The 6 part story: I got stuck on a steep sided beach near Lano in Western Australia last Winter. Several other 4wd's were stuck in the sand near the water line also.

The car was bellied out and 6 ft shorebreakers were smashing into the side of the car and spraying water over the roof. My dog jumped out of the back of the ute and got dumped by a set wave. We frantically let the tyre pressure down to 6psi while in knee deep white water. It was very soft. My mate went to find help. The car didn't budge. Water was in the car but not over the seats. Sea water was draining out between the doors between waves.

After 20 minutes i gave up digging and any chance of a self rescue and just maintained a trench around the car as each receding wave was depositing bulk sand around the car.

Finally 3 people in a modified hilux dual cab V8 stopped. They had great clearance, plenty of power and properly deflated large sand tyres. They pulled up and I ran to chuck my snatch strap on their front tow point. But there was none. I told the driver and we checked the back to see if it had a proper tow point. It did!

So he went to turn his car around on the steep slope, the soft sand on the slope won and he ended up stuck near the shorebreakers like me. He was not happy at all.

So now 2 cars were stuck getting hit by shorebreakers. In the meantime my mate had ran a km to find a bloke in a 100 series with properly deflated 35's and real good clearance who was in the process of helping someone else from a similar predicament.

The bloke in the 100 series got the guy he was helping clear from the waves and told him that he would come back to finish the rescue. He raced up the beach to my car and pulled me out with surprisingly little fuss. I then pulled out the v8 hilux followed by another landcruiser who had become stuck in the meantime. I had a camera and video on back seat that remained dry but didn't have the presence of mind to use either.

That was the fun bit because many hours were spent cleaning the car. Inside the seats and floor came out and everything was washed with fresh water, dried and replaced a week later. Outside was washed basically everyday for a week. Oil in the diffs and gearbox checked. The undercarriage subframe and rear drum brakes were chock full of sand. The following weekend I painted the undercarriage black and fishelene oiled potential rust spots.

A lot of work but longterm damage was minimised.

naah, cars are pretty much resistant to salt or else they won't survive the road salt used in the northern states. Just about the brake discs and drums are exposed. The rest is covered in paint or sound deadening material.

TIP1 when picking up a jet ski or boat get it high and dry on the beach before bringing trailer to it. Reverse trailer back and use the winch on the trailer to pick it up off the sand. TIP2 if you must pull it out of the water let your tyres down before you go down there.
