i thought hammill was the perfect mix of cackling prankster and bloodthristy anarchist that the comic is known for. nicholson's and ledger's jokers were on opposite extremes
I feel like i bring on a bunch of haters when i comment on shit on yourtube I hate that. neither is "better". but I prefer nicholson. if I had to choose. and the character and look of the joker
now...this is just ME but if i were there i would'a grabbed a few 'hunnit' bucks or so and got my ass outta there! be like 'thanks fer da money...but you can keep the fatal laughing gas, thx!'
"And where is the batman?" hanging out in his awesome batplane like a boss and he doesn't try 2 kill the "little people" so go home and wash ur tights haha lol u wear pantz
I think Mark Hamill is awesome in anything he does even when he was playing around and helping out the master scrub Kevin Smith in the sequel to mall rats he was awesome even in the American flop remake of guyver he was awesome as the joker in the animated series he redefined the concept of the joker and made the character a more amusing and accessible part of the mythos originally the joker was a take on Zingaros or white gypsy's or Italians from Africa as well as genius, but definitely awesome
Burtons approach was more stylistic where he places us in batmans world vs nolans version where he places batman in ours. there were some dark elements in jack's performance that let you know he is still the dangerous killer he was b4 the change such as when he talks to the electrified corpse. it was comically dark as the joker reveals his plans to kill the heads of the other syndicates. this clip shows that duality as well you can hear the relish in his laugh as he releases the gas on the crowd
If you think about it this movie happens chronologically after the ones with Christian Bale as Batman so heath is the beginning of the Joker and Jack is the END...But also the movies were made to sell toys and lunchboxes as opposed to be fine cinema avant garde.
Did you see this in theaters when it came out? it converted many 80s kids to become Batman fans as it did to me when i was 8 seeing it 5 times in theaters and i read the comics after that including my big brothers DC/Marvel comics and i had the merchandise to this movie that year including eating the cereal. I saw the sequel 4 times in theaters at 11 and watched the animated show religiously, did you ever see the show as well?
I was too busy trying not to be eaten by my little pony and rainbow brite, but I did see it in theaters and it was overwhelming for me at the time, I think I saw Highlander 2 sometime after or before and that had a bigger impact on me than this because of the Cyberpunk elements but Nicholson was a little better than Ledger based on him being true to the comic character as opposed to having to placate the identity issues of the teenage boys that were fans of the Dark Knight...
I like Heath's more TBH. I mean his performance as the Joker was through the roof. Also, in the movie the Joker never really revealed how or why his face is like that, when he tells the story, it's different all the time. Also the face paint was scary. Jack was a good to, but Ledger was awesome.
I hate it when people say Jack is just playing himself- in my opinion, his portrayal of teh Joker is definatly more faithful to the comics. He kills for Fun!! Heath Ledgers Joker is still great though.
"And now comes the part where I relieve you the little people of the burden of your failed and useless lives but as my plastic surgeon always said if you gotta go go with a smile".
Ledger had the acting but this is the look, maybe a bit heavy, but the basic look. Rictus grin, bleached skin, green hair and red lips. Ledgers Joker had the wrong style, it just wasn't Joker. But his personality was close.
Well he did have the make up he just seemed more dirty and I loved that. I could almost smell the joker through my tv lmao. But I think both Jokers are worthy of the title :)
@SalamaJaUkkonen I love Ledgers performance and he does look great, but as you said he had makeup. Obviously it's going to be makeup since it's a movie but Joker got his look from chemicals. And he isn't supposed to be dirty, he's put together which makes him being 'crazy' more crazy. This version looks like someone you would walk up to for a balloon without expecting anything, but with the other you wouldn't go anywhere near him unless you were forced. But yeah they were both awesome. :)
Well think of it this way, The Joker from the comics and this movie was disfigured by the waste he fell in. So in all fairness Ledgers character was disfigured as well only a little differently. As for what happen to the joker the "falling in the waste" was only one of the stories. He change a lot over the years so thats only one story. And if you think about it as well the joker being filthy and just a sinister person is more along the lines of what The Joker was. A crazy clown
