • another thing, they do not last 10 times as long in real use, only in theory do they last 5X as long. assuming you dont turn them on and off often, keep them in an open space (not enclosed in a fixture where heat builds up) and get the more expensive quality type.

  • you should mention the poor quality light output from florescent, low CRI, and often too high color temps, and no, the "warm" or "soft" white bulbs tend to have a pink hue to them, mercury intoxication, and LESS light output than their incandescent equivalent, and most are not dimmable.

  • I also learned from Consumer reports that 40 watt bulbs will be banned in 2014! I better stock up on those too!

  • @noreaga Either you have some sort of mental disorder or you're a paid troll. When presented with facts you can't depute all you do is insult people and resort to straw-man arguments. You have yet to present one verifiable fact to back up your opinions. At least I presented facts people can research and prove to themselves.

Fact: the claim that CFL's cause health problems as a result of "Dirty Electricity" has been thoroughly debunked and the person responsible for the claim exposed as a quack

  • @Blaze1024 lol 1st off, where in my previous post did i insult u? I'm sorry for hurting your utube feelings. I'l try to go easy on u next time. the FACTS u presented are simply false. again, i said MOST (not all) but MOST cfls dont last any longer than incandescents.i already presented to u "FACTS". i've used them b4 and didnt last me a year and i know ppl living in buildings where its ALL cfls and every other week or so, they burn out. I think ur upset cuz most ppl wont use ugly swigly bulbs

  • @Blaze1024 please post more so i can watch u go crazy :D

  • The claims that CFL's are worse for the environment because they contain trace amounts of Mercury is a bunch of unadulterated hogwash. The fact is incandescent bulbs even though they don't contain mercury themselves still have a much larger mercury foot print. The reason for this is that power plants release mercury when they burn fuel and since incandescent bulbs use more energy more mercury is released into the atmosphere as the result of there higher energy consumption.

  • @Blaze1024 Mayb i'l put a few t-spoons of mercury in ur coffee and we'l see if u have the same attitude

  • @noreaga12326 That's quite the nasty attitude. What's wrong don't like when the facts don't back up your delusions..

Fact. The amount of Mercury in a CFL is about 4mg

The Mercury foot print of a 100 watt incandescent bulb is about 160mg

Compared to CFL's Incandescent bulbs are responsible for substantially more mercury being released into our atmosphere. The amount of mercury released from power plants just to power Incandescent bulbs in US homes is about 600 metric tons a year.

  • @Blaze1024 the FACT is... you greenies want the world to live being paranoid. Next you're gona wana ban trains and buses cuz they "pollute" the air. Or how about telling a women that they should ban hairspray cuz of all the toxic stuff thats in there. Incandescents have been around for over 100 years and the earth is still standing. So quit whining. I'm just glad that MOST americans are not falling for these silly green scams that u tree huggers are trying to force on us. Get lost now.. lib-tard

  • @noreaga12326 Typical knuckdragger mentality, when your lies are dispelled by facts you resort to personal attacks and straw-man arguments. For me adopting CFL's and LCD monitors had nothing to do with being a "Greenie" It's all about adopting superior modern technology and saving money. I'm sure there were cavemen just like you who called other cavemen liberals for using fire to cook their food and light their cave's so enjoy your 100 year old inefficient expensive technology.

  • @Blaze1024 u said something about "adopting to SUPERIOR technology. Thats your opinion. Just because the technology is modern, doesnt mean its good. I've heard about all these EFFICIENT AND MODERN" products and how they dont work like they're suppose to. Who gives a sh*t how modern and efficient they are. If they dont work like they're suppose to, it defeats the purpose. dont worry about what im using in my house. Its my home and if i choose to leave my lights on 24/7, then thats what i'l do

  • @noreaga12326 "I've heard about all these EFFICIENT AND MODERN" products and how they dont work like they're suppose to"

Funny how the only people you hear making these claims are the people who support the competing technology. My personal experience has substantiates the superiority of the new technology. Not only do they last much longer, since I've switched to CFL's and LCD's my electric bill has been substantially reduced and my air-conditioning doesn't run nearly as much.

  • @Blaze1024 its not claims dude. there are FACTS. As far as the other efficient products such as washing machines, dishwashers etc etc, i'm only going by what i've heard. As far as CFLs, i have used several and none of them lasted a year. i guess there are exceptions. Just like when idiot greenies CLAIM that incandescents dont last. Well i have incandescents that hasnt burned out in 2 years. Whats even more funny about this video is that they claim cfls will help stop global warming. Hilarious!

  • @Blaze1024 Please dont tell me that you think cfls will help stop global warming cuz if so, u'l really have me laughing harder here

  • My cfls never lasted nearly as long as my incandescents. my incandescents last years but my cfls last months. I usually have my lights of and only switch my lights on for short periods of time.

