  • Apparently, the amount of levels the original Pacman has (For the NES) is a closely guarded secret, can someone tell me how far one can get on this game? without cheating...

  • my dogs name is inky

  • se como solucionarlo solo imaginate el laberinto con la pantallam buena

  • WOW!! you beat the last level of pac-man! and some people say it's unsurpassable. anyone remember that reward for beating this level back in 1999? you just won $100,000! go to billy mitchel and show him this video. you deserve it.

  • Why are the ghosts not going after you?

  • teach me yhur ways of completion

  • not real becuz in the arcade game, the numbers go all the way down to the bottom and there is no fruit and thats another video becuz how could u play when there is a camera in front of the camera

  • Ok now im going to watch censored cartoons

  • @lucas66568 - Nope. A standard (i.e., non split screen) Pac-Man board has exactly 244 dots (240 small dots and 4 energizers), and even on the split screen, the game code is checking for 244 dots to be eaten as the trigger to progress to the next level. Since the split screen doesn't have nearly that many dots (114 dots on the left half; 9 on the right), you can't get any further.

  • after you beat this did you get the undroppable quarter

  • the orange it's impossible to trap because he is chasing you lesser than other ghosts

  • that is level 0 because after you finished level 255 it will roll over to zero and this is how it looks like!

  • Damn ghosts... THEY DIVIDED BY ZERO

  • I never got why it did this

  • @Nerflover787 It's all based on the 8bit chip that Pacman ran on- here is video explaning the binary code behind it and why 256 doesn't work...

    /watch?v=umYvFdU54Po

    enjoy! :D

  • So we meet again 240p

  • It would be terrific if those original Pac Man programmers fixed that final stage split screen to a full maze like in stages 1 to 255, then when the last maze stage is cleared, the game is over.

  • @Sharptooth100 lol too bad back then programmers just wanted money and didnt care about the ppl who played it. well they did... just didnt expect ppl to beat the whole thing

  • If you manage to beat the level by some luck,it will just go to the level 1 screen but the power pellets will have no effect and the difficulty is still really hard.

  • thumbs up if the description of the roblox gift got you here

  • @mickysaaz1 Oh good, I'm not the only one...(:

  • did pacman eat a key?

  • anyone come here cuz of ready player 1?

  • how did you get up to that level? OMG

  • LMAO @ 1:21

  • Thanks for making this clearer! i read online that this stage was unbeatable.. but there IS a way! thumbs up to the video!

  • props never knew there was a last level

  • That is awesome. -bows-

    Grats on getting that far.

  • can u plz put a vid of all the original cutscenes like the one after you beat level 3 (when the ghost is chasing u but then pacman gets bigger and gets back at the ghost) ive only gotten past the first two cutscenes

  • haha when i was a kid i tap the code to level 256 and i didn't know what i do lolXD

  • @LyricAndOctavia How do you make that backwards b? lol

  • @jameypittman You feed the dog, thats a nice thing to do, but is it the right one? I guess it is, or else the dog dies.

Ignoring is the worst thing a human can do to someone.

  • for once the player LITERRALY beat the game

  • thats crazy!!!!

  • hiw the fuck did you manage to go to level 256=~? i cant pass level 2

  • @PivotMakeranimations HA HA HA im 12 i got to the 50th stage!

  • @mrshanegt how?i can't get past level 9

  • @lucas66568 Some how i was playing in a arcade and i had about 40 coins and i kept on passing because i was really good

  • @mrshanegt how many lives there was? mine 5 and i can get until level 9 with a game

  • @lucas66568 3X40 = 120 Trys i had

  • @mrshanegt mine i had 5 lives

  • you know if you can find a way to beat this stage billy mitchel has put a $100,000 bounty out and if you can prove it to him he will pay you

  • what happens if you beat it?

  • WAs that an algo or just random game play?

  • Level 3 was my best :D

  • w.e it is respect to anyone who got to this level in pacman

  • Pacman, the most epic Circle EVER

  • so basically when you finish that level, nothing happens? wow that must mean that when you finish it your stuck there forever!

  • But, even if you do it all the way, you can't finish the level, right?

  • @jameypittman

youre a hero ! how did you get that far :O:O?????

but there is one thing i was wondering about. why does it say you have only 12600 points in the beginning ?

  • @raphiey - Because Pac-Man arcade machines have a rack advance switch inside the machine that allow you to skip ahead levels. That way I didn't have to play the game for hours and hours just to make a demonstration video for dealing with the split screen. That's why the score is so low.

