Everyone who thinks Peak Oil is BS needs to stop and ask a simple question. Why is the most powerful country in the world investing most of its military power in the middle east....and not in the Sudan or Korea or Maldovia for that matter. The answer is simple. America could care less about spreading democracy, there is only so much oil in the world and most of it is in the middle east. We will end up spilling equal drops blood for oil before this is over.
Things like happiness and our relationships with others will still exist, the material things in life being taken from us will only upset us as long as we cling to them. With all the technology and advanced science in the world today, people are still unhappy, people still fall in and out of love, the things that make us human never really change.
I can see a world post Peak Oil with a billion people living in sync with the planet, bound by nature. I believe this could be a true golden age ;)
For those dealing with te Peak Oil blues, I would suggest trying to think in a more global view. In the western world, we will be greatly hit by it, and it could easily spell the end of 7 billion people on the planet.
But we are survived by the third world, and all those undiscovered tribes in the Amazon. These people live off the grid of fossil fuels, and deal with the enviroment around them.
Our lives will change, empires come and go, but we are an adaptable species. (cont)
Electricity and combustion engines provide conveniences. We all like our conveniences, but we don't need them. Once people can sort that out and get their lives arranged to get along without them they will hardly miss them, humans are adaptable that way. What worries me is that we can't live without clean air and water, and those who are dedicated to fossil exploitation are responsible for tremendous levels of pollution of vital common resources. This issue requires attention, and action.
Why is the discussion of peak oil so one sided. As I explored this topic I found out about abiotic oil. And that crude oil is NOT a fossil fuel. I think I will be buying stock in ExxonMobile and Cheveron. The oil companies has us all by the balls. If you can't beat them, join 'em.
@bsdguy, dig deeper - Richard Heinberg has replied to that. Abiotic oil is a theory. Whether or not oil is a fossil fuel--burning it puts carbon in the atmosphere. We have to get off our addiction to anything that contributes to climate chaos.
@peakmoment this is true. I've seen people online claiming that we can still get oil and gas from lots of places. I've tried to tell them that isn't the point, for exactly the reason you say. We have to get off non-renewable fuel sources.
@peakmoment Carbon lags about 800 years behind temperature change.. go check out "The Great Global Warming Swindle" its on youtube...these are the guys that took legal action to have their names taken off the IPCC worlds top 2500 scientists, because the Governments were not listening to them because they were not being paid by Governments..
we live in the atmosphere of the sun.. we are carbon based life.. Volcanoes spew out heaps of carbon, carbon is good for the planet.
@bratticusful and @skeletonmom, what I heard Kathy saying is that Stanford research showed that spending a lot of time on computers is socially isolating, and people become more depressed. She's suggesting people interact with other people and relearn social skills. We don't exercise those face-to-face skills on Facebook or social media -- skills like learning to read a person's mood without their saying a word.
I dont agree with the computers stop you from socializing. Computers, like any other tool can be used constructively or not. Facebook, texting, cell phones, etc can be used to touch bases with people who are too far away to see in person often, or set future plans to see close people on a regular basis. As for watching on the computer-its the type of content you watch: educational, inspiring, etc. Do you feed your brain? TV, yeah, its crap-but its also a dying media.
Great video. Unfortunately the masses have been raised from birth that you can only be happy by consuming more and more.... only the strong and disciplined will be able to accept the difficult reality of Peak Oil and the lower standard of living that goes with it....
@MrEnergyCzar I subscribe to UR channel Respectfully as 1 who is trying to show UR way of preparing, U shouldn't be reinforcing the lower standard of living scare tactic of those who wouldn't do anything to prepare All in my opinion of course...
@lonewolfmtnz You must be joking. One good thing about societal collapse is the thought that words can be owned. As far as I am concerned the words I am typing out now to your dumbass are owned by no one.
@valhala56 yes 'joking' but also pointing out that this co-opted phrase has been 'borrowed' meaning it was 'lifted' from a known source. She also appears to be approximately the correct age (as am I) to have been a "Firesign Theater" fan. Hardly an original 'thought', which admittedly meshes well with all the other regurgitated verbal mumbo jumbo voodoo on offer.
@lonewolfmtnz Well we are back square one, you myopic twit. Guess where I lifted that one from, No not Monty Python. Your brain suffers from Post modern rot, years of indoctrination that you or some other enity "Owns" somthing. Hate to break it to ya but you don't own anything. You may have tempory custody of something but realize this in your feeble lifespan of roughly 80 years makes the concept that you own anything laughable.
You do make an excellant example of an annoying nitpicker.
We're all Bosos on the bus?!? ...in many people's minds that bus has been determined, in fact it is one of the reasons that people prefer computers/technology
Lets accept the fact that people are annoying?!? ...again an common accepted belief
better to accept that if we find our selves feeling annoyed we can change our own feelings ...it is a 'thing' ...an aspect we have the power to change ...we(as a culture) have known about labelling for more that 60 years ...we CAN change how we 'label'
Very, very, good points, enjoyed this video. People and thier electronic gadjets etc. especially the younger kids, their devices are glued to thier hands and their heads are down looking/playing with these things constantly. Not looking good for their futures and social skills.
I had to chuckle at the "inability to find credible deniers" comment at the beginning, they actually reinforce the certainty. From denial to acceptance is a long road and the road just keeps getting longer. I appreciate the concept of dealing with "other bozos on the bus" and have "made friends" with as many locals as possible, especially the already disenfranchised criminal element and the local police - at some time someone is going to have to be a peacemaker or there will be chaos.
Fascinating video. The notion of "finding out about peak oil" kind of surprised me, because I've always known about it. After thinking about it, I think it's because of my age, I was a teenager in the late 70s & early 80s, so I developed my world view at a time of energy crisis and recessions, when it was general knowledge that fossils fuels would one day run out. I guess people older than me figured that that whole episode was result of cartels and fraud, and the youngr 1s didnt live thru it
There are very real problems in the world. East african famine, London riots, the financial collapse of Europe not to mention all of the problems in the US and Mrs McMahon in her own words has created a disorder? I think the world has enough problems without psudo disorders being created.
Dr McMahon has said and written on a number of occasions that she created "Panglossian Disorders" as a tongue-in -cheek -shoe on the other foot thought experiment. Did you ever read her variations on Panglossian disorders? Rhett Butler-ism ( frankly, I don't give a damn) and Scarlett Ohara-ism ( I'll just have to think about that tomorrow). She is using humor to approach difficult truths. She is a careful and nuanced thinker.

It IS a problem that people are annoying. Their called manners and people need to learn/use them.
OR is little johnnies self-esteem more important?