  • @PFCVoshell Your comment is obviously bullshit. With the way CFL's work the only way they wouldn't last as long is if you break them

  • @RyanPerson That person's comments isnt bullshit because there are MANY cfls that dont last as long as you're told. you and your greenie friends are suckered into this "green" scam. cfls are pure shit

  • @noreaga12326 Lol green? CFL's have mercury in them, meaning they are worse for the environment than incandescents, so what does going green have to do with anything? CFLs use a small amount of electricity to light a gas in a tube, which is much more efficient than heating a resistive wire (it takes a lot of electricity to create heat). 9 times out of 10, the fluorescent tube lasts longer than the wire in an incandescent. Don't get suckered into this "everything is a scam" scam

  • @RyanPerson Maybe u need to read what i posted. I never said that i liked cfls or that they were green. something we can agree on, cfls do have mercury in them. Thats one reason i dont use cfls either and i have nothing against the old skool flourecents such as the tubes and the circular versions. But a cfl bulb DOES NOT last any longer than an incandecent. I've used cfls b4 and none of them made it to a year. So you're not saving sh*t by using a cfl bulb.

  • @noreaga12326 Lol yep pretty much the normal youtube dumbass response is "you didn't read my comment correctly". If you cant argue with someone, don't bother trying. I was referring to how you called me a "greenie" for saying the cfls last longer. Try to remember what you type. And, like I just said cfls use less than half the electricity that incandescents use. CFLs dont last a year, but neither do the other ones. LED's are the way to go anyways once they become cheaper

  • @RyanPerson awww looks like i got u mad now huh? My incandescent bulbs have actually lasted me 2 and a half years without burning out. For u to say that CFLs last longer makes u a moron. most ppl know that MOST cfls dont last any longer than incandescents (IN GENERAL) Please post more so i can watch u go crazy

  • @noreaga12326 Well you seem to be the one insulting more...and you haven't put up a single valid argument, except by making unbased claims about how they last longer. Ive had cfls last longer than that personally (the ones that first came out) that still havent gone bad. It's becoming clear that you're probably trolling and probably never have even used a cfl, so yeah, you got me...

  • @RyanPerson i've used cfls b4, thats why i can say that many of them dont last any longer than regular bulbs. I think that it just angers YOU that ppl like me just dont wana use those ugly swirly bulbs. im sorry for "calling you names" next time i'l try to go easy on your utube feelings... mr. sensitive

  • I'm an electrical engineer. WHY do I even want to switch to CFLs? So I can save a measly 1-2 pennies each month? That seems pointless

    .

Besides I'll burn up several dollars (and emits lots of CO2) having to drive the CFLs to the landfill after they die. That's doesn't seem very "green" to me

    .

  • @electrictroy2010 just do what i do, put the old cfls in with the plastic recyler bin, let them who earn money on our waste get rid of the cfls!

  • @electrictroy2010 when i switched to cfls i noticed a drop in how much electricity was being used, on a global scale thats brill for the environment.

  • LED FTW

  • i hate the cfl bulbs..i had to add a lamp to my room because the lights are to deem.... how is that saving me money..and they dont last that long,,ive had 3 fail.in a year......not cheapo off brands either,,

  • 1.) Light is heat

2.) The edison bulb is a LIGHT BULB, where as the CFL is a mercury-powered chemical laden piece of shit with a CAPACITOR and all kinds of junk.

3.) Every SINGLE person who isn't a robotic liberal knows they DO NOT last longer, but WAY WAY less time. Incandescent, some have been known to last DECADES.

4.) Even if we all go CFL, the electric-powered monster gas-free cars you fucktards will defend next with easily increase "greenhouse gases" by umpteen times Incandescent.

  • Your a tree hugging fag go fuck a spotted owl asshole!!!

  • That's why my house uses halogen bulbs; the best of both worlds!

  • CFLs are superior to LEDs and Incand. bulbs, they are more affordable and save energy. The light quality is better. Support CFLs today!

  • @stickedU hahahahhahaha thats a complete joke... Your CFLs are gona be off the market very soon. Give about 10 or 15 more years. i want u to post to me some more so i can keep laughing at u. u've made my week

  • LED lights is the future, look it up

  • @hunken2 LEDs are not the only lights of the future. its ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING. many ppl dont seem to get that incandescents are not going to be phased out, at least not 100%. Incandescents such as Halogens are already in the market. They're as much as 70% efficient and they're still putting more efficiency into them. Not sure about other countries but here in the US, not all states are banning them. For example, here in NY, they ONLY require government buildings to have flourecents.

  • @hunken2 (CONTINUED) I've seen LEDs and in my opinion, they're not suitable for house lighting. They're more suitable for parking lots or parking garages. Not house lighting.

  • I installed traffic signal grade incandescent bulbs around my home in 1992, and have not replaced one yet. For bathrooms, kitchen stove, hall lights and others that get turned on and off, they last longer and take less energy. No toxic chemicals either.

  • Every light in my house is on a dimmer and I turn lights off when I leave the room. Many people have money problems but I doubt anyone ever looked at their light bulbs back in the day and cursed them. The savings are generally meaningless to the average person. As for in indistinguishable light quality; thats simply not true. The cfl's dont cover the same light spectrum, they give many people headaches, (myself included), and they make your home look like a hospital waiting room.

  • were not going to have a choice in a few months FUCK THE EPA!!!!!!!!