  • Comment removed

  • @jameypittman yes

  • Comment removed

  • @raphiey he warped with MAME to level 255 and passed it.

and here's how he got 12600he got 2600 points for the dots (2400 for normal ones, 200 for the big ones) then 10000 for keys (1st 5000 2nd 5000 total 10000) total 12600

  • @lucas66568 - Yes, exactly. The MAME emulates the original arcade Pac-Man so perfectly, it even includes the rack advance switch. This video is not meant to be anything but a demonstration of how to trap 3 ghosts on the split screen (i.e., the score is meaningless).

  • Comment removed

  • @jameypittman but the version MAME 32 0.35 (the one i own) doesn't even have it. why?

  • @lucas66568 - That's a really old version of MAME. Go download a newer version. Problem solved.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh my God, Pac Man hit by the Millennium Bug

  • What's the point of the game if it's like that

  • @TheT1231995 I think I am right in saying, the devs never thought anybody would get that far.

I mean level 256 is A LOT of levels and this was a really hard at the time, so they probably just made a load then got half way through this and thought "wait, nobody will get this far. Lets just release it". That would be my guess anyway.

  • Pac-man can see the matrix. He is the one...

  • 0:10 Pokey goes crazy ;) .

  • The reason why this happens is because there is a byte to store the level number.

  • Kill screen

  • 0:11 yellow ghost: YOU SPINNIN MA HEAD RIGHT ROUND RIGHT ROUND lol

  • how did u do that

  • @msemmapeel The 256th level of Pac Man is a Kill Screen, so you can't go any further in the game.

  • UT Announcer: Kill Screen!

  • @MegaSmurf9 - Oh I'm definitely a nerd in terms of classic arcade games, so even I will give a thumbs up for that. One might argue that upside-down text is fairly nerdy also! Additionally, if you want to call people names, at least have the balls to do it right-side up! :)

  • i think the game makers thought nobody would ever beat the game so they got lazy on the last levels and kept those fucked up Pixels on the right side of the screen lol

  • I had error of this video xD "Error , Try Later."

  • Very cool! I've been meaning to look this up for a while :D

  • The reason that Pac Man goes bonkers at level 256 is probably because the variable that stores the level number is only 2 bytes long and the largest number you can store in 2 bytes is 255 which would equal FF in hexadecimal. The number 256 in hexadecimal is 100, which is too large for a 2 byte variable thus resulting in the game going straight down the toilet from that point onward.

  • @awhitsel that number FF is one byte, max for two bytes would be FFFF which is 65535

  • they did this cause they thought nobody could get to that level.

  • @JustCallMeAndreW No, 255 is the largest number the level counter can take because it's only 1 byte. They meant for it to be unlimited.

  • What happens when you win? Is their a video or something? whats in the video

  • the power pellets have no use?!?

  • its not level 256 its a game bug look at the high score

  • @Wo5h it's because everytime you make a million the score rolls over to zero

  • 256 BEGIN

    Pac-Man: Shoot.

  • You can do the glitch... But good luck getting to level 256..... And if you manage to actually get there than get a life.

  • @SUPERBLORP thats nothing have to do with "get a live" .. More the guys that playes games all day long without an pause.. or talk to friends... (( Online on chat dont count )) havent no live. ^^ Iam really good on DoA 2.. and nobody can beat me get to the highest lvl and make it with easy.. But have much friends n stuff. :D And this game arent that hard dude. ^^ (pacman)

  • @SUPERBLORP

Every level has a pattern, getting to this level isn't hard at all if you can memorize the patterns or have a friend that sits next to you and tells you the upcoming direction to take. Just because someone is really good at a video game does not mean they have no life, grow up and get a life of your own, is there really a purpose to going on youtube videos looking for something and then complaining that you found it?

  • kiwininja100, How do you do that?

  • ಠ_ಠ

  • the blue one isn't stuck, he's doubled up with the red one!

  • @joshanator1 Which makes him stuck, 'cause along with the red and pink the blue one is going the same path on the right and won't get out of there ;)

  • in theory if someone was possible to beat level 256 then the game would go to level 1 settings with the faster ghosts and immune to the power ups and restart the game levels meaning who ever beats level 256( which is likely impossible) they would get the original plan for the game never ending

  • Why did Pac-Man have to divide by zero? WHY?!

  • 1:07 did pac-man just eat a key?

  • @pokegamer123 yup

  • *points finger* HAX!!!!!!

  • its pac man on drugs XD

  • This is what happens when you divide by 0.

