So ironic that after just a matter of days of HastingsCouncil taking the pier back over it somehow gets burnt to the pillers it stands on. Sadly the Pier had it coming. Years ago when the Council wanted to alter the layout of the town centre there was an old clocktower in the way. Overnight an arson attack took place. I bet the Council are rubbing their hands together!

@cattatra The major part of the fire is out. When I left there about 45min ago there were a few little fires towards the front of it. The Ballroom is totally gone - there is just a gaping maw where that bit used to be. Towards the front, were the cafe used to be, all the walls have caved in. It's smoking like hell so you can't really see it clearly from the Ice rink but if you check it out from Bottle Alley, you can see it all - it's ruined. None of the supports have fallen into the sea though.

This is terribly sad, so many childhood memories down to today. What a loss to the town, the Pier should never have been closed with the loss of all those businesses and the interest a Pier attracts. Hope the culprits, apprehended, will be dealt with severely. Let us hope like the Phoenix, the Pier can be restored from the ruins, to give everyone something good to celebrate. This is a sad day.

The probability of this event occurring was obviously extremely high given the closure and its derelict state. It is Hastings Town Council that should accept full responsibility for the loss. Any representative of the fire services will probably tell you 'it was predictable but there was nothing we could do'! The fact that arrests may have been made is irrelevant. Rather than dable in commercial business builds such as office sq/ft rent, tourism should be its first priority. Shame on you!!

The evidence now is that they failed to do this. They are therefore guilty of 'dereliction of duty'. The leader should stand charge but first someone needs to make this complaint to the police!