  • A cfl has only 1/8 of the visible light spectrum, "RED. GREEN. and BLUE". compared of an ordinary tungsten bulb."ALL COLORS" If you are just a little colorblind (like i am) you just see green and grayish colors, (in my case). Examble my food looks like s..t. sorry for this anti cfl comment. i only have incandescent light bulbs; hundreds of them, just to ensure i have good light years to come.

  • CFL's still get hot as fuck !

  • @67tr876 Yeah. For one, feel the base, TADA, don't burn your hand, careful! Now how are CFLs better anyone? Anyone? No, not tree-hugging liberals / hippies, I mean valid reasons. None? Oh. Now why the fuck are they being OUTLAWED?

  • CFLs do not produce as much useful light as the makers claim nor do they last as long. CFLs may glow for 1000s of hours but but they steadily loose luminance ie they fade out. I usually bin CFLs after about 18 to 24 months use. CFLs are ok but are no where near as good as claimed. And then there is the problem of disposal......

  • @riottaba I"m glad that you're one of the many of millions of people whos talking smarts. These greenies try so hard to shove these shitty cfl bulbs down our throats just to make money. i've try using a few of them many years ago and they don't last as long, they take a long time go get to full brightness and their lighting quality is gloomy and horrible. Its amazing that these eco morons would rather have their homes look depressing and gloomy cuz they actually believe cfls will save the planet

  • Why do many people screw in CFLs by holding the glass? The CFL's box specifically shows this must not be done. Hold it by the base. Maybe that's why so many people complain about broken bulbs... I've been using warm white CFLs for over a decade. A few cheap ones lasted a number of months, but most last years with several hours of usage per day. The savings in electricity cost are very large, especially as CFLs and halogens now cost almost the same price.

  • @Cluster00000 I pay 7 cents/kwh in bc. That means I can run a 1,000 watts of light for one hour, for 7 cents. I can keep 16, 60 watt bulbs on for 7 cents an hour. I don't even have that many bulbs in my house, let alone leave them all all day. Just how big is your damn house for these big savings you're talking about? Do you live underground or own a factory or something?

  • @papatire Where I live electricity is priced at 17 Canadian cents per kilowatt. 'Large' savings are relative. I consider "large" to be saving far more than the cost of the light bulb per year. Since CFLs tend to last for many years of regular usage, they more than pay for themselves. CFLs have superior operating costs to incandescents and halogens, and when quality CFLs are purchased the light is indistinguishable in quality to ordinary low tech light bulbs.

  • @Cluster00000 I said this b4 and i'l say it again, if cfls were that superior, congress would let consumers make up their own minds whether they want them or not. if u think cfls look nice, you're entitled to your opinion. in my opinion, CFLs give off ugly harsh lighting. i refuse to turn my house looking like the inside of a gas station or parking garage because of a moronic myth that cfls will save the planet. you and ur eco friendly family need to check urselves into a mental hospital

  • @noreaga12326 "you and ur eco friendly family need to check urselves into a mental hospital" Nothing like reasonable and rational debate without ad hominem attacks, is there? You're buying the wrong kind of CFL. People keep talking about the harsh office/gas station light without realising CFLs come in two varieties. I don't buy the stark white lights either. Congress is legislating on CFLs as many people are poor at maths and don't want to pay $2 more now to save $10 later on electricity.

  • @Cluster00000 i think that it should be up to the consumer on what they wana buy and how much they're willing to pay. I've also seen cfls where they've tried to make them into the same color as the incandescents but u can still see the difference. cfls are still ugly, no matter how much they try to improve on them. And their swirly appearance is also quite ugly. what can i say, i like my good old edison bulbs. until congress starts paying my light bill, i'l decide what bulbs best suits me.

  • Incandescent bulb:60 watt 4 pack for $5.00 they last 3 years.I got some and they have not burned out yet and it has been 4 years.

CFL bulb:15 watt 1 pack for $3.99.They last "15" years, but i got some and they lasted 2 months. CFL's FAIL.I also have a few bulbs that are in my house that are from1988 and they still work.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, those eco freaks think by using CFL's, they are helping fight global warming! When in fact light bulbs have nothing to do with it! I get sick of all this "green" crap! It is also proven the research on global warming is very badly flawed, but you won't hear that from the media! Climate has been changing for millions of years. Basically, that is like saying Neanderthal man is responsible for the melting of the ice age!

  • Two years ago, I bought a curly 100 watt bulb for the kitchen and it was like a 40 watt bulb! Way too dim! I threw it away and replaced it with the good old fashion incandesant light bulb! When the liberals in California tried to ban them, I began stocking up two years ago. I have enough now to last at least 10 years, and continue to stock up.

  • @newalm You are wasting your money. Modern fluorescent bulbs are far more efficient and you get more light for the same power consumption using them. My house here in California came with them and I save lots of money, they last longer and the light emitted from them is a higher color temperature making me feel more awake and fresh (cool white type).

  • @ThinkingBetter in my opinion, incandescent bulbs give off MUCH BETTER quality light than cfls. if cfls were that superior, consumers would buy them with out government having to FORCE them down our throats. Government wants to ban edisons cuz they know that most ppl hate cfls. If u bought cfls because u cant afford to pay a higher light bill, thats one thing. But for anybody to buy CFLs for a stupid myth about saving global warming is nonsense. only a religious nut job would believe that.