@AGracelessLady Alan Moore made the first and most comprehensive story on the Joker's origin, "The Killing Joke". It's where the story of the chemicals and all that is established, IIRC. Thing is, the artist felt that giving the Joker an origin detracted from the character, and the comic itself implies the origin may be false- false memories the Joker hallucinates. While people tend to follow this origin, there's technically no wrong origin for the Joker, he has a "multiple-option past."
jack nicholson is the best!! it thrills me to see so many people who, like me, believe he was and still is the best at portraying the joker. heath ledger provided a great performance, don't get me wrong, but this was the joker i knew from the cartoon and the comics. the joker who seems calm and collected at times, even though you know he's a complete psycho. ledger's joker was too serious; he's supposed to be wacky, that's pretty much his whole shtick.
@16moviefan I thought I was the only one who got this, good to see that there are people who understand that Batman is not supposed to be emo and its meant to be over the top, lawls!
@16moviefan There were different forms of the joker. I believe the original Joker was just a pure homicidal maniac which is what Heath's Joker was. They then had to tone the Joker down for the cartoons.
@16moviefan What about Mark Hamill's Joker? This character sticks to the comics, and Mark's performance is flawless and believable. Is Jack's Joker still superior than Mark's or are they equal?
@16moviefan Ledger rip was brilliant but for the too dark and scary batman movie and type they were tyring to put out. I agree though way too serious yey saying why so serious so it made no sense. Its really too dark for my taste and look whre it got ledger...I see poeple now with the new joker smile logo as a tattoo yet they are the most serious peopel I know. I prefer nicholson coked out on champaigne than a heroin mushroom depressed type. no offence...
@16moviefan but dn;t get me wrong I respect and love ledger. I shed atear when I learned he passed away so sad and I watched the film 8 tmes in the theater it was so ausome and briliant. I grew up with keaton and nicholson and the 80s style so.
I really cant compare the two to be honest its liek comparing picard to kirk. or like ...ummm..roger moor to sean sonnery or something...wait..lets say ok sean conncery to brosnan maybe? ..? as a replacement I'd use that kid from 3rd rock from the sun
As good as this movie is the ending always kind of bugged me. Like where are all the cops? Joker is parading thru the streets throwing money with floats, and this goes on for like 10 minutes before he starts to gas people to death, and it isn't until after batman's plan crashes that you see any police. Its not like Joker's plan was a surprise, he actually ANNOUNCED he was going to do it earlier in the film live on tv...
@GuaranteedRawMusic Well think about it, the whole city is out partying and causing trobule and all are too busy grabbing moneya nd such that they ahve no exact clue what is going on.
@HBK344356 I think your forgetting the fact that Joker killed like over 13 people already in this movie before this scene...the police would take him down the first chance they had...like say if he was parading thru the streets throwing money? Snipers anyone? Your argument makes no sense
@GuaranteedRawMusic It's a movie dude it is not real life yes you do make a valid point that i did not think of .Is every film supposed to match everything that would happen in real life??
@HBK344356 Of course not, and i realize that. I acknowledge that this movie is great and a favorite of mine, but that does not mean it's perfect. To me they kind of dropped the ball with the ending. The whole cop thing is just one point, i feel like the movie became a cartoon at the end. Like with Joker pulling out a big ass pistol that shot batman's plan down with 1 shot...wtf is that? Jokers other little props like the fake teeth, the pistol with the "BANG" flag, and the glasses he had on him
@HBK344356 but the thing that bugged me most about the ending is the fact that batman actually KILLS people. That's like the biggest contradiction to his character ever
@GuaranteedRawMusic Actually no it's not. This was base don batman in the first year he debuted (1939) inw hcih he killed people. He even had a gun, however this was before Robin and any of the villains.
Favorite monologue... "And now...comes the part...where I relieve you, the LITTLE people...of the burden...of your FAILED...and useless lives BUT, as my plastic surgeon always says...IF YOU GOTTA GOOO...GO with a smile!"
This movie came out the day i graduated 9th grade which was also the day after my birthday! I saw it 4 times in the theater and well over 200 times since. Wore out 2 vhs cassettes and i was once able to recite the entire movie! CLASSIC!
