can anyone help me find the FREE newest, most efficient os, with the fastest chop feature w/the zero crossings, and arppeg? maybe the OS2XL. I've looked and found a few downloads, but they need passwords to work. please help, this akai OS is too slow!
i have an mpc2000xl, thinking about getting rid of it for the 1000 w jj os, i'm pretty sure thats what i'm going to do, i only have one question, ive read the one of the cons of the mpc1000 (and something quite important) is that slicing a sample converts it into mono, is this still true with the jj os?
it wouldn't be the wheel itself which would be reliable/unreliable, it'd be the rotary encoder underneath. i use the same rotary encoder, just a different data wheel (taken from an old stereo). eventually i want to find a more durable, undetented rotary encoder, as the current one in the mpc1000 goes bad after enough use (i've been through two since 2004)
don't worry, this above all things shouldn't keep you from getting an mpc. read about the pad replacement ordeal - if anything, THAT'S what you should be thinking about. also, don't buy a new mpc - buy a 2nd hand 1000 from craigslist or ebay.
akai as a company doesn't deserve your business, so buy used.
if you only use 1 sample per kick, 1 sample per snare, and 1 sample per hi hat, your drum track will sound flat. you take multiple hits and use velocity switching/simult velocity level "blurring" to make a drum sound that evolves depending on force of hit. i typically take at least 3 samples of each drum sound, plus eventual layering/simulting with others of the same catagory.
hey Nym, good lookin out with these videos, a big help. i'm wondering, with this sample in particular... would you have created a new program, and kept the sounds, or grabbed the ones you wanted and made a program out of them manually? also, do you prefer a certain release time as a rule of thumb, and/or put them all in the same mute group?
i'd have used one of my blank preset programs after chopping. i'd first start by selecing as many good kicks, then hats, then then then...etc. it's a manual process. RELEASE always = 0, i prefer to set my own release using alternate looping and RELEASE in ADSR.
alright mate any chance you can do a vid on mixing using the 4 outs? is it possible to layer up drums and have a total of 6 seperate tracks goin out ie 4 outs paned left n right and the master outs panned left n right and whats the best or easyest way to set this up and save it as a drum patern. cheers fella
yes, it's completely possible to track 6 objects at a time, no panning needed in JJ os. easiest way to set it up is in GPE's OUT/FX page, either by pad or by track. w/ drums it'll be by pad, with inst pgms and chopped sample tracks it'll be by track.
Thanks so much Nym! With this video, I was finally able to get a chopping method that I am comfortable with. Keep them coming. Also, what the heck did you do to your 1k? I like the looks of it, and did you make that jog wheel? If so, how?
Damn! Unless you just aren't tryna give up the game, You gotta explain that a bit more. I could barely see what U were doing or go slower 4 us mere humans! Lol, I wanna know how U zoom in and out so dern fast...
thamizphit, bug hunting is going great. jj's done tons of work debugging os2 from the early version i previewed in december. often, when i report a bug, he already knows about it. these are "incompletions." other times, i'll report a bug that he has not seen yet.
my most thorough debugging is in midi grid edit mode, where i do all my sequencing. i've reported other bugs as well, but most of my work is done in mge
good question synthburn. in this case, with a transient-heavy drum loop, i could have done that. however, it would have definitely missed the very quiet hat and would have definitely needed each and every start/end point edited. since i chop this way every time (esp w/ non-transient samples like strings) it's just a faster routine. by dividing and chopping, you're actually editing future start/end points at the same time as you're editing the current one.
I switched to JJOS 1 4.99L, and I'm eager to step up to JJOS 2XL once have the money.

JJOS chops stereo to stereo.
AkaiOS chops stereo to mono.
JJOS = essential, for a multitude of reasons.

super waste of time...
@2009 it should be done with hidden marco for creating the slicing points...

first do a quick auto-slice and then add more markers for sounds that weren't indicated by the auto-slicer
+ make some special adjustments here and there...
but you should start with an auto-slicer as it is x20 faster...

Where did you get that jog wheel? It sounds really good as you spin it.

Thats a rough looking machine, son....meaning all the detailing look like you tried to wipe it off.

lol wtf, get yourself a jj os password, you gotta pay 50 bucks for the jj os 1 and another 50 bucks for the second.
and even if someone would like to give you his password, it wouldnt work. every mpc has its own ID matching with password.

2000xl is famous for having the best data wheel.

this is why the drums on Beatnuts' "Hydra Beats" sound nowhere near as real as some contemporaries