  • @noreaga12326 I prefer the higher color temperature of CFL.

  • @ThinkingBetter if thats what floats ur boat then enjoy ur cfls

  • @noreaga12326 You need to do what I did...stock up big time on incandescent light bulbs! I started two years ago, slowly buying up light bulbs. I think I have enough to last 10 years so far. I tried one of those CFL bulbs and they are dimmer then the standard incandescent bulb. I tried a 100 watt and it was like a 40 watt bulb in brightness! Right then I realized I better start stocking up on the incandscent light bulbs!

  • @newalm you have wonderful taste my friend. incandescent lights give off FAR BETTER light quality than cfl.many ppl say that some cfls and even leds have the same light quality that incandescents have. thats bull shit. they've been trying very hard to improve them but no matter how hard they try, compact flourecents will never have the same, nor the nice light quality that edison bulbs have. all these moron greenies are a bunch of retards thinking that incandescents are influencing climate change

  • @noreaga12326 Light is quite well understood and the difference between CFL and traditional light bulbs is about the frequency spectrum of the light emitted and the way the light might be flickering. Modern CFLs refresh themselves so rapidly (>10.000 times per second) that flickering is a non-issue. If you use a modern CFL with a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin the spectrum will be similar to a traditional light bulb and more pleasant. Surely it will use much less energy, less than one third.

  • @ThinkingBetter thank you for your suggestion but i am sticking with my traditional light bulb. i have seen many cfls and not one of them have the same pleasent light quality that incandescents have. They've tried to make them the same color temperature but theres is clearly a difference. not only does the light quality from cfls suck but their swirly appearence is also real ugly. Halogen bulbs are appearing (energy efficient incandescents) once they come out, i'l save energy by using Halogens

  • @ThinkingBetter You are wrong, I tried a CFL and it is not brighter than the standard light bulb! I tried a 100 watt CFL bulb in the kitchen and it had about the same brightness as a 40 watt bulb! I also hear of complaints of these bulbs not being bright enough that it causes eye strain and head aches. I don't feel I wasted any money, quite the opposite! I will have good lighting for at least 10 to 15 years with the standard light bulbs!

  • @newalm The brightness of light is a measurable metric. You can judge the efficiency of a light bulb on how hot it gets. Light bulbs (any type) emit two types of radiation: Visible light and heat. The hotter it is the less efficient it is. With the same energy you get more brightness from CFL because less energy is lost in heat. It's not an issue for any argument. The spectrum of light emitted is a different story and if you prefer the light from standard light bulbs, go for it :-)

  • '

a normal light bulb can use a dimmer control from 0 to 100,,,

a twister light bulb CANNOT use a dimmer control and not work

  • That is a complete lie! THE CURLY BULBS DO NOT PRODUCE THE SAME AMOUNT OF LIGHT! TEST THEM YOURSELF AND SEE!

  • Well, after two years, I stocked up on enough incandescent light bulbs to last me 20 years! None of those of those curly twisty mercury infested light bulbs that bathe the world in a gauzy, dim, dirty, yellow haze will not light up my house!

  • Also, many CLFs are supposed to last up to 10 years. Most of them don't! even if you purchased a good brand! I find the "Great Value" CFL's from Walmart work the best and longest and output a "incandescent toned light". I actually have lamps with incandescent bulbs that have not been replaced for over 6 years, I use the lamps every day! I think I should have a choice on what bulb I want to use, not have the government choose for me by banning the sale of the incandescent bulbs in America.

  • I do not like those CFLs, I have many fixtures in our house that you can clearly see the bulb like workshop lights, bathroom lights and more. When you used to get a 4 pack of incandescent bulbs for under a dollar, you can now get a 4 pack of CFLs for around $5+ (if you want good ones). You cant actually think that everyone will pay to get rid of those fluorescent bulbs. People will just throw them in a black bag or smash them up and throw them in the trash. Some places do take them for free.

  • I am not very happy about CFL because three times CFL already burn out and smoke into air. Mecury vapor air that make my left eye become blind for 45 second and restore my left eye to see again for first time. I hate CFL because of mercury and HIGH EMF! I bough LED light without Mercury and some other low 25 or 60 watt incadescend light bulbs. CFL is very dangerous because fire and smoke mecury vapor into air. BAN lousy CFL!

  • EnergyStar has a guide on how to clean these up on their website.

I see no difference in the color of CFLs as they can have different color phosphor put in them to make almost a complete spectrum of colors.

I use CFLs in my room, and I have NO incandescent at all. Some of the other rooms in my house have a few incandescent in ceiling fans because they look nicer in the fans than CFL.

  • Pure Spectrum has now patented a CFL build that is fully dimmable(no flicker or dying out), instant on, cold to the touch, highest power factor(.96), and the energy usage is proportional to the dimming level, the light output is that of an incandescent and the price will be in the $4-$6 range. This is the answer to the NEW CFL!

Hopefully the bulbs will be on Home Depot and Wal Mart shelves soon.

