I had a '65 with the single 4bbl 401 motor and never had to stand on the brake -- just put my foot in it and lit 'em up! Great entertainment for the Marines standing main gate watch at North Island NAS back in '84-'85!
i know i am gonna sound like an idiot, but would 64 Buick Rivieras be considered more of a luxury car or muscle car. Just curious because they are faster than hell, but are pretty luxurious and comfortable too and give a nice ride.
At the time they came out they were called the "Bankers Hot Rod." So, sort of a cross between both. A refined, luxurious muscle car intended for rich guys.
Yep. They were targeting the more "refined" buyer. Basically, the same people who might have gave the Oldsmobile Toronado (piece of crap) and the Cadillac El Dorado a look. The Riviera was the best, to me. The later ones with the 455 were faster, but I really like nailheads for thier look and reliability.
@chompychomps Actually the 1970 455 Riv was slower than the 425 64' riv. As was the 69 the pinnicle years for the riv performance wise was 67 then 64. In 69 even with the 430 which breathed better than the 425 the car balooned to 4600lbs as compared to 3950 to 4100lbs for a 64. The 1970 was even more porcine and suffered despite the more powerful mill.
@Crambo77 My 64 425 nailhead hits 60 in around 7 sec little less, little more sometimes. The 67 I think did it in 6.5 to 6.7, The 69 430 riv was 0 to 60 in 9 seconds, and the 70 with the 455 ran about the same 8.8 to 9 seconds. Unfortunatly the Riv got too fat for the 455 so that the 30 or so more foot pounds of torque over the Wildcat Dual Quad 425 was not enough.
:) yeah i know it's 510 ft-lbs.! every gm fan knows it because it was the highest torque rating in the muscle era!!! but who knows? it's only FACTORY rating so maybe it's higher. like the ZL1 427's chevy rated it at a laughable 430hp. thats RIDICULOUS. when we dynoed a stock L-88 and putted down 570hp i was wondering how much hp the ZL1 would do..
kk :P lol ya i know though gotta love the general :D and from wat iv all accumulated the ZL-1's put down anywere from 550hp up to and over 600hp! :D one of my fav. muscle cars right there!
ZL1 camaros are the fastest STOCK STREET LEGAL muscle cars ever! hemi's , super cobra jet's has no chance against the ZL1's . yeah zl1's are my favourites after the 1970 ss454:)
oh most definitly!:P to me the hemi's r and were over rated..but yes definitly my fav. rit after the 1970 chevelle ss 454(dont forget the ls-6 engine version :D) and the 1970 buick gsx 455 stage1, and other COPO cars and oh dont forget the 1970 olds 4-4-2 W30 455 and the 1970 Judge GTO 455 :P
oh yeah i have much respect for the buick 455 (stage 1's) cuz they are one of the fastest muscle cars ever. and they were good looking cars. but yeah all A-body cars are fuckin beautiful . gto's, 442's etc etc! years ago i wanted an LS6 but'the price tag of those cars are fuckin high. so i ended up with my 1970 LS5 :)! it does the job too:D!
most definitly im a chevy guy but have love for any and all A-bodied cars, they freaking flew of the lines! if only i was of ur generation i would b in heavan! and hey those ls-5's are just as bad too! :P just remember 454 mmm b-e-a-u-tiful! :D
yeah in stock trim i could cover the 1/4 in 13:89 with my ls5! that was two years ago. now it has 558hp and 560ft-lbs at the flywheel. but i never tryed on the 1/4 since it was stock! but it's my car to have sooo much fun! everybody smiles when they see that car. the feeling to drive tose cars are UNIQIE!! no import can do that better:) ohh..and when i smoke some expensive imports with it.. that's a fucking good feeling too!
nice, ya gotta love good old american muscle cars! :P im only 18 and iv always loved them, never got into the import scene and glad i didnt really. i have a 1969 LeSabre 400 rit now its now big block but she can haul :P id love to see there faces wen u smoke'em too :D gotta b great!
yeah that's what i was talking about:) their reaction when i blew their doors at between the stop lights. the last one was a 2001 bmw m5. i smoked him but the guy stayed chill. but a year ago i smoked a porsche 911 the guy was fuckin freaked out..but hes girls friend smiled :D:D!
lmao! its always nice to see ppl good with it though thats always a pluz. lol that had to have been embarassing though to the guy XD man if only i could have seen would have been great!
and yeah hemi's are very very over rated!!! yes they have AWESOME potential to get power of it but hey a brand new 426 crate hemi costs like $30 000 and thats a stock 425hp engine! a 572 chevy costs the half pf the price and has 620hp in mild version!! CHEVY IS THE BEST when it cames to american v8's! it's the best period!
haha i was just about to refer to the 572 and the fact that the HEMI'S cost an arm and a leg to get but yes! thats one reason y im a loyal GM guy cant argue with performance numbers and value :P pluz it took so much to get the HEMI's tuned and keep them tuned, i think like every week or every other week u needed them to keep retuning them to b in there potential range..could b rong about that one though..
yeah that's true about hemi's! but every multiple carbed v8's needs to be tuned more than a single 4 bbl. my uncle had a 1963 catalina 4 years ago. that was a 421 tri-power 4 speed car! he tuned the car like every month and it was very very hard to tune it WELL!! but when it was tuned....OH MY GOD..:)
oh ok ic ic hm makes scense though dodge and all the mopars liked to multi carb everything so ya i can see that. just imagine if gm multi carbed there already awesome big blocks oh man i cant even imagine it :P but ya catalina's r nice cars :P
ya, kinda wished they would have continued that but for the power they put out with just single 4 bbr carbs is awesome :D man i love those rat rods too! :P and dont forget the porcupine 396 :D
one of the best cars out there if you want performance and luxury.

A luxury car. The power was a bonus but also sort of expected back then.
