The glare actually doesn't bother me much.. I don't like having the lights on in my house so it's not a big deal to have the glare on the screen.. so I don't need to spend that extra money
Just letting everyone know that if you take the "glare" version of any MacBook Pro or MacBook Air and lower the brightness it helps... a lot! And if not go for the glare and if it bothers you install your own anti glare sheet for a lot less money
AHHH! i just read all the comments about glossy vs anti-glare....now decision making just got a lot worse! >.< ...anyways...i'll just wait for what the next upgrade will be..... how about anti-glare with the appeal of glossy? wouldn't that just make everything a lot better?
I have the new 17' macbook pro which has the "anti glare" and that is great when i am outside my home and I can NOT control the lights around me and that is perfect for me... BUT .... when i am home I hook my 17" macbook pro up to my 27" thunderbolt display that is "glossy" and that is great too as I CAN control the lights behind me & all around me in the room !!! ... Sooo this set up gives a users the the BEST of BOTH worlds .... "anti glare & glossy" ... give it a try :) :)
Depends on how you plan to use it. If surfing or email and just basic web stuff, and air is a great solution. If doing lots of heavy storage like Photoshop or massive iTunes library, then I would go pro. I have both and understand that one is for different functions than the other.
air is good, but only if you're always on the go and dont care about using cd's/dvd's, you'd have to carry a external optical drive with you if you buy mb air, on pro you can have a lot of upgrades...
I want to get the 15" hi-res glossy, but they are not available in-store. I don't wanna wait for the 1 week shipment, so I got no choice and decided to go for the 15" hi-res AG.
That iPhone you use outdoors and in all sorts of lighting conditions ? It has the "glare" screen. My point here is that the reflection problems with the MacBook Pro glossy screen are exaggerated, imo. I believe that the iPad also uses the glossy screen. For deep blacks and vivid colors...get the glossy screen. The matte screen may be the most useable under extreme circumstances, but it's dull-looking compared to the glossy.
Both look awesome. Although I have to admit that the glossy one looks more premium, but it is not as comfortable as the anti-glare to look at. Anyway, regardless of its amazing specs I will not buy the MBP until the new one comes out. I bought the MBA because it is has futuristic design of laptop
i find my 13 inch and amazing computer but it doesn't have grafiic nor can you get the hi res antiglare ... the only reason i want the antilglare becuase it is silver in staid of the ugly gloss that holds dirt
I have now got both 13 inch glossy and 15 antiglare. but two things that I personally think make the antiglare better is, it is easier to use in sun light and if you do work that will be printed it is better as it more realistic the way it comes out. (personally I also like the look of the aluminium around the screen.) And what ever you do don't get a antiglare screen protector as the one I had ruined the screens look
The glossy is much much richer, but if using a 17-inch I would for SURE go with Anti-Glare. 15 inch antiglare is a little bit much and glossy should be fine.
I think the anti-glare looks best aesthetically on the 17" model because the borders to the screen are thinner than the 15" and 13" models, giving you better focus on the screen itself.
There should be a HIGH-RESOLUTION option for the glossy screen aswell.. I love anti-glare but it looks so ugly.. the black "frame" around the screen is a perfect contrast to the rest of the mac. And the looks is almost 80% of the reason why I am buying a mac :P
I just realised that the two Dell monitors (twin, one pc) I have at work are glossy and anti glare.
The only time you see a reflection (it's mirror like) in the glossy one is when the screen is black, which almost never happens on websites etc. When it's white there is no reflection what so ever (even from lights). So I never notice.
And when I drag a website or image over to the anti glare screen it is horribly dull and
unappealing.
So now I've decided, glossy Macbook Pro it is. :-)
Chances are that your light at your desk will be on a side, not behind you, unless you want to create shade all over your papers. Also chances are that roof lights are above you, not behind you. So no reflexes will be seen. However, if you happen to get light behind you from a window or anything, you can make your screen brighter, or just move your screen a little. Screens are not made to receive light, they are made to project light...
Alright...so obviously the antiglare is a lot better given the circumstance, but it seems as if the one with the glare gives the impression of richer colours, and I just like the glossy look of it to begin with, as well as the black borderline. Is there a definite difference in appearance from the two besides those factors?
