  • at 2:30 it sounds like you're playing "i fought the law". that must b the tuning they use for that song.

  • Aussie?

  • i broke my string -___-

  • thanks man very important trick that I missed, thanks again !!!

  • 2:48

Everyone watch this before starting the video from the beginning.

Or be an idiot like me and face the consequences.

  • Justin, dude, you're a nice fellow, but could you PLEEEZZZ stop that ticking noise with your tongue. Thanks.

  • I really wish I had watched the whole video before I got into it and snapped a string. The thought of making my guitar all jangly was just too much for me I guess. God damn justin, putting a warning at the start could've saved me $5.

  • One of the pioneers of this tuning was my friend Gimmer Nicholson. His album “Christopher Idylls” utilized this tuning with a guitar that he made himself and gave to me before he died. Gimmer crafted these melodic masterpieces as lullabies next to Chris’s crib back in the 70’s before the term “New Age” ever existed. Rolling Stone magazine praised the re-release back in 1990 something. The album is still available on Amazon. Thanks for the lesson.

  • I just broke all my strings :D THANKS JUSTIN

  • 3:08 nose pick.

  • Can I use a set of D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze?

    It's got

    .012,

    .016,

    .024,

    .032,

    .042,

    .053

  • @sahilcc7 I wouldn't try that. I think anything above .032 won't tune that high. That's too much tension on your guitar.

  • some people actually use Banjo strings for this purpose right?

  • Comment removed

  • and the cheesestr.. G string! lol i loved that

  • I miss partying in Nashville. I don't remember no nashville tuning in the villa but what the hell. Cool vid

  • If I have an acoustic and I'm just starting out writing songs, would Nashville be a good tuning to start with other than the usual Open tunings such as G and E?

  • Now that you've mentioned it being used as a double for acoustic tracks,

I can pick it out all the time in recordings lol. I now know what to do with my tiny old yamaha guitar :-)

    cheers

  • Nice

  • why not just capo the guitar at the 12th fret????

  • @robertrobin10 freakin dumbass. not all strings are up a fret.geez. can u play chords on 12th fret? idiot

  • @robertrobin10 cause 1. that will throw off the intonation and 2. not all strings are tuned up an octave

  • @robertrobin10

    Its not the same.

The strings sound as if only the first 4 are tuned an octave higher, the bottom 2 are still in normal tuning.

Its to make it sound brighter against a regularly tuned guitar

  • First: May I ask if "an octave higher" means that I can fret at the 12th fret and keep turning tighter till my tuner says it's tuned on the big E, A, D, G strings?

Second: What is a semi-tone lower mean? I'll enlighten you that my cheap electronic tuner has a -50 flat to +50 sharp scale, with in the middle of those two being standard EADGBE tuning.

Anyone? No rush, as I'm a scrub and shouldn't be jacking around, anyway. But I don't want to destroy my crummy Epiphone AJ-100 just yet, lol

  • Good video

  • Is this the tuning johnny marr used for most of the smiths acoustic layering?

  • I am going to be 50 in 4 months ... I have played guitar for more than 35 years now and I must say, young man like you teaching me stuff is really wicked. I was going to do a remake of Pink Floyd's Hey You and heard about the Nashville Tuning used in that song. Your tutorial is the best of them all mostly because your explanations are simple and clear without bells and whisels ... Thx so much for sharing, I really appreciate.

    Yves from Canada

  • i think it would be a good idea to inform people, to chage the strings befor you start with the tuning, at the start not in the middle

  • very interesting, thanks for posting!!!

  • I want to try nashville tuning, and i am not sure about one thing. If my guitar is set to .12 gauge, i have to do something with truss rod, like when i change gauge of strings? i would use medium set of strings to nashville tuning

  • A useful tip for those having any problems getting the strings for Nashville tuning is to buy a set for a twelve string guitar (a heavier gauge if possible) you then have one set of strings for the Nashville tuning guitar and another set for your regular tuned guitar. It saves money too,

  • Informative video. Its just a shame that people like Rushguitarist1 have to show their lack of intelligence by giving someone a cussing because they think they know everything.

  • I put my acoustic in this tuning, but my A string isn't a wound string. the only wound string I have is the D string, and it's from a 12 gauge set. it's tight in standard so I leave it in drop d most of the time.

  • You rock, now I got a travel guitar set up with Nashville tuning strings. It is AWESOME when tracking!

  • At 3:10 you picked a buger from your nose... this clip is 5:35. So you took your "lunch" at 5:36?... he he..

  • I've been playing for a living for decades, and I still enjoyed this lesson. We can always learn from others. Cheers and rock on!

  • Justin I have my 6 string banjo strung this way..WICKED..

  • So I'm guessing you must have to re-setup your guitar if you do this tuning right?

  • @RaiseItToEleven just the strings

  • what acoustic is that?

  • @21Placebo he says it in the video.