  • If you use fluorescent lighting either bulb or tube they need to be replaced once they show dark shadows or blackening inside them as they will produce harmful radiation when they get old with prolonged use

  • What's the difference?

Well I think the Thomas Edison bulb wont cause sterility

  • Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb!

  • Funny because it's... somewhat true.

The modern bulb we know isn't his design.

  • CFL's are now cheaper than incandescent bulbs. I can get a pack of 5 for 25p. But a single incandescent bulb for about £2.

  • Mercury poisoning, skin cancer, sever itchy scalp, sensitivity to the UV coming from them for many people and not enough scientific medical evidence as to how all energy saving light bulbs will effect everyone's health with long term use in their environment.. The only concerns are that governments are cutting down their national energy consumption

  • i heard 9 people died when they dropped a wholeshipment of these bulbs on the docs. thousdands of bulbs broke and released mercury or something into the athmosphere. there was dead seaguls and shit everywhere.

  • @JUNAID187 1000 of these have 5,000 mg of mercury, about as much as 10 old school thermometers. No way it killed anything. Even if it were a million cfl's there is more mercury emitted from burning coal in one hour.

  • I Would Rather Have The Incandessent Bulbs Any Day. I Don`t Like CFLs . And It`s A Lot Of Green Bull Trying To Sell Us On These Toxic Screwie Lamps Witch Are Not Bulbs At All, Unless They Have A Globe Around Them, I Won`t Buy CFLs At All. They Can Make A Incandessent Bulb That Last Longer Then CFLs I Have One From The 50s I`m Using Now . CFLs Look Like Crap In Decorative Fixtures. So This Is To Our Government, Don` Take My Choices Away

  • were do you get a yellow cfl?

  • china imported to america. dont drop it, you will die due to mercury poisoning. be sure to take the 2 month training course on how to handle, recycle, and clean up the bulb if anything bad should happen. >.>

seriously the bulbs have poisonous mercury in them

  • also give off a radiation that cause severe headaches and migraines plus you have to pay at some places to recycle them! the one near me is 80 cents a bulb i rather stick with incandescent lights 1 reason i don't die if they break and i don't get headaches when they are on

  • oh really? something i nver heard. but yes i did hear it costs money to recycle them. i guarantee u though i will never buy those cfl's

  • The irony in all of this is that in their zeal to force themselves down your throat, the Greenies had Congress pass a law *mandating* that bulb manufacturers make the cost of cfl bulbs more in line with incandescent.

Unable to change the laws of the universe at Congressional whim, the manufacturers did the only thing they could: they used cheaper materials, resulting in crappy bulbs -- thus turning off millions of first time consumers to cfl technology.

    The Nanny Staters never learn.

  • Those CFL bulbs are just a joke.

I tried one out, and I fucking hated it, so I put it in the drawer and replaced it with a REAL lightbulb.

  • I have a faucet that EATS CFL's because they last 3 weeks vs the incandescet light lasting 1 year

  • Do any of u guys care about the environment? Fluorescent lights use 75% less energy and the mercury just makes it work better. If u dropped a bulb u wouldn't die fron the mercury!! Also on a study by "Popular Mechanics" it shows that the CFL's light quality is better than incandescents. Really there is no reason to buy incandescents anymore. They save u money, the environment, and the light quality is better!

  • I have to say that after I replaced the incandesent with the CFL lightbulbs, I like the color of the CFL light bulbs. However, even though they're both at 100 watts, the CFL is not as bright as the incandescent. And more importantly, you have to wait till it brightens up. I hopes the engineers will work to invent something better that will be as bright or brighter than incandescent while saving electricity at the same time.

  • lol, you know theres mercury in CFLs so if they break, is that good for the environment hahaha

  • 4MUSKITEERS, i think you're missing the point. CFLs contain mercury and if not properly recycled, our waters and air will contain mercury. Face it, most ppl will not take the time to recyle them. so how do u figure thats good for the environment? the 2nd issue is the government restricting consumer choice. if buyers like CLFs, they'l purchase them. but to ban something that MOST americans want is bull shit. incandecents dont harm nothing but your light bill.

  • (CONTINUED) unfortunatly for u, ur just suckered into believing the "GREENIES" that not using incandecents will save the planet. good luck lol

  • there is nothing wrong with saving the planet but for the government to meddle in our lives, restricting my choice of light bulbs is bull shit. The only harm that an incandecent bulb does is sky rockets your light bill. and thats fine by me cuz to me and MOST ppl they give off much better light. CFLs have shitty light quality. See if u can answer a question. How are we suppose to light our refridgerators with CFLs. CFLs do poorly in cold. Something you probably didnt think about huh

  • (Continued)if you wana light ur house with shitty compact flourecents, thats your right because u you're paying your light bill. Just like I'm paying my light bill so nobody has a right to tell me what light bulbs i use for my house. People like you scare me for the fact that you're ok with the government ruling your life. A communist. I dont know where u live but here in the US we have our freedom to do things as long as ur not hurting anyone. Incadencents are not hurting the planet. Wake up!

