Americans don't understand other accents, period, i'm Australian and understood her perfectly the first two times. This video is perfect for useless americans (a little redundant I know) but pointless for everyone else.
What I find is that, even though English pronunciation is sometimes really hard for non-native speakers, English speaking Canadians are very tolerant of funny accents. They are pragmatic: if one can understand whatever it is that another is trying to say, then everything is alright.
Try speaking French (their kind of French) in Québec. Then you will know what a hard time is.
(Sometimes I think they pretend to not understand. They can not be that dumb, can they?)
Hi. I'm from Spain and here the English that we learn is the British one, but I like to learn by myself so I use to see movies and TV shows in original version and all of them are American, so I use the American English. The other day in my English class I had a new teacher and when she realized that I speak with American dialect she got angry!!! And she said that my English was horrible!! I got really mad with it. It's unbelievable but it's true, and I think that this situation is very sad.
First to people who think he is being rude, he isn't. He is just doing what any American would do if they had no idea what you just said to them. It's important to realize what's rude in one country can be normal in another - ethnocentrism is a real danger to intercultural communication! Akiko said, btw: "I want to go wine tasting at a local winery." "I really want to sample some local wine."
OMFG! English do not talk 'powsh' most of us talk normally but with no american accent. Me n me friends dont talk like dat anyweys so u american think what you want but yhoour wron.xx LMAO!
You are right man. I am studying here in Korea and every korean says "l" for "r". No Russia but Lushia. They can't differenciate "love" and "rub" also.
This is very good idea. I wonder if their are such videos for learning Japanese, Spanish, and French. I am trying to self-teach myself and it is quite difficult. I live in an area where there are quite a many immigrants so hand, eye signals, and body language are important. I understand most, but I came across someone I couldn't understand because of the thick accent, and I felt so horrible. >.>
Hey, someone recently posted a comment and said "keep up the good work matey." Really wanted to reply to this comment but pressed the wrong button and it was deleted. If you visit this page, please post your comment again. Thanks.
thanks for responcing and you are right.when i came to england two years ago i had the same problem british english is difficult to understand than american or atleast it was for me back then.but know i like british more than american dilect or accent whatever you call it.
whatever. you should learn english in british way.speak english as english do.simply because it belongs to them and they have got original accent(now before you start bombarding racial comments on me let me tell you i live in england but i am not english)
Hi. I am happy you decided to express your thoughts but you should consider this. Asking an American to speak British English is the same as asking someone from Japan or any other country to use only one dialect when most people use several dialects in their own countries. The diversity of English throughout the world makes the language even more interesting. Thanks for your comment.
why learnning british nowaday when u have option? amercan has evolved and been better in many ways. it standarized; vast media and communication is already americanized. please pull ur head out of ur b@#t as soon as possible
There's no such thing as original accent. Language changes over the centuries. And it does not belong to them simply because it's named 'English.' It belongs to all native English speakers.
Don't forget Americans' language descended from England. There was no alternative native language. Colonized America has always been native English speaking. They got it from their the motherland, England.
Considering the comments made, you might want to consider closing the comments section. Or have the student explain in Japanese at the beginning of the clip the purpose of what you doing.
Actually I prefer to keep the comments section open for those who post useful comments. Those who like to post nasty comments simply make themselves and their countries look awful. Hopefully those people will change. Thank you for posting.
Hey, I really appreciate your comment earlier about the intent of the video and your support. The situation shown in the video is exactly what non-native English speakers encounter when they come to the United States. Unfortunately many Americans do not study other languages and are not as tolerant as they should be when speaking with a non-native English speaker. Some of my students in the United States were sad and upset when their pronunciation was not understood. Thank you again.

ooohhhh poor baby... You don't want to admit that US is the most fucking country of the world...Americans always want wars and they don't respect anyone!!!
Consider these points. Thank goodness the United States stepped in to end an awful war over 60 years ago, in which your country was an aggressor. No doubt you spend a considerable amount of time listening to American movies and American music. If America is such an awful place as you say, why are an unbelievable number of people, including people from your country, doing anything they can to learn English and move to the United States?
I really appreciate your videos and I think you are a very good person. Respect this comment I certanly have to make a point. If an unbelievable number of people (all over the world) are doing anything possible we can do to lear English and we move to this country is "only" because it is the richest country in the planet and we could starve in our countries or subordinate ourselves to and in yours. I really like this country and most people are just GREAT!!! (Including you) I hope I am clear :)
A country is seen as if it's leaders where the only people who live there. I have lived in Los Angeles for two years and I have to tell that almost every single person here is so kind, polite, with good manners and really respectful; and for those people I see this country as the great country it really is. Unfurtunately, the world doesn't see those people, instead, they see the people on the power. My point is, the US is great for it's great people (wich are the most) :D
There are plenty of nice people from your country. Really unfortunate you choose to promote yourself as such an awful example. You should take more pride in yourself and your country and not make such awful comments. Try to be a bit nicer and make this world a better place.
The instructor, Howie, dramatized what would happen if a Japanese person would encounter from your average American if they came to the US speaking English with poor pronunciation. He was not maliciously rude to the actress. It was a good infomercial for his lessons. Many people who post to YouTube could learn something about storytelling from this video.
Mr. English Instructor, your lessons are great, but scorpiomooselove nade a valid point. Even though you did not intend to be rude, that's how you came across and it's not a good example of presentation. Hope you take this as a constructive criticism. Presenting a positive example would come across better to the viewers. Besides, you didn't appear funny even if you intended to. More power to you!
Ok, I can understand Akiko with the incorrect pronounciation. It's really stupid of the teacher to be like, "HUH? WHAT?" He should at least try to understand, jeez he's so rude!
I like the video! The teacher voice is very clear, I did not understood what the Japanese girl said, he could repeat what she said. I am learn English and I want to learn the right way.
Thank you for help me and so many other people to learn English.