"And now comes the part where I relieve you the little people, of the burden and your failed and useless lives, but as my plastic surgeon always said, "If you gotta go, go with a smile!" LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
Hell yeah! No offense to Heath Ledger, but Jack Nicholson played Joker the way Joker was always meant to be played, and he did it better than anyone else ever could.
Bully for them! But just in case, I'll amend that by saying that Heath Ledger played his version of Joker better than anyone else could have.It's always nice to see the people who agree that Jack's take on the Joker was the best.
Agreed. The way I see it, this is the way Joker should be played, although I will say good luck to whoever follows Heath Ledger's footsteps. The way he played Joker, I don't see anyone else outdoing his performance.
@DJCandyManMike But he wasn't even really playing The Joker, he was more like a creepy terrorist than the Clown Prince of Crime. Joker has charisma and style, Ledger's version was just the hobo on the bus no one makes eye contact with, except with guns.
@GroddGuerrilla The original portrayal of Mr J had him as a mirthless murderer and so do the most recent portrayals. However that is not to say you're wrong as there have been many versions close to that as done by wonderful Jack N! Depends on your favourite. If there's ONE thing certain about the Joker's personality...that is that there's nothing certain about it. He's really, really insane!!!
I usually don't count Mark Hamil since he didn't play a live action Joker. I do, however, need to watch more of the animated series, as what I've heard of his work in that tells me he did a great job.
Did you ever see the animated show in the 90's? it aired near prime time and appealed to all ages especially adults since it was dark and adult themed. Loved it since i was 11 as i watched it religiously.
I really never watched it much, though like I said, I think I will start watching it sometime. I've heard a lot of people say really good things about Mark Hamil's performance in the show, but I haven't seen it enough to really understand first hand how well he did.
I know im late saying anything, but let me say this. BATMAN, BATMAN BEGINS, and THE DARK KNIGHT are hands down the best BATMAN movies FACT! Now as far as who's the better Joker. The answer is.....BOTH. Any real fan of BATMAN can see that both Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger real gave fans both sids of the JOKER. He's Been as both in the comics...Im a long long time fan. I loved both JOKERS. If u were to put both of them together you would get the JOKER of the comics.
What about Mask of the Phantasm, Sub-Zero, Superman/Batman The Animated Movie and Under the Red Hood including the animated series? and what about Mark Hamil's Joker?
Put it this way: The 2 scenes with Jack Nicholson as the Joker where, #1) As he's leaving that surgeon's decripid laboratory after smashing the light bulb and #2) Immediately after he breaks Tony Rotelli's neck and says "I'm glad you're dead!".......... Are the best laughs by any person who has portrayed the Joker in history, even better than Mark Hamill!
And in the Darkn Knight ni the new movie, they're taking Joker back to his oringal roots, to when yeah he had those disturbing jokes we all know and love but he was more sadistic and scarred physically and mentally. This is going to be the darker side of Batman and those in it, so dont count out Ledger out yet.
Great clip, I love this scene. It seems pretty trendy right now to just rag on Nicholson's performance, but looking at how Heath Ledger appears in The Dark Knight, this role is much closer to the entire spectrum of Batman comics than the incredibly disappointing look of Ledger is. Jack was tailor made for this role, the "Bob, gun" scene is just pure Joker.
Heath Ledgers Joker is a lot more darker than Jack Nicholson's joker, which isn't really a good thing, Joker's got that way of being funny and psychotic all at once. Heath Ledger seems to be doing a 'goth' version of The Joker <_<;
I have to say, after seeing the recent official Dark Knight teaser, I disagree. I felt the same way you did about Heath's Joker from pictures, because in every one the makeup looked off and he wasn't smiling. But having heard his vocal performance on the teaser, I am extremely excited. His laugh is pretty much as dead on as you can be without being Mark Hamill. I'm looking forward to this.
Leaving Mark Hamill out of this, Heath Ledger's Joker laugh was good, but nobody does a gothic-like laugh as the Joker better than Jack Nicholson..... Then again, the Joker's laugh from TDK teaser didn't really impress me that much...
Joker is a terrorist. Gassing the entire city of people FTW.

