it is wrong for guys to act like that when they are dating somone already. daria is totally self centered, and tom is a total creep. he had no regard for how he treated jane. he was totally casual about all of it and in the end he will get what he wants. it's like she's getting a pass, just because she's mopey, but if quinn did it quinn would be called a backstabber right away.

Daria wasn't being self-centered. She was just talking to a guy. How is it her fault that friendly conversation made her bf's guy 'fall' for her? Her first crush was Trent and then that Ted guy to some extent. I don't think she knew she felt anything for Tom (notice the T theme) until the kiss.

I have to agree with you about Tom, though. He was as cool as a cucumber about the whole thing.

I agree with you, Nakabe125. In fact, this was the first episode I ever saw on this show. Although it was "Is It Fall Yet?" which got me hooked onto Daria, since I saw this one right before IIFY?, I think this episode also played a role in hooking me onto Daria.

The story/script is awesome; they pack so much in and do everything so well (like music choice), that when it's over you're like, "wait, this was only a half-hour show?"

"Dye! Dye! My Darling!" was the very first Daria episode I ever watched. And what an episode for my first one of a generally great series! Tom certainly shouldn't have kissed Daria -- even if it was most likely impulsive.

And Daria shouldn't have kissed Tom back -- although I suspect that Daria was attracted to him (even if she didn't want to admit it) and teenage hormones probably played a role as well.

But Tom was right -- he and Jane should've broken up before this!

Everyone is saying that Jane is a bitch in this episode, but she knew that something was going on between Daria and Tom. She was right to feel paranoid and insecure; anyone would feel this way if they could sense a betrayal on their hands. It's just that Jane had the guts to confront the two of them (separately) instead of being sneaky and vindictive.

I hate to admit it but statistics don't lie... Couples only ever have the BIG blowouts about money or sex, and most charts will tell you that men are ten times more likely than women to commit murder. You do the math. Not to suggest women CAN'T be aggressive or are physiologically prone to be perpetual victims, they just lean towards showing it in a less physical manner. Tom is such an azz. 1:35 he doesn't even look the slight bit concerned that he cheated on his girlfriend with her best friend. In fact he looks happy. 3:18 he is all chipper and crap when Jane comes over. I bet he wouldn't have even told her about it if it wasn't for Daria. This whole thing was messed up. I went into shock when I saw this episode. At first my reaction was "....OMG Daria kissed a guy! Yay!" Then "...oh crap Jane.."

I agree, Daria isn't a back stabber at all. It was a mistake and she openly admitted to Jane about it. That takes guts to tell your friend you kissed their boyfriend, and it shows how much you do care for your friendship. This show is amazing when you learn real life lessons.

It was like watching 90210, not Daria, I think the whole kiss thing was totally out of character. the kiss like everything else was forced. daria seems to be the kind of character that doesnt seek out comfort or take risks. she even tries to go back to the ways things were with no success by admitting to the kiss. she wants nothing more than to be friends with jane thats why i think thats why she *spoiler* leaves tom that relationship was always her second choice and never progressed she seems to put more effort into getting jane back.
