Ok, I think this song puts energy (to me) to the once in a lifetime notion, that they later named.... , seriously I think that they were in the place where the light (infinite wisdom colloids with unity and power) hits, and that is perpetually changing,... so what ever that means to YOU. I think it means to me GRAB the moment that is a 'soon folding wave' in your world for fun!
I like this a great deal, and it surprised me that I only found it now,,, after all the noise I catalogued in my screener. some times it seems that the world is wrong, I the other heads have said ! & I think this was when they invented COCAINE
I like this a great deal, and it surprised me that I only found it now,,, after all the noise I catalogued in my screener. some times it seems that the world is wrong, I the other heads have said !
This is RIDICULOUS. They start off great and it just becomes more and more and more infectious as it goes on, they could still be playing this in an alternative dimension, it'd be the best thing ever.
@sevendaughters ....so well said...fyi ..best LIVE Talking Heads album..."the name of this band is the talking heads" 1982 they do an awesome version of this song
Hey, give it up for Tina, too. How many bass players have the confidence to welcome a better player (Busta Jones) into the band, and then stand up and match him note-for-note? Plus she looks great in that white dress. And further proof that wimps can't play bass: check out her biceps.
adrian belew is awesome because he was in king crimson and played in frank zappas band, having this on your music resume means you can literally play anything.
wow sonic youth, (a fellow new york city band that came out in early 80's) would love to have made that solo Adrien played at 1:58. Talking Heads are a lot better of a band, but I still like SY more. Talking Heads can groove
Possibly the worst editing/camera work in the history of editing/camera work. How they managed to show every square inch of the stage EXCEPT Belew on his second solo is amazing. No matter, still a great vid.
The rhythmic layering in this is fantastic, as well as the vocal counterpoint. I believe Eno conceived all the 'response' backgrounds against which Byrne wrote the main vocal.
Wish I could find someone as moved by this music as you, whom I could date. Eyes on hands. Me and my sisters are always questioned as to why this is our favorite band. With live performances like this, why not.
I have this whole concert loaded as favorites and homage should be paid to all who have posted these. Only which I could buy it in DVD format.
Coulda made all of their next 3 records w/ this lineup prefably live. Very canny and over the top.the mix of white and black styles almost competing w/ each other. Oh and there is that monster on stage called Belew!
I like the creative editing. The director often focuses on one shot for ages, not like the ridiculous jump cuts in concert films now. Today they seem to think that no one has the patience or intelligence to absorb anything that lasts longer than one second.
@stratboy8 yea., maybe this instant gratification Crap that happens now for the trending future i see, maybe it will end up being something that will pay off where I normally would assume the opposite
@mrjesus1890 Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. I've seen Adrian live with Bowie & King Crimson and he is indeed a fantastic guitarist. I used to love this version of the 'heads but recently I find it a bit...I dunno..'arty?'
Great band but I prefer TH without the screaming solos.
How can anyone watch this video and start making comparisons with other artists? What is the point of comparing? This performance can stand on its own. Thanks for posting.
Great to see Adrian Belew in action, but where the hell was Eno? This is the best track from Remain In Light, and it's interesting to note that Robert Palmer contributed percussion to it, Chris Frantz having played on Palmer's Johnny and Mary.
@peterblack70 Eno? Eno isn't a live performer. The studio is his instrument. Has said he doesn't even like concerts and is himself, too physically frail to be onstage for long periods of time. Hasn't performed since 1976 with his band 801, I believe. If he has, I'm sure it was a limited performance.
Too good for words almost. The rhythm, the swing, the harmonies, THAT mental solo at the end, just fantastic. That's got to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
Thanks for uploading this & to copyright holders for not taking it down. What a great, impressive performance. So many great performers and brilliant compositions. Moving even on a bitty computer monitor with tiny speakers.
Fantastic! I wish I could travel back in time. That would certainly be a place I wont miss to see this. But it's great to see it here too. I think youtube may can be a great library - the chances are there... for all to access.