  • HAX!

  • The ghosts traveling to the bottom of the screen over and over again reminds me of The Matrix. Might be kind of cool to do a Matrix parody mash-up with Pac-Man as Neo, Ms. Pac-Man as Trinity, change the power pills to red, Agent Smith would definitely be Speedy. Might be kind of funny.

  • I got to say: Thank you SO much for making the pac-man dossier! It is the most incredible thing I've ever read, and it got me into to how the programming of old games work. I completely understand the inner workings of this game now.

Jamey, you and Don Hodges are awesome.

  • @nintendork64 - That is very kind of you to say - thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the dossier! :)

  • @nintendork64 do you know to start with more lives instead of 3? thanks

  • @CarlosBugeja I don't think you can... Unless I'm forgetting something.

  • @nintendork64 - actually there's a dipswitch in the arcade machine that toggles between starting with either 3 or 5 lives.

  • at the end of the game it shows your final highscore then returns to the very first level again. except the ghosts are still faster and you have your diffrent assortment of fruits and things.

  • and that was the final level? now the game is end? :/

  • this i so messed up...

  • hello

  • ram okay

    rom not okay

  • Great piece of old game trivia! It would be even more interesting to upload a video of maybe the last two levels before you get here so we can see what it looks like at that level too! Thanks.

  • it just look like y broke the screen

  • What is it?

  • pacman must of took the red pill

  • level 255 - waka waka waka waka waka waka waka (pacman nom noise)

Level 256 - waka waka waka waka waka wat the fuck??

  • OOOOOOK!

  • Some f----t copied your video.

  • This sucks, I played Namco's Museum hoping to get to level 256 so I can play the pac-man glitch, but Namco doesn't have the glitch anymore. After I made it to 256 the game starts over. What a waste of time!

  • @Jellofreeze WHAT! shouldn't pacman have 300 rounds? so you can acheive the perfect score? (3,000,000,000)

  • chuck norris can beat this game in 10 seconds

  • @XDivideBy0 he can do anything

  • @XDivideBy0 Chuck Norris decides how long 10 seconds is...

  • @ChrisLQ you are right, i have seen many games with a level cap of 255 even with hacks and glitches, including Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3

  • This question is silly but does it ACTULLY do that if you get to level 256? and if it does, how did you ever survive that FAR?!

  • It's the GLITCH GREMLIN!

  • @BionicleKid97 Keep the q-tip away. Keep it away.

  • talking about glitches..

  • Pointless

  • Well, it's not the programmers fault... the players are so good they broke the game!

  • OMG it's the matrix :O

  • It was rumored that this 8 year old kid got PAST the split screen and got the highest score in the world. This was such an event that even the PRESIDENT Ronald Reagan sent him a letter of congratulations! Or so it has been said.

  • ZALGO

  • why is the right side of the screen like that

  • @vicvicvic135

it has something to do with those cutscenes you get every four levels with some little animation of pacmen pwning ghosts, anyhow however it adds up theres a level and a cutscene at the same time and the codes mess up each other hence you get a screwed up level, I think only the original arcade version has this though

  • @Musician992 It's because a 1-byte (8-bit) variable can only represent the numbers from 0 to 255 (or -128 to +127). Since the variable starts at 1 to represent level 1, you get 255 levels, then the variable loops to zero, and the game erroneosly attempts to draw 256 fruits.

  • Damn hexadecimals.

  • Comment removed

  • wonder what developer of pac-man has to sat about his lv256 glitch... on purpose? not? proud of it? ashamed? doesn't care?

  • @FOXstreet1 - Oh for pete's sake: the point was to DEMONSTRATE how to trick the ghosts over to the side of the screen. NOT to play the game all the way to this level legitimately (because that would take many hours - I have better things to do with my time). There's a little switch inside the arcade machine called a "rack test" switch that allows operators to skip ahead levels which is exactly what I did. The point was to show how to deal with the ghosts - not to show off a high score.

  • @jameypittman

    tee-hee...you said "pete's sake"

  • @FOXstreet1

The level is figgin unbeatable, andd GLITCHY. >:(

  • @FOXstreet1 tonto weon jaja pao culiao xD

  • This is probably a stupid question but I'm curious. On the Xbox 360 arcade you can download pacman to play. Would the same thing happen on there too?

  • @xixRASBERRYxix - Not unless the Xbox 360 developers chose to be VERY faithful to the original and intentionally put in what is a glitch from the arcade. Guess you'll have to play 256 levels to find out! ;-)

  • @jameypittman

They were faithful to the original I believe. Although it's WAY harder to play with a 360 controller thumbstick than an old arcade joystick. I miss the 4 distinct directions.