@delshayDiCamilliano It does appear richer, but the reflection can be a bit much. Like to watch the movies and not watch myself watching movies. Kind of scary.
I had the glossy 15 inch MacBook pro and sold it to get the AntiGlare, but then I realized the mistake I made because the higher resolution was giving me eye strain and I don't like to be zooming in and out to read. The glossy one is way better looking and the lower resolution to me is perfect for reading without having to zoom in.
I Bought a Macbook Pro (15 inch) 2 days ago, and I like the glare one, because too much white looks ugly, so the extra black is nicer (in my opinion).... Also the glare one makes it feel and look like an IOS device
it's weird that a few years ago you had to pay extra for glossy when matte was standard... and now glossy is standard and you have to fork out extra for matte.
Still matte is superb for all use. Too bad iMacs dont have the option :S
all i want is the anti-glare on the 13". i have a 13" MB right now and can't imagine carrying a bigger laptop around campus; but, the glossy screen SUCKS. my brother has one and i can hardly see anything even with basic indoor lighting.
I upgraded from a 13" Macbook to a 15" MacBook Pro with Hi-Res Matte screen. The matte is much better, in my personal opinion. Yes, the black bezel looks cooler, but the part you actually look at - the screen - is far superior. I don't even notice the silver bezel any more. There is one upside to the glossy and that's durability. You have a glass panel protecting the screen, where as the matte isn't protected.
@bluejazz04 you could argue this, except that they will charge about $250 for a replacement of JUST THE GLASS. I had an event with this, and I'm currently typing this message on it. It still works fine, but there is a huge crack along the right side of my screen. So, I'm not sure the durability could be said to be much better.
@gryphl Good point. When I say "most durable", I mean it's protected from small stuff like scratches, finger pokes, etc. But something more "heavy duty"...yeah, you're screwed either way.
@MasterFProductions Of course. With all the design work I do, it really helps to find true colors. Not so good watching a movie, but that is what AppleTV is for.
The silver frame on the anti glare screen looks great and the non glossy effect looks much better than the shinny one. I wish apple could offer the screen options for the 13" pro. I hate the fact that I have to go for a 15" just because the screen.
i know its not quiet the same as the antiglare screen that mac makes but just go buy a dang antiglare screen protector. it'll save you tons. if you dont care that much about the screen quality obviously.

I can't stand being able to see myself when I'm trying to pay attention to what's on the screen. Glossy is only good for watching movies or playing games in the dark, but it you want to work, and do it during hours that there is sunlight, anti-glare makes that possible. I got anti-glare on my MBP 17" because after a year of using a glossy screened iMac at work I vowed never to buy glossy myself.
i cant decide, i know its gonna be a bitch if i go outside with the glossy screen but i think it looks so much better, the anti glare looks so stupid with the silver boarding :(
@LovableBeats You can just buy the glossy screen macbook. Then additionally purchase a antiglare screen protector (which costs less than apple). That way you have the best of both worlds (the good looking glossy and the comfortable looking antiglare), plus you can always go back by peeling it off.
A lot of people don't get that when they buy the Matt display with the Anti-Glare, they're getting a screen that scatters the light and reduces reflection, therefore making the colors shallower. Apple switched to an LED backlit glossy screen for a reason: more contrast and deeper colors that pop out.
The anti glare screen looks good, but it looks physically ugly with that stupid looking silver bezel. The glossy or glare screen looks esthetically appealing, but it has a glare which can effect how the colors look. It's your choice, ugly with good display, or good looking with bad display.
I used to design with a Sony Trinitron for years. It wasn't until matte that anyone started complaining about glare. I wouldn't have bright lights facing my equipment, glossy screen or not.

@RinozerosJanni If getting the antiglare, it only comes with the aluminum ring around it. It actually looks pretty nice and the screen has been amazing.
@TheRedMacDaddy Does the screen feels foggy or something like that ? ,, i mean is it the quality of what you see in the Glossy model better than it in the Anti-Glare or they are the same ?
The Glossy display looks better... the glass to glass black bezel just gives it extra beauty... but thats just me personally... really wish these laptops weren't so expensive though
@bronze5420 I agree. I ended up going for a 15" simply because last year I wanted anti-glare and an i5 processor. The 2010 MacBook Pro in the 13" still used the Intel Core 2 Duo and did not have an anti-glare option.
