  • It's actually originally played by Greg Howard on the Chapman Stick

  • what's your tuning bro?

  • My all time favorite bass riff EVER.

  • Nice tone and pocket; you'll want to make a straighter line of your right hand and arm. Fifteen years of that will give you CPS. Also, try moving your left elbow more under the neck, so you can keep the line of your arm and wrist straight as well. Finally, try using a spread on the left hand and using your pinky more. Strange at first, but it will make you more versatile.

  • thanks for your advice, i've been playing like this for 13 years. I don't play enough for it to be a problem. The camera angle makes it look worse than it is.

    take care.

  • is that a high b 5 string?

  • This is one of my favorite Dave songs and I always love Stefan for the bass. That kid knows his music. Thanks for bringing the bass out from under this song and giving us a better chance to listen to it. I agree, most people underestimate the bass =)

  • Very nice man, whish I knew a bass player round here. Everyone plays guitar just for the sake of playing guitar. All on acoustic, all of them singers, none of them really musicians. Just play for the simple reason to impress people.

  • Stefan Lessard is an incredible bassist and this is an awesome song. nice job

  • this is the sickest shit ever.

    i will never understand 7/8.

  • Think of 4 with 3 at the end or vice versa. Repetition will help.

  • Hey it's Schism by Tool! Just kidding but this is so different than what I'm used to from Dave Matthews Band. It's something I'd never expect from them you know? Sick tight though dude, I really dig it!

  • lol i thought about tool when i heard this to! stefan rules man

  • This is a bass dominant album! Carter and Stefan compliment each other so well! I learned the album on bass myself 5 or 6 years ago.

I love the Zon Sonus, the top is beautiful! it was what caught my eye when I was searching for videos.you are playing the lines just as melodic as Lessard!

If I can remember correctly, doesn't Micheal Manring string his Zon up tenor?

  • yet another reason i want to get into bass. i think this song would sound great on a fretless, too

  • It does. My bass teacher is playing it on one (a very beautiful instrument, by the way), and it sounds pretty badass. A very fun song to play :)

  • I think Stefan tunes his to (BEADG) but that sounds great anyway.. I like that you play by ear

  • nice man! love this groove!!

  • the string spacing on your bass is epic. is that 19mm? one of the reasons I could never get into 5 string is because of the narrower string spacing.

  • Wow! Dude, I think you did a really good job

  • Dude I love this song. Great bass line. What kind of bass are you playing it on? Can you still get that kind of sound with a 4-string?

  • sarcasm? cause i've seen stefan use 5 and 6 strings a ton over the years

  • Muito Muito Bom! (portuguese)

    Very Very nine!!!

  • Man, you make that look easy.

  • Many hours playing is all. :)

  • Zon Sonus... you like it man? I'm looking at a Modulus VJ, also carbon neck. Ever played one?

  • Yes, solid basses. Only a few subtle differences between Zon and Modulus. Actually Modulus' 'recipe' for their basses came from Joe Zon.

  • where di u get those tabs and please answer me im getting sick of trying to do this 15-19 on the d string then 12 on the e string really fast and doing over and over so plaese where did u get the tabs from

  • hostilestarz101, you have not asked me personally about these tabs yet. It is no one else's obligation to help you with them so don't get frustrated with a fellow bass player.

I do not have the tabs, I learn by ear as I trust that more than any other tab on the internet. I think all players should trust themselves, 99% of tablature on the internet is incomplete in one form or another.

  • I was told the verse line is not even a bass but Greg Howe on the Chapman Stick, he has a much easier time playing this line with the instruments range.

If you happen to be playing on a five string bass, string it up tenor (EADGC) and you'll have an easier time playing this.

  • Good luck and let me know how it turns out for you.

  • well thanks just for replying and its my sisters account that is named luckistarz. second of all im trying to play play this with my 4 string since i dont have a 5 but i wish i did. hopefully i will get it right one day thanks for replying again

  • Stefan's bass line's are amazing.

    you did a awesome job

  • great - loved your playing.

  • sweet

  • Holy shit, that was sweet. Nice job on a great DMB tune. I can never get that melodic verse part down... I'm jealous! Nice Work! Definately Favorited!

  • Thanks so much ! Just practice the line very slowly and get used to a 7 feel :)

  • nice bro

  • Its not actually the right way to play it. But its sounds okay.

  • I'm not trying to play this verbatim. Why would I play the line Stefan is ? I can't be Stefan, I can only do what I do best.

I'm glad I get your OK though :P

  • Wrong bass tab bro. Sorry.

  • amasing song and very good!

  • What kind of bass is that?

  • It's my baby.

    Zon Sonus Custom 5 strung up (E A D G C)

    -Quilted maple top

    -Ash body

    -Graphite composite neck

    -Phenowood fingerboard

    -Bartolini pickups

    -THG knobs

Thanks for your interest, take care.

  • nice playing. put some pants on.

are you sure the part you're playing isn't greg howard's stick part?

  • Give me a break, I'm wearing pajamas in my home.

  • i was kidding, it's all good.

  • I didn't know Howard was on the track, very interesting. Sounds like a groove he would write yet one that could pass for Lessard's Modulus tone.

  • yeah man check the credits. i think there's a definite division between the stick and bass parts but you have to listen carefully...i don't remember exactly but it's possible you're playing a kind of combination of both.

  • the beginning of the song is definately stefan. if you listen close, i think greg comes in around the 2nd verse or chorus, but you can definately tell the 2 parts from each other

  • Thanks ! I've made an effort to try and play music by popular artists but that are lesser known songs.

  • nice vid you're a good player and what do u have ur bass tuned at?

  • Sorry, I usually put the tuning in the description. My standard tuning for this bass is E A D G C. Thanks for your interest.