  • @xixRASBERRYxix I doubt it, as Dig Dug's similar kill-screen error was fixed.

  • ive gotten to level 21 without memorizing the ghost pattern

  • why does it go like that all glichy on the right hand side? its wierd...

  • @oinkbiscuit

It goes all glitchy on the right side because 256 in hex is 100, but there was only coding for fruit to be 2 digits in hex, i.e. FF being the highest fruit number available to display (not number of fruit, but numbered piece of fruit, and previous 5). So when it tries to load level 256, it attempts to load 100 pictures of fruit, which is why only the side where the fruit goes glitches.

  • @beundead , in other words it is trying to display too many fruit right?

  • @crazyjak56

Yeah, that's probably a much better summary than my circuitous attempt at explaining :P.

  • @oinkbiscuit It's hard to explain, here is my attempt.

  • @oinkbiscuit The level counter is stored in 8 bit meaning 255 is the most levels it can count. When one beats 255 the counter wraps to 0, this creates garbage output in a routine in the game, a routine is a function that is used over and over. One routine counts how many fruits are on the screen. When the level counter wraps to 0, the game tries to put 256 fruits on screen. (Represented by the random numbers as hexadecimal code) it starts on the bottom, and up the right side of the screen.

  • i bet they put the bug there on purpose because they didnt want anyone to beat pac man! lolz jk

  • Oh wow it glitched real good. Nice to see you get so far in the game.

  • if you see good, you can see the blue ghost and the red ghost are toguether but the red is afront of the blue, and for that we can see the blue

  • Do you have to like memorize ghost patterns to go beyond level 10? I just play it randomly, like not paying attention, and I never got past level 13.

  • @CzechRiot - Good question. You can indeed memorize several patterns to get you through the levels (many people do this). As long as you pull off the pattern perfectly, they will work every time and the ghosts won't get you. This works because ghost behavior is deterministic and not random (although it is designed to seem so).

  • @CzechRiot not ass bad as me i havent got past level 2

  • lol he glitched it.

  • @SystemofaJake1 dumbass

  • umm people look at the high score stupids

  • @pigeater25 - Um, realize the name of this video isn't "High Score In Pac-Man". It was merely to demonstrate how the 256th level behaves and how to "trap" 3 of the 4 ghosts on the edge of the screen. If you own the arcade machine, you have what is called a "rack test" switch inside the machine you can press to skip ahead levels which is what I did.

  • you're a fuckin badass ninja!!!!! i can't even go to level 2!!!

  • Awsome memories

  • So even if you do remove the visible dots, there still is not a 'next' level.. hrm interesting.. as a computer programmer i love how the byte that held the value is limited to 2^8 (256) 0-255.. pretty cool though.. just some programmer i guess never figured many would make it to a level that high i guess they under estimated gamers haha..

  • MissingNo appeared.

  • Looks like Pac-Man's been smoking some bad granola.

  • so pacman is basicially 100% impossible to beat?

  • i wonder what the Atari 2600 did at level 256...

Caused the Video Game Crash of 1983...

  • @johnathon124 - Indeed it did. I can still remember that Christmas when the 2600 version of Pac-Man came out and every kid in my neighborhood was royally pissed at how bad in stank. But Pac-Man didn't cause the crash all by itself but it definitely was a major contributing factor. Atari's "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial" cartridge did just as much if not more damage. Why do I get the feeling I'm much older than you? LOL!

  • @jameypittman i know it didnt cause it, but it was a main cause... And you are probably much older than me. i do know these classic games very well, but i didnt actually live through them.. i was born in 96, and as a child, i played mostly the Sega Genesis and later, the first Playstation. i loved all the games released for it, especially Crash Bandicoot games [ which i still play now, since the current ones have transformed into some hot mess ... ]

  • @johnathon124 - I was born in '73 so, when I was a little kid, we had one game: Pong. :)

  • @jameypittman and i remember all the Genesis games i played as a little kid too.. the Sonic games, those games on the 5 in 1 cartridge, that Wheel of Fortune Game ( which was rather creepy, it had a dark look, no sound, and it allowed all players to be an api player... )

And i remember Namco museum games for the PS1... With emulation i can still play all those games, especially since the PSP has POPS, a built in PSX emulator.. Classics were always the best imo...

  • soooo you beat it? if you did that before january 2000 you could have won 100,000 dollars lol.