  • @4muskiteers unfortunatly for you, you've also been brain washed into all this nonsense about cfls saving our planet. did u know that one of the ways ppl waste energy is by leaving the lights on? even if u have all cfls in ur house, leaving the lights on are still wasting enery. u also waste energy from other electric stuff thats in ur house. u cant just blame it on the light bulb. i dont know about u but im proud of my home and i will not turn my house looking like an office or hospital

  • @4muskiteers climate change is not caused by human beings. it doesnt matter how much energy we use, the climate will always change. if global warming is really happening, then tell me why we had record cold temperatures in miami florida last year? And why did it snow in New Orleans in 2009? if u really believe that an incandescent light bulb is contributing to climate change, then u seriously outa consider going to a mental hospital. only an eco mental case like u would believe this bull shit

  • They make poeple ILL, headaches, migraines, pains.

One lie that this video tells is that they give off the same amount of light. They do not.

you need more bulbs to get the same well it space. At least the ones i buy. Maybe m getting ripped off?

mercury is deadly as well. Dont break them in your home or you WILL be ill from that too.

oh it doesnt matter, by 2012, the incadecents will be OUTLAWED anyway.

  • There is a real great difference between deffierent brands. Just invest a little more to get a way lower warming up time and a more warm light if you would like to.

  • I'll have you know that many of my friends suffer from the diseases that include those symptoms. They have CFL's in their house, and they have never reported getting sick from them.

As with breaking them, not healthy for you at all, but if you properly clean it up and don't breathe it in, you will not be sick or die. And don't be stupid. Put CFL's in a place where they are not likely to be knocked over. For places that are likely, use LED's because they will not break or stop working.

  • @eyesoverskies I am scared....outlawed? Whats wrong with people?This is not europe!

  • Didja ever notice how hard the greenies try to sell you on CFL bulbs? Why is that?

Because CFLs have to be pushed on a public that can see how inferior they are with their own eyes. You'll notice that there aren't entire websites and videos dedicated to convincing you to use incandescent.

  • i am never using thoes because its the most toxic light bulb you can buy on the stupid market it caused my sister to go to the hospital because of mercury poising

  • CFL bulbs are a bad joke if you're trying to light anything more than your desk lamp. I put one in the overhead fixture in my master bathroom, supposedly a powerful 90w cfl bulb.

It was horrendous. The room looked like it was being lit by a nitelite, no joke. Never again.

  • "CFL bulbs are a bad joke if you're trying to light anything more than your desk lamp. I put one in the overhead fixture in my master bathroom, supposedly a powerful 90w cfl bulb.

It was horrendous. The room looked like it was being lit by a nitelite, no joke. Never again."

My experience has been quite the opposite. And studies have shown the opposite in blind tests...respondents preferred the CFL.

The CFLs in my home generate very bright white light. Perhaps you selected the wrong color?

  • I agree. I tried it, and both that and incandescent bulbs are at 100 watts. however, the CFL does not give out much light as incandescent which is darker in my room. I changed it back to incandescent. And I hopes Congress will learn it's lesson and repeal the ban on incandescent bulbs.

  • If you want to feel depressed, tired, angry, forgetful for the cause of saving energy then buy CFLs. But don't think for a minute you are being patriotic as the EPA fully disclosed than NO CFLs are even manufactured in the US. They are imported from CHINA. How rich China will become when we don't even have a choice of bulb to purchase for our homes and business. The cherry on top is that Mercury is toxic and it emits a vapor! Wake up! Using these bulbs is suicide!

  • "Wake up! Using these bulbs is suicide!"

Such dramatic fear mongering is more suicidal that using CFLs. If you smashed a CFL on the floor and immediately went down and snorted the air above it, you likely would not die. You may not even get sick.

Does your same heightened fear apply to the 50% power in the US which we get from mercury emitting coal-fired plants?

Also, you can recycle CFLs. So, if you want to honestly save the environment, use CFLs and when(if) they expire, recycle them.

  • @itry2brational Recycle them? Yeah the fucking capacitors. Might as well integrate a full-fledged circuit board to send the gov't data. Shut the fuck up, hippie.

  • Comment removed

  • so which one has more UV light??

  • Most LED bulbs are still not very bright and are quite expensive in comparison to CFLs. In fact, I think I saw one bulb claiming to be "about as bright" as a 60W incandescent. Price? About $95 a pop!

  • @Madness832 LEDs are not the future, they are more of a joke for lighting than toxic florescent lighting! SHUT UP.

  • @KingMacintosh So tell me penis-breath, do you make it a habit to reply to 3-year-old comments? Even then, your reply was a boatload of fail!

  • @Madness832 the fact that u call somebody "penis-breath shows, not only how ignorant u are but how upset u are. why is this persons's comment a boatload of fail?? Because he has a mind of his own?? Because he'd rather have the freedom to choose what bulbs he can have in his house?? I think that YOUR LIFE is a boatload fail. U seem to believe in everything government tells u. i bet u even write countless letters to congress always complaining about something.

  • @noreaga12326 Maybe because he replied to a three-year-old comment that had nothing to do w/ the wording of his reply. If you dig back, you will see that I said nothing of LEDs being the future; only that they were dim & quite expensive (which was very true @ the time). It's a fail because it seems to me like a drive-by.

