For mary I think mcglyn could have tried to sound a little bit more lispy like mary originally sound and not so raspy like mc glyn sounds.James could be good sounding too, but when he says "all I need from you is an answer" h kinda does this typicall cliche gaspyanime tone which irritated me I think what they did for eddie was cool because have you ever had a nightmarewhere it was like your voice was gone and then you woke up to find that your throat was extremely dry? that seems to work :).

The "bad" controls do this as well. Silent Hill 2 is an expertly-crafted game, and every little piece fits together like a puzzle. The game is not perfect, but changing anything risks pulling the bottom support out of a Jenga tower. If you don't do very carefully, the whole thing comes crashing down.

Thank you for actually explaining this. I've been trying to argue these same points with people for half a year now. The weird, not-quite-right voice acting from the game actually CONTRIBUTES in a positive way to the sense of uneasiness and awkwardness that the environment and narrative also convey.

To be honest I like both old and new voices, both Marys/Marias are great, I prefer the old James though over the new one, and the new Eddie over the old one, when I get the game I'll probably finish the game two times, once with the old and once with the new

In my opinion, I did like the voice acting in the original games. It's not the best but, It lets you in a limbo state because you really can comprehend what everybody is trying to say. It lets everything to your imagination and it doesn't sound overacting like this new voice change. I know everybody isn't going to agree with me but I really don't care... Have any of you even PLAYED Silent Hill 2 or 3? The voice acting in those, especially in 2, sucked SO BAD. I for one am very excited about the new VAs. I have a little info that people here might be interested and respect. I read that Silent Hill HD is not only going to have new voices but you will also be able to choose between playing the game with the new voices or the original so I realy don't know what the big deal is. Personaly I'm going to look forward to both because I no longer have my original copy so this means I can play the original or the redubed version.

Oh god I started to laugh when you mentioned how people think they know what acting is because they watched the Oscars once. I've heard people say they think that the SH2 voice acting is awful because, "I'm an actor SO I KNOW." Fuck you. Just because you think you're an actor doesn't mean you know your own ass from a hole in the ground.

It all comes down to personal preference. Some people think Nicholas Cage is a good actor, while I think he has the personality of shit on a plate.

This video is a bit obsolete now, the old voices are back, the reason for the new voice were because konami didnt want to deal whit the legal problems whit the cast (not only Cihi). If you want a good interviewn look for Dana´s recent interviewn whit Guy Cihi on that guy whit glasses or just google it.

Admitted, the new voice acting isn't terrible just out of place and not fitting into the original. The logic behind this particular re-release is kinda peculiar (though you've already stated that). I will admit that the new James is not bad and sounds a bit like Guy. Eddie however I cannot say is bringing good acting, he just sounds like a bad Steve Blum impersonator.

I honestly thought the voice actors did a great job with their roles - they sounded "real", like whos speaking is really the character on the screen, and not just some voice synced with a 3D model.

@punkduderock That probably won't ever happen. Team Silent disbanded after SH4, and most of the creative leads stepped down after SH3. Even Akira Yamaoka is exclusively producing Downpour. Silent Hill will never be what it once was, and that's just the way it is. The best we can hope is that, as Konami shells around the license to make money, it at least falls into the hands of those who know what to do with it, as it did with Shattered Memories (IMO).

I think that this series needs a reboot they should just start fresh one idea that i always loved was the camera angle in silent hill 4 it was really scary and refreshing yet no one has dare to make a silent hill game like that. I think they should do a real remake of the first one with that stile of camera

They cant just redo the voice. They would have to rebuild james from the ground up using a new model an mocap. Otherwise it just looks poorly dubed. Guy also didnt even know silent hill 2 was released on platnum, xbox an pc and he didnt even find out about the dvd that came with the ps2 version until a fan asked him about it.  He is owed money for all these releases. Konami didnt want to back pay him for all the different versions and as a result didnt want him for the hd collection.

I totally agree and I think the majority of fans do as well, if you need to change something then only do it if it complements what you are changing, the voice acting for SH 2 was never brilliantly acted but it is perfect for that game, changing the voices completely has the potential to change the motivation of the characters, in the original Eddie deteriorates slowly from being off-centre to complete psychopath,will these things stay in the game? Does McGlynn even know this is meant to happen?

Guy Cihi knew from the start, he mentioned a few months before SH2 that Konami had spoken to him. Also as for the acting, these are unprocessed voices not properly inserted into the game yet, they're raw voices, I'm pretty sure Guy Cihi's James would have sounded odd with raw audio

Something must be going on with the original cast and Konami because this will probably be the first "HD Upgrade" game collection that will have new voice acting, they never did that with god of war or sly, or ico/shadow colossus collections? I do prefer the old cast more even though mary and troy are fantastic actors, I just found for some reason they don't fit the characters. Guy sounded like a normal ... guy and troy sounds like snow (ff13) preforming theater. I have the original on ps2 :D