This version Joker's makeup looks more sinister. Heath Ledger's Joker makeup makes him look more insane.

This movie really puts me at odds, because I LOATHE Jack Nicholson with a passion. But I really can't fault a performance like that. It's brilliant.

I think the two Tim Burton movies are easier to watch than the Christian Bale ones which need a few viewings to get into properly.

Hell yeah! No offense to Heath Ledger, but Jack Nicholson played Joker the way Joker was always meant to be played, and he did it better than anyone else ever could.

@DJCandyManMike Amen! but dont say that too loud, you get a war started with Ledger fans, LOL!
retrofann1 1 year ago
@retrofann1
Bully for them! But just in case, I'll amend that by saying that Heath Ledger played his version of Joker better than anyone else could have.It's always nice to see the people who agree that Jack's take on the Joker was the best.

@DJCandyManMike ledger was like the crow
fuckgd1 1 year ago
@fuckgd1
Agreed. The way I see it, this is the way Joker should be played, although I will say good luck to whoever follows Heath Ledger's footsteps. The way he played Joker, I don't see anyone else outdoing his performance.
DJCandyManMike 1 year ago
@DJCandyManMike But he wasn't even really playing The Joker, he was more like a creepy terrorist than the Clown Prince of Crime. Joker has charisma and style, Ledger's version was just the hobo on the bus no one makes eye contact with, except with guns.
GroddGuerrilla 1 year ago
@GroddGuerrilla
Exactly why Jack Nicholson will always be better! Nicholson was, hands down, born to play the Joker!
DJCandyManMike 1 year ago
@GroddGuerrilla The original portrayal of Mr J had him as a mirthless murderer and so do the most recent portrayals. However that is not to say you're wrong as there have been many versions close to that as done by wonderful Jack N! Depends on your favourite. If there's ONE thing certain about the Joker's personality...that is that there's nothing certain about it. He's really, really insane!!!

What about Mark Hamil?
Johnlindsey289 3 months ago
@Johnlindsey289
I usually don't count Mark Hamil since he didn't play a live action Joker. I do, however, need to watch more of the animated series, as what I've heard of his work in that tells me he did a great job.
DJCandyManMike 3 months ago
@DJCandyManMike
Did you ever see the animated show in the 90's? it aired near prime time and appealed to all ages especially adults since it was dark and adult themed. Loved it since i was 11 as i watched it religiously.
Johnlindsey289 3 months ago
@Johnlindsey289

Kayxzero 4 years ago 2

HeWhoGetsSlapped24 4 years ago
I've always viewed Jacks portrayal of Joker as just a bit off.
SPIDERDAVE 4 years ago
I see you like the Bat in the Sun fan films; they had a FANTASTIC Joker, very creepy and totally insane.
HeWhoGetsSlapped24 4 years ago
Heath Ledgers Joker is a lot more darker than Jack Nicholson's joker, which isn't really a good thing, Joker's got that way of being funny and psychotic all at once. Heath Ledger seems to be doing a 'goth' version of The Joker <_<;
Chanuk 4 years ago 2
I have to say, after seeing the recent official Dark Knight teaser, I disagree. I felt the same way you did about Heath's Joker from pictures, because in every one the makeup looked off and he wasn't smiling. But having heard his vocal performance on the teaser, I am extremely excited. His laugh is pretty much as dead on as you can be without being Mark Hamill. I'm looking forward to this.
HeWhoGetsSlapped24 4 years ago
Leaving Mark Hamill out of this, Heath Ledger's Joker laugh was good, but nobody does a gothic-like laugh as the Joker better than Jack Nicholson..... Then again, the Joker's laugh from TDK teaser didn't really impress me that much...
