  • one experience I had. Was packing tiedowns and stepped on the lower hatch. The hinges let go and I fell to the ground. I thanked God it didn't happen 30 minutes sooner when we were at 10,000 feet. The next day all the hatchs had a red stripe around them and big letters; DO NOT STEP. The base paper at Donaldson had a article about my adventure. Said I had "inadvertently" stepped on the hatch and it broke. I think that was the first time I had seen the word, inadvertently.

  • I was a loadmaster on C124 from Dec52 to Dec 54. Stationed at Tachi, Larson and Donaldson AFB. Can still remember the sound at landing. Enjoyed your video of the flight of the last flying 124.

  • I was stationed at Tachikawa AB, Japan, back in the early 60s, when the C-124 was THE premier cargo carrier. Slow and shakey. Thus their nickname. It was the only plane flying that could be above a solid cloud cover, and you could identify the plane solely by its engine noise (which this video doesn't do justice). Hard to think they're all gone now, when they used to be so common. Nice to see one flying again. (Did they replace the wing spars? That's what grounded them all!)

  • I FLEW ON ONE OF THESE FROM JAPAN TO DANANG IN 1966.I DON"T REMEMBER TO MUCH ABOUT THE FLIGHT EXCEPT FOR THE BOX LUNCH.THATS WHAT YOU GET ON COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS NOW ADAYS.

  • Wow, thank you for posting this. This the very first time I see and hear a C-124 in action. At Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX, C-124's were used by the 433rd Airlift wing. By 1972, the Air Force phased them out. I was only two years old and never had a chance to see and hear one. Thanks again....

  • yup... thx for posting this... great video...

  • To gdholmfirth.

Thanks for filling in that gap in my knowledge! Very kind of you.

  • I took a pic of that plane in the air leaving Dobbins in 1984 look at my 80s pics i can't link it here but you can look at my channel profile and get there.

  • it's such a waste that something so beautiful woild be placed in a museum never to fly again. How tragic!

  • @hoss73ford1 Better that than risk total loss of the airframe in an accident. The legacy aircraft dwindle.

  • beautiful video, can't thank you enough for posting. Made my eyes water a little seeing that nose gear come off the ground.

  • Good shootin' Poppy!

  • Did they ferry it with the gear down?

  • I LOVE THIS BIRD! In June -61, I and other Swedish soldiers were carried back to Sweden from Katanga. We flew with MATS C124 30046. Over the Tshad Lake, the aircraft was hit by 2 colliding thunderstorms. During 20 minutes, the old bird was, as the pilots told us afterwards, completely "out of hands" for them. They couldn`t do anything, just follow the bird, who finaly defeated the storms. Fell from 9000 to 3000 ft - falling speed 5400 ft/m. then she brought us safe to Wheelus . I LOVE THIS BIRD.

  • @ranemson1 I know the feeling. I was in more than one storm in one of these birds and it was quite unnerving each time.

  • Thanks for the terrific vid, paralleler. The last time I saw a C124 was at Davis-Monthan back in 1973. Great to see this huge and distinctive sounding old bird in the air again!

  • I so remember these as a kid when I lived in South Wales. They would make their most distinctive noise overhead as they headed westward towards the Atlantic and the USA.

You have brought incredible memories back - thank you!!

  • @fokkerwokker After flying over Wales it was on to the Azores for gas and a nap. Next morning we would head for Dover AFB.

  • I was growing up 5 yrs. old in Long Beach on Park Crest St. Sitting out in the front of our little house which was very close to the airport. I used to see the brand new shinny ones roaring overhead. The shadow covered the whole house. It really got me interested in flying, of which I've made a 35 year career. Great stuff!

  • Great video. My father has logged thousands of hours (literally) in the 124, and finding this video meant a lot to both of us.

  • They need to try and get an Old Shaky flying again and at least ONE C-133. In case you wonder the 116th from Georgia used to fly the C-124 so some GA ANG personnel were versed in the old bird.

  • What a plane. I remember the C-124s at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, SC. I was 7 years when they closed the air base.

  • What memeries whin i was a teenager in the 60s i usded 2 go out 2 the airport allot after school i watched the differant aircraft do T and Gs all day 707s 720s DC-8s ,9s 1 day i wsa out there aq 707, 727,DC-8 was in the pattern whin i saw a convoy of military trucks jeeps and soldgers about a hour or so i saw a C-124 on final thin another 1 they landed and taxied right by me the pilot waved 2 me and i waved back thin they started up taxied by and took off thanks 4 the memeries.

  • When I was a kid about 12 years old in the early 60's. my father was the maintenance NCO of a Recovery Squadron at RDU, N.C. Earlier he was an engineer gunner on B25s in the Pacific during WWII and was a line chief on 29's at Randolph field during Korea. I went to weekend drills with him and they would train on aircraft that were flown in. I had a lot of fun (and learned a great deal) by running around in the airplanes. I recall fondly being on the flight deck during runups.

  • Thank you for the great video presentation!!!

I grew up in the 1980's with a C-124 Globemaster II at the former home of the Commemerative Air Force (A.K.A. Confederate Air Force) in Harlingen, Texas. I spent many hours in the cockpit of "Old Shakey" imagining what it must have been like to fly such a magnificent bird. I was saddened the day that C-5 aircraft and crew loaded up "Old Shakey" in parts and flew her to her new home (I believe on the east coast.

  • what an amazing video Bruce! Great find.