  • @Madness832 Just to add: It should also be noted that I made no comment(s) of any kind regarding which type of light bulbs he has in his house. I couldn't give a rat's you-know-what about that. After all, it's his & house & his electric bill.

  • @Madness832 thats exactly the point that i'm trying to get across. if its my house and my light bill, then who is government to tell me how much money i can spend for my energy costs. government buildings and offices around the world are using energy saving lights. that right there should be good enough for government. i wasnt trying to come at u disrespectfully.

  • LED uses 20% less power then CFL, and lasts longer then CFL

  • Most CFL's are too dim for my eyes. However, I recently found a hardware store that sold 40 watt CFL's. I bought six of them. They look giant compared to the puny 13-watt bulbs that are most popular. I'm never going back.

  • CFL are garbage made by the CHinese. Mercury filled time bombs that suck ass at lighting the room. Fuck energy efficiency. Its not even that efficient, it just sucks so much that it doesn't use energy. You use low lfow toilets dont you?

  • @RetiredAFGuy Maybe you'd like to garnish your light bulbs with just a little bit more mercury then?

  • They make CFLs in the US, Mexico, Taiwan and other places - wherever they can get the cheapest labor to make the most profit. Guess what - incandescents are made overseas TOO including China. I dont like who makes them but it's BS to stick with the 1920's attitude. You dont stick with riding horses because cars are made in China, Korea, Japan, etc do you? BTW I love the lower water use and same results with the low flow toilet. Saves me a ton each month on water bills.

  • A ton a month? Since showers and stuff don't use as much as toilets..wait.

My mom has a low flow toilet and when I drop a load, I have to flush twice, before wiping.

  • Guess it might have to do with the shape of the outlet/trap as to whether they work good or not. Ours work great, bought them at Lowes when the old 3 gal monster in the main bath (52 yrs old I imagine it was the original in the house) developed a crack in the base. They work great for us, other people I've heard the same results as us and just the opposite. Odd thing is last night's King of the Hill had this very issue of low flow toilets - odd coincident I guess.

  • One thing that really bothers me at my college is that so many toilets are automatic that may flush 5-6 times when you're on the pot. These are 2.1 gallons per flush...it's incredible how much that is of a waste. And while it's flushing at jet power for 30 seconds, you wonder who designed it..it would never take that much power to flush something. Why can't just make a short small strong burst of half a gallon or something...pff

  • You are wrong. Check the Energy Star site which is the Deparment of Energy and the EPA, which state that

Zero CFLs are manufactured here in the US!!!

They are all from CHINA! ALL CONTAIN TOXIC MERCURY!

  • mercury is what make them work idiot

  • DUH! and mercury poisoning in the land fills to poison the air, land and water is the after life result.

  • "DUH! and mercury poisoning in the land fills to poison the air, land and water is the after life result."

Coal-fired power plants emit 3x more Hg in powering incandescents compared to powering a CFL, INCLUDING the 5mg inside.

TCLP(Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) compliant CFLs are considered no more toxic than any other waste/garbage you throw away. See the EPA for more.

Holding on to old technology only because its made in the USA is not progress, its regression.

  • Let me try some numbers:

The average household has 50 light bulbs, with an average life of 10 years. Each bulb contains 20mg of mercury, so the mercury waste from one household is 1 gram every decade. With a toxic TLV of 25 microgrammes per cubic metre, that is potentially 40,000 cubic metres of toxic mercury vapour.

There are 30 million households in the UK alone, so that represents 30 metric tonnes of mercury released every decade, enough to pollute over 1000 cubic kilometres per decade.

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs release highly toxic mercury vapour when broken. The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) is only 25 micrograms per cubic meter (OSHA).

It will cost your local authority dearly to provide for their disposal.

They are not dimmable, they are slow to warm up, have a tendency to flicker, and have a poor color.

They will not save much electricity. If you normally need to heat your home, the so-called 'waste' heat from conventional bulbs helps heat your home.

  • The General Electric 6 pack's good though, only lasts 5 years. To know the actual light output, compare Lumens/Luminescense rating, ecobulb 13 watt replaces 60 watt bulbs, yet puts out like 75 watt. the 900 Lumens output, the General Electric version 825 but it's 60 watt version Lumens 865 however, the lifetime standard bulb 1000 hours, GE 13 watt is 8000 hours, ecobulb atleast 10,000 hours. rated at a standard of leaving on atleast 4 hours a day.

  • Indcandescent will be dumped into landfill's more because they are improperly disposed of and lights don't last as long so they are dumped more regularly.

It's cheaper to buy expensive bulbs in bulk than it is buying them individualy. Ecobulb 3 pack is $7.77. indivisually is $3.58 on up so doesn't take rocket scientist to see the price difference.

  • I don't imagine people will throw the bulbs away since the mecury is ssaid to be second most toxic substance in the world, but rather simply replace them through company. The ecobulbs have 9 year waranties, and since you can get em at Walmart if you have a problem once you get em or get ones that aren't bright as you want just return them at store you got.

  • And since you won't have all lights turned on at once all the time you'll use even less energy than that because the estimate is rated if you've got all the lights turned on and leave them on at once.

