I hve similar rattling noise on cold start up from my 07 (2ZR FE)corolla engine. Toyota service center say they need to replace camshaft gear assy, tensioner, chain damper, timing chain, guides and VVTi assys over 14hrs worth of work with engine out. Another toyota service say replacing the VVTi controller will solve the issue. I am confused n would like to know what would actually be the best remedy for the rattling noise. The noise is only for 1-2 sec during cold start up.
@RAJSTA81 In my case the repair bill was only the new cam gear itself as I do all my automotive work. For the 2ZZ-GE the cam gear is around $120. No idea how much it is for the 2GR.
The noise doesn't ordinarily damage the engine. In your case I'd make sure it is coming from the VVT-i gear though, could also be other type of noises such as rod bearings. Those will damage the engine.
In my other video what I do is pull the connector to the oil control valve while the engine is idling. If the noise stays the same then it's not the cam gear.

How did you repair the noise?????
carlistillu 2 weeks ago
@carlistillu By replacing the VVT-i cam gear. That's the only way to repair the noise.

other than making noise, if not replaced will it cause other issues?
george536 2 years ago
It's dificult to tell what issues it may cause on the long run. It will get progressively worse though as more wear occurs inside the camgear.
