The grid is not a waste of money. Decentralized generators may be safer but are clearly not more reliable. The US has one of the most reliable power systems in the world.

Energy Crisis - usually used to describe a lack of available power which results from too many people using too much power, not from grid infrastructure.

FYI - without the grid, a decentralized distributed generation network will not work.

I've been away for a while working on energy porjects. Yes whaaat2008 some of us actually work in the Energy Field. You are probably just one of the ignorant people who post without any knowledge. Can you please elaborate on how Amory Lovins is a charlatan? If he is indeed a fraud then why do so many companies world-wide hire him to help them save energy and money? Why has the RMI grown so much if his work is fraudulent?

Rocky Mountain Hype! Lovins is FLAT OUT WRONG. He is a complete fool in my opinion. Nuclear Power is our only means of clean reliable energy. Nuclear power is only uneconomical becasue of the LAWSUITS that stop projects. This drives up UNCERTAINITY AND costs and this is why it is uneconomical. What this clown hasn't talked about is France. France gets 80% of its power from Nuclear. Lovins never mentions this. Besides get in from of a camera and fool gullible interviewers.

Nuc's are our ONLY means of CLEAN RELIABLE energy. 1st- it is not our only means. If you study the problem, solar and wind are growing fast. The US added more wind power last year than coal in the last 5. Then there are small solar and wind for dispersed power generation. 2nd- Clean, are you kidding? We can't even get rid of the toxic radioactive waste. Recently, the French dumped radioactive material in their water and are telling people not to drink the water.

3rd- Reliable? Of the 253 plants originally planned, only 132 were actually built. Of those 21% were permanently and prematurely closed because of unreliability or/and cost. Another 27% have failed for a year or more at least once. We get part of our electricity from a nuc. and several times over the years, the plant has gone down and took our street lights and traffic lights with it. They make great terrorists targets though. The capitalists are not buying.

They cost less and kill fewer people than the Iraq war, but the idea didn't sell. Too bad, live with it. Now what can I do? I've cut my usage in half and plan to use wind and solar on property I'm buying. You are a EE. Design and market an affordable electric car conversion kit, and put me down as your first customer.

I am a big fan of RMI and what they stand for, but Amory Lovins is so hard to listen to. As for nuclear power fusion seams to be the new solution, that the Chinese are making great advances in.
