Fantastic ! I have always loved this song.Listening to this it's like being there. What a buzz and what a master. We love you George forever : )....YES YOU!
Ugh! Poor George! He spent the whole of his life trying to prove he was an equal to John and Paul, and then...ironically, managed to prove just the opposite. That weak voice, almost effeminate, was never meant for solo singing. This song is embarrassing. Little wonder the Beatles (including George Martin) refused so much of his "music".
@james28if - Your hero...who professed that one should take care of the planet and our bodies...literally SMOKED HIMSELF TO DEATH. Now....THAT'S "embarrassing"!
@TwoUselessLegs That's a pretty cruel thing to say. First of all just because he died of cancer doesn't mean he got it from smoking. I'm currently battling cancer and I don't smoke. Second at least he was giving off a positive message rather than negative.
Leon Russell played throughout the sessions for 'All Things Must Pass,' and therefore if 'You' was tracked in that period, it stands to reason that Leon's piano is on this song. George Harrison knew how to credit personnel on his sessions. The 1975 sessions for the remainder of 'Extra Texture' (except for 'Tired of Midnight Blue') feature keyboards by David Foster and Gary Wright.
TOP 10 SIGNS HARRISON DOESN'T MATTER : 1. Olivia now refers to George as "that guy". 2. Paul McCartney reveals HE wrote "Something". 3. Headstone reads "George Harrison, Waterboy" 4. Biggest fan: A guy in a wheelchair who is broke. 5. Dahni wishes he looked more like John Lennon. 6. Beatles now think Sutcliff was better guitar player. 7. Olvia Harrison now admits she loved Lennon. 8. George Martin admits he wrote "Gently Weeps". 9. George now on cover of Chiffon's "Greatest Hits" 10.George WHO?
ATTENTION ROOM: George Harrison's upcoming "documentary" is now in tatters! Martin Scorcesi has left the project citing "creative differences" with himself. Seems Miramax wanted a film about The Beatles and when they discovered it was one of those RE-ENACTED things they dumped Scorsesi. It has now been reduced to a ONE-HOUR segment on the History Channel with Paul Giammani playing the moody Ex-Beatle. Yoko Ono has agreed to spon- sor the film if they put in 5 minutes of her "singing"!
From the website George Harrison: Albums, Songs and Lyrics- drums:Jim Gordon/JimKeltner, bass:Carl Radle, Piano:Leon Russell. Electric Piano:Gary Wright, Organ & ARP Strings: David Foster, Sax:Jim Horn, Guitar & Vocals;George Harrison. (Only Harrison's vocal track was done in 1975.)
Leon Russell played on Extra Texture, but not this track as it was layed down prior to the ET sessions. Check out 'World of Stone' or 'Tired of Midnight Blue' if you want to hear Leon's piano on a Harrison track.
@subg88 You are correct that Leon Russell is credited for playing on those songs from the Extra Texture album. It is a fact that 'You' was recorded prior to that during the All Things Must Pass recording sessions and was intended for Ronnie Spector. The bootleg CD The Making Of All Things Must Pass includes outtakes from that album including "You", it lists Leon Russell one of the keyboard players. As he is not credited on the album it is fair to guess based on style etc., he is on this track.
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
@tatelabianca That is probably because the keyboard player is Leon Russell who arranged, played, and wrote for the Gary Lewis & The Playboys records. One of the bass players for the All Things Must Pass sessions was Carl Radle who was once a member of the Playboys
@mashtones Thank you so much for that info! as obsessed as I am with all things George, I can't believe that I never knew Leon played on this track, or that he was even associated with the Playboys! I feel like an idiot, but I really appreciate your info! interesting how that GL and the P's sound naturally shines trough here!
I like this mix without the ADT on the Fender Strat. This was originally recorded by Ronnie Spector but Phil was p/o'd about not getting invovled. George recorded over Ronnie's vocal. Too bad only a handful of people heard the real orignal version of this. One passed on, one in jail and the other is in seclusion
I love that song ...and actually in this take take, at the beginning George's voice is perfect!! ....brilliant ...the 4 Beatles were so talented that is was really miracleous that they lasted so many years in the same band ...
"Let it Roll" is the greatest hits CD that came out recently. I felt there were some strange choices about what was put on and left off of it and one was the exclusion of "You".
Oh Ok ... supposedly greatest hits mean beoing on the charts for some time, or just making it to the charts ... I don't know how commercial was that song to left out of the greatest hits. The point is we love it .... also my fav album from George was that one, Extra Texture and also Made in England ...followed by cloud nine. I believe cloud 9 was equivalent to JL's double Fantasy ...was the peak of his solo career....
Those are all good choices. Speaking of greatest hits, I heard a while back that they were planning to put out a box set of George's music. Did that get dropped?
THIS IS GREAT! George was always under-appreciated with the Beatles, but his solo career was better than the others, in my opinion. Thanks for the post!
Where can I find this?? first time I heard this I fell head over heals in love with George... I was 16 in 1987. I thought that he was HOT... I will always love him...
Oh this is wonderful!!!! I have never heard this version but I have always loved this song!!! I love alternate takes on things....and I love George and his singing.

@Jerry96587 - George died of complications from
throat cancer, "brought on by years of smoking"
according to his publicist. I'm troubled by this notion
that it's OK for a guy to preach the evils of "materialism"
while living in a 120-room mansion. He bulldozed
100s of environmentally sensitive trees building his
Hawaiian estate so there goes his environmental
message. His message might have been "positive"
but his action were not. Never mind his clunky music.
Sorry about your cancer.
