There is no law or rule that says my table should have pen engravings (and what those engravings say), a coffee mug stain in the top right hand corner and a piece of gum stuck underneath its top. So it becomes the case that the enormous task of modelling the world is merely replaced be the equally enormous task of designing rule sets for it.
By the way, I was not angry in my previous comments. Enthusiasm through the use of caps is not always translated well over the internet.

Having said that, the point I was trying to make was that while games may reach the heights of films like Avatar or Beowulf, there is always the sensation that something isn’t quite right, or something is missing. Because there is. And to this point games will arrive at a place where they look “real enough”. Beyond that point we would be playing a fools game. Trying to recreate the real world in its infinite detail and complexity is too big a task.
And even if we develop hardware that could replicate reality (impossible) we are still limited by our own artistic abilities. It would take ten years to model my tiny backyard in all its detail, and even then it would be a poor excuse for reality.
And to the people who point to Avatar... well, no one ever mistook Avatar for real life. Not once did I ever think it was shot with 32mm film. It looks all pretty and shiny and spectacular - but it’s no replacement for real life. Not even close.

@nexus1g Random generation can only get you so far, as there are way too many variables and materials at play here. Physics is a little different because it is subject to constant and rigid laws (art, visuals, and artificial intelligence are most certainly not). And here is the catch - you still have to apply attributes to every object/substance in the game in order for them to behave correctly. And these attributes are skeletons of their real world counterparts.

ALL art, from day 1, tried to emulate real-life. Until painters became "good" and computers became fast enough and people started creating sci-fi/fantasy images and paintings, all art emulated real-life.
All sci-fi/fantasy art also keeps things very close to what things look like in real-life as well, so people can recognize a plant from a character and so on.
s.t.a.l.k.e.r clear sky uses some effects such as the shadows which are exactly the same as real life shadows, lightning is also made exactly as it is too, same with water on surfaces, the small things
I know you're agreeing with me, but I just want to point out that STALKER does not have shadows or lighting which are exactly like the ones in real-life. Real-life shadows are not shadow maps, they're not pixelated, they're not limited by a map resolution, etc.
Light also bounces around and scatters in real-life, where as in STALKER it is just simulated at a very basic level (fake sud-surface scattering and simple ambient occlusion to fake light bouncing). Water is also not interactive.
I think what he was trying to say is that no matter how good the emulation is, and no matter how many cool effects they add, real life is always more sublime.

I think so too. :) I love computer graphics, I've spent over a decade making them and learning more and more about them, but real-life is just infinitely complex.
Even if you could make something look perfectly realistic, it still wouldn't behave perfectly realistic...and then there's space or, if you zoom in, cells, atoms, etc. The more we learn and see, the more we realize there's a ton more to see and learn.

well, although the newer games today are focused heavily on graphics and don't get me wrong they are becoming amazing, but even some games as simply as tetris can still provide some good fun. sure, it's a hell of a lot more limited with a few blocks than an entire "world" in a game, but it proves that you don't necisserily need a game to be perfect for it to be fun. i enjoy games like spyro / crash bandicoot more on ps1 than on ps2 or ps3.. it's just about the simplicity and the gameplay

well, although the newer games today are focused heavily on graphics and don't get me wrong they are becoming amazing, but even some games as simply as tetris can still provide some good fun. sure, it's a hell of a lot more limited with a few blocks than an entire "world" in a game, but it proves that you don't necisserily need a game to be perfect for it to be fun. i enjoy games like spyro / crash bandicoot more on ps1 than on ps2 or ps3.. it's just about the simplicity and the gameplay

this is bullshit. already in movies they can produce photorealistic scenes // and videogames are about 15 years behind where movies are (graphics wise.) so in 15 years we will have photorealistic games. and in 40+ you will have better looking games than walking outside.

@underu2000 if thats the case then explain away the gta series, or any sandbox game that attempt to mimic life in a city/world/environment .. there is a constant battle to improve the "realism" of games albiet graphically or with the content. what they do though is add the fantasy element to it.. infamous for instance lets you be a super hero/villian or gta again.. unless you are part of a criminal fraternity your not likely to steal a car and run down drug dealers or handle an ak47 ..

@underu2000 I think he was taking the perspective that games on average are becoming more realistic - becoming 3d, incorporating physics, dynamics, better illumination models, etc. But I think you are right that game makers are not necessarily trying to simulate reality in the same way that movies are -its just not the goal (I believe "emulate" is too strong a term in place of 'simulate' here, to emulate reality would be trying to recreate an equal reality-atoms and all)

What an idiotic video. Games are just that, games. Because technology is improving, so are graphics, and games seem more realistic as a result. But do not think for a second a game developer is trying to emulate real life. Games are meant for entertainment. Game developers know that, and gamers also know that. So there.