Half the time lights are left on for awhile once you flip the switch so you get used to the warmup time and forget about it. If the bulb or package of bulbs is bad might take longer to lightup or won't lightup at all and won't be as bright.

  • Energy Saver Bulbs do put out more light than standard bulb of same rating a bit so they're a bit brighter, that's why instead of using a 75 Watt bulb can use a 60 watt compared version instead.

Instead of using 2 lightbulbs in a 2 lightbulb fixture I use only 1 now and put an old non burned out incandescent in the other socket.

  • 21 bulbs. 75 Watts * 21 = 1575 Watts 60 Watts * 21 = 1260 Watts 40 Watts * 21 = 800 Watts If you have a security/floodlights 260 Watts. After Energy Saver bulb Conversion: 11 Bulbs in use now. 13 Watts * 11 = 143 Watts. Floodlight 23 to 26 Watts. General Electric: $10.58 6 Bulb Pack 13 Watts Each Compared Against 60 Watt.
  • the only problem is it emits electromagnetic field(bad for humans) and also contains deadly mercury which would be ecological disaster if millions would start throwing these in the garbage ; the solution is diode bulbs they start to make them more and more powerful or magnetic light, but this one is heavily guarded by our very own government (free energy = no crowd control)

  • Compact fluorescent lamps do not produce as much light as 'equivalent' incandescent lamps. Compact fluorescents only produce their rated light output at certain ambient temperatures 10-30 minutes after turned on when brand new. light output from a compact fluorescent lamp decreases >20% over the lamp and if operated over or under its optimum design temperature. Also the 'standard equivalence table' for compact fluorescents is optimized for 240 volt lamps.

  • I would think that tossing the new CFL bulb in the trash creates more landfill. I don't know if they are recyclable, but they take up more room after compacting them then an ordinary bulb. I guess if recycling were easily available before we landfill 10 million, I see how these will help in the long run.

  • You screwed the bulb in wrong. You should never screw in a CFL by the glass, you should screw it in by the ballast.

  • I invite everyone to read this article on CFL:

(Youtube usually blocks URLs, so copy the "URL below and replace the + signs with dots)

    sound+westhost+com/articles/incandescent+htm#in2

  • there not that bad i just replaced my old ones with newer ones unless i pulled them out my ceiling lights nobody would know diffrence

  • A compact fluorescent light bulb uses 1/4 of the energy of incandescent light bulbs. Just type in energy efficient light bulb in your youtube search engine. They actually test the current, voltage, and ultimately calculate the power used. So yeah, you bet your ASS they use less energy. Finally, the amount of energy saved by using CFL bulbs is small when compared to the average power bill. I find it humorous when you say they "consume the same power" without any controlled testing.

  • 1 star.

    cfl bulbs are garbage

  • Well some do last that long but you need to check the box and get one made in the USA such as "lights of america brand "vs China or go find a CF fixture with an integrated ballast vs using the integrated ballast as this solves the cooling issues for the ballast.

A sad fact is 70% of these bulbs are junk so you gotta be careful and shop around.

  • thomas edison did not invent the bulb. he "improved it". compact fluorescents are much better than the incandescants, I have replaced all traditional ones with them. even some dimmable ones

  • dimmable lights don't work with floresents, last time i tried the light just blinked really fast.

    -KEVIN-

  • For them to work right they have to be the expensive micro controller ballasted ones not the cheap feedback oscillator based ones.

Pretty much the duty cycle of the dimmer is just too slow so the CFL ballast must instead be able to check the duty cycle of the AC going into it and then adjust the duty cycle of it's high speed switching power supply which operates at 40KHz to 200KHz so you don't see flicker.

In short a good dimmable CFL will not be cheap.

  • yea i found out about that, they cost about $12 per bulb.

    -KEVIN-

  • @recordcrazy23 cfls are gloomy and give off piss colored lighting. if u prefer to have ur house looking like an office or an airport, then ur taste is very poor

  • @noreaga12326 Very yellowish light makes me sleepy.

  • @ThinkingBetter lol i'm sure it does. thats one of the reasons why i prefer incandescents than cfls. incandescents has the relaxed light quality that u cant from cfls. althought edison bulbs is mostly heat, its very welcomed in the winter. During the summer months, i dont leave the lights on as much. i like flourecent lighting, just not the CFLs. i prefer the old skool flourecents. (Tubes, Circular lights etc etc)

  • @noreaga12326 And they give me fucking headaches too. My parents insist on using them, say I can pay the bills then, but don't we know the Baby Boomers as a whole are fucking retarded. Oh well, I'm going to be on my own very soon out of liberal retard breeding facilities as well!, and my apartment is going to be mercury-free with nice home-like lighting. When I own a house some day, It won't be laden with PVC and CFL, mercury, and "energy-efficiency", that's for damn sure!!

  • @KingMacintosh well they probably do save a bit more energy but not by much. u probably notice that when u turn on a cfl, they take a while to warm up. So ur keeping it on to wait for a warm up. That right there is wasting energy. When ur light bill goes up, it doesnt matter how much energy u think ur saving. you're still gona pay more money on ur light bill. cfls are a rip off. They dont last as long as ur told it does, and their lighting quality is ugly as shit.