I wish the camera work had been a little better... would have been nicer to see Belew on his second solo, instead of 10 shots of Tina or a view from completely behind the band... that aside though, this is one of the sickest live performance videos I've seen in a long long time.
I can only imagine what it must have been like to have seen Talking Heads on this tour had one not gotten the album first.
I mean, the Heads were great before this, but not like THAT. If you were just expecting Psychokiller and Take Me to the River and then they come onstage with Belew and a full band, playing this and Crosseyed and Painless, you probably got your pants blown off.
The only bad part of this video is when Adrian is playing his solo the monkey who directed it seems to think its a bass solo and keeps showing Tina...
@idiamin59 This song and this performance is so overwhelmingingly good, it makes me feel so small and worthless, kind of like a mollusk. Can you dig that?
@ hawkeyepearce: I don't quite think so. That some pretentious people make repetitive music, or that some repetitive music was made by pretentious people, may be closer to truth.
Presently I don't think I'd listening to this album for 30 years as you have, but I'm open-minded enough not to stop listening to it altogether.
The only good song on the overrated Remain In Light, imo. Yeah the album is neither repulsive nor too challenging - so it's easy to profess to like - but you just won't fall in love with more than two of the songs, most of which are obviously pretentiously repetitive.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@bythasword: It seems to me to be a soulless, filmsy novelty song. I just don't know why Talking Heads are seen as nicely innovative while Pink Floyd, despite at least Echoes and Shine on You Crazy Diamond, are accused of being pretentious and too serious. David Byrne doesn't even have a good voice or charisma. Very few people would genuinely prefer Remain in Light to Dark Side of the Moon.
@awnplmigo Wow, talk about comparing apples to oranges, bud. lol, "Doesn't have a good voice or charisma", that's beyond absurd. Millions of fans would beg to differ.
@barncat35 Bud, just like everyone, I can't help being quite interested in the works Brian Eno has taken part in. After Remain in Light, I open-mindedly bought and listened to Fear of Music (cos I quite liked "Cities"), yet I was disappointed again. You may love the arrangements, but Talking Heads really lack melodies, they're chiefly a novelty band, and an overrated one. I'd rather listen more to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, doing without all the mediocre vocal tunes.
@awnplmigo you really are dilluded if you think talking heads are a novelty band.77 and more songs have tunes which are every bit as melodious as anything the beatles ever did
To call this a filmsy (or even flimsy) novelty song is one of the more audacious assertions I've heard in some time. David Byrne was never going to challenge Scott Walker or Otis Redding in the vocal stakes but he has a very distinctive, evocative and effective voice. Turning to the Floyd, the difference between Shine on You and this is cavernous. While I quite like the first 3 minutes of Shine on You it then becomes ponderous masterbation. This is urgent rhythmic melodic magnificence
@daegrant I haven't really written Talking Heads off, but I'm baffled that, so many years since punk has been out of fashion, Pink Floyd's music is still so often denounced as exceedingly pretentious. Along with prog rock, there are art rock, post-punk, etc., everybody, in trying to push the boundaries, has somehow taken risks. What's so wrong with the Floyd?
@awnplmigo david byrne is one of the most charismatic front men ever.and although i agree dark side is a better album, remain in light definitely comes close
@sydbarret1973 Thanks for honestly admitting that you think Dark Side is the superior one. And, you know, it has been astonishingly popular. Despite Johnny Rotten's hostility, I still don't get why '70s Pink Floyd are so notorious that almost no top musician has namechecked them.

@brouummmm Yes in fact many of my friends used to feel offended because I used to tell them that Talking heads were way ahead their time

I've gotten to meet Adrian twice in the past two years. Once at a solo show and once with his Power Trio.
The guy is a ball of energy. It would be impossible to have a bad time with him in the room.

Adrian Belew is amazing! Wow I have followed his work with King Crimson, Laurie Anderson, and in discovering this work with the Talking Heads.
If only I could play guitar like him. Wow. bloody amazing.

FZ discovered him before he played with any of those folks. His work with Zappa is excellent also. Cheers....

it was great, it really was, but why did Tina get a bass solo when the black guy was doing most of it?
