If Wunderlich had lived, I don't think some of the "great tenors" we have had over the past 40 years would have been so great, when compared to Fritz.
the first time i heard this i was driving and listening 2 our local classical music station. I had to pull the car over and stop i was so enthralled. plus it is dangerous 2 drive while crying. one of the most beautiful sounds. he could kiss my hand anytime. what a sad ending for someone with such a glorious gift.
Even without the German language.... This is the loveliest recording I have ever heard of this song. He just had such an interpretation of beautiful music. I cannot imagine.............
I have listened to numerous Wunderlich recordings.... and he just makes my heart sing! And on top of it... he is so handsome. I cannot imagine the competition between Wunderlich and other tenors of his day had he lived any longer. Such a tragedy he was taken away so early.
@cocoagirl61660 Perhaps the German language is disliked so much because GERMANS speak it. When one listens to Goethe and Schiller, however, it doesn't sound too bad. We must begin to realize that English is not the only nor the most beautiful language in the world. I could suggest more than five(I personally speak more than that) have greater esthetic value. Very few Anglo-Saxons are either bi-or-multilingual. English speaking people just wing it and belittle others. I know. I do!
@bernard1422 I do understand what you are saying... and acknowledge the tendency of English speaking persons to overlook the beauty of songs sung in other languages. But I know this is his his native language... and having sung in English, Italian and French myself..... I still find him and his German accent stunning!
@philipvanlidth Tauber did not have the beauty of voice this man did. Talent yes.... voice equal to that of Wunderlich NO... But then, few tenors born do...
@cocoagirl61660 Agreed, but then, I never said he had as beautiful a voice, merely that he was Wunderlich's predecessor as a German tenor who covered both classical and popular genres...
Tx for posting; didn't know that one of my favorite German tenors could sing in a "popular" frame, really thought of him as my "lieder" tenor, so this is not only a surprise recording but one I'd like to have (where are there others?).
I am just soooo happy to hear Fritz Wunderlich's songs! I am so thankfull for you to post them here on Youtube. God bless you and provide you with everything your heart desires.
He didn't sing this in 'full' voice, which is even better for effect. Plus not a big fan of chesty sounds unless it is required. This kind of soft lyrical singing is most beautiful when a voice like WUnderlich's sings it...very warm voice and sweet like honey. Fuller than di Stefano's and just as beautiful, would have been the leading lyric tenor of the second half of the century no doubt. Pavarotti and other of his contemporaries were great but doesn't hold a candle to him.
Everything he did was terrific and the voice was warmer then gedda, bjorling and pavoratti I am not saying better as an artist after all he was dead by age 36 but he was becoming a great Italian tenor then, singing in Italian and the voice probably would never be a big spinto but as a lyric he would have been as great as any of them IMO of course ( and maybe greater) later he would sing spinto roles like Jussi did and in Italian as needed he was learning Italian and recording some but died
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY SUNG SONGS EVER, HE OWNS IT, TAUBER CAN'T COMPETE..NOR ANYONE ELSE!...HOW VERY SAD HE DIED SO YOUNG...
gpcolucci 6 days ago
I will say it till the day I die.... Though not well known.... He is the greatest Tenor that ever sung...........

Usually German is not that beautiful a language in which Tenors choose to sing. Mr. Wunderlich is the exception. This is absolutely lovely.

@cocoagirl61660 Richard Tauber was his predecessor, even composed some songs of his own that he made very famous in recordings, all in German...