  • salut.tres bon travail de ta part.pense tu un jour introduire yey you de pink floyd dans tes lessons.marc

  • justin , you are a brillant tutor, one of the best !!!!!!

    be3rher

  • Cant i Nashville Tune an Electric Guitar?

  • thanks for the info!

  • Should've changed the gauge. Yep, like others who didn't finish watching the lesson I snapped a string. Damn!

  • Too much talk, not enough play. D'Addario Strings sells strings in packages for Nashville tuning, aka "high strung tuning" is anyone needs to do this or wants to try it. After that, it's easy to figure out. Always best to have a second guitar to do this on.

  • Really wierd I can't tell if the guy is 22 or 50, he looks incredbly different ages in different lights

  • Law is what we Aussies call a dickhead.

  • thats pretty much the same term we'd use for him in the us too

  • whats up with law down here ??

  • Well before you start dishing out the napalm, that's an Australian accent. Australia. You may have heard of it? It's about as far away from Britain as you can be without going into space.

I suggest you take your guitar back to the guitar shop under warranty if you've broken a string. I'm sure they'll be very happy to see you. Which bit of "you need to change to different gauge strings" don't you get?

P.S. AUSTRALIA. It's a country. Outside of America. Somewhere else. Nowhere near Wisconsin.

  • I'm Australian and thought he had an english accent

  • Experiment! That's the whole idea of 'this music thing'.. cracked me up hehe xD

  • playing collective soul "shine" is really cool sounding in this tuning. I personally prefer to play it on my 12 string, but the fact it is a 12 string acoustic makes it hard to play for long periods of time

  • learned barr chords from you.you have a great unique teaching style that is easier to comprehend than other teachers.keep up the great work like your enthusiasm which makes learning easier and that much more fun!

  • I have a bb10 bb blaster 10w practice amp. when i turn it on and plug the guitar in there is a loud buzzing noise which get slouder when i touch the strings. can anybody help me with this?

  • happened to me before. You need a new cable.

  • or you have a bad ground or no ground on your plug

  • I think you need a new cable or maybe just a new amp. I use a starmaker G-10 with my fender squier strat. I got it with me guitar which cost about 150-230 pounds so if you buy it seprate it should cost about 50 pounds maybe 100 pounds. also with picks I tend to go for thicker ones as the thin ones drag on the strings and are flimsy xxx

  • the blues riff you played actually sounds pretty cool in this tuning

  • Ya learn a new thing ever'day.

  • How have I managed to not know this stuff for so long? That sound is in so much music. Time to dig out my old acoustic and restring it.

  • If you're going the spare acoustic method you could always just get a 12-string set and split them between the two guitars.

  • breakin rocks in the -- hot sun! :)

  • Justin What about drop C/C# tuning am i going to have to get even thicker strings?

  • i think you will have tu change the strings anyway, you can`t tune a regular E string into a higher C ( the same for the rest of the strings)

  • he wrote "drop C", it means your low E goes all the way down to a low C, and usually for lower tunings more string tension comes useful

  • This sounds great for some Floyd songs but perhaps the most obvious "Nashville" song is Wild Horses by the Stones.

    Love the lessons Justin.

Go raibh mile maith agat .

  • i love how you wrote in gaelic at the end. i havent seen that since i was a little boy

  • Its irish not gaelic

  • gaelic is celtic. it is irish dumbass

  • no gaelic is the scottish language, gaeilge is irish

  • Nah man its a Gaelic language but its not called Gaelic

  • Its a Gaelic language as in...one of the Gaelic languages.....Its redundant as fuck?My comment has recently lost its job due to its company requiring cutbacks or something?Nice English...

  • please play nicely children!!!!!

  • @Rowburt51088 Damn dude it's not a big deal get ur irish head out of your ass

  • @Rushguitarist1 after i take my outta my ass ill headbutt you in the nose, have a good one tho. thanks for comenting 5 years later also

  • @Rowburt51088 Sure you will after I WIPE YOU OFF THE FACE OF THIS EARTH NOW STEP BACK AND LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!

  • are you from ENGLAND? starbritania?

  • I used to watch your videos all the time when I was first learning. Then about 6 months I figured "I dont need lessons anymore" and I stoped watching. But I just learnt something new today.

  • Nice nose pick at 3:12 :)

Why do you tune your guitars a semitone lower?

  • Well, I know for people starting it's easier to fret the strings as they aren't as 'tense' as in regular tuning, but I doubt that's a problem Justin has haha. The only other reason I can think of is because when detuned a semitone, you can do a low Eb, which isn't possible in regular tunings. Personal preference really. The band Weezer detune their guitars a semitone for every song they do. Wild, I know.

  • WE LOVE YOU JUSTIN

  • awesome dude,

all the guitars you have are like super ultra high quality ones, HOW MUCH DO THEY ALL COST!! id have to work for like 20 years with my currant job to get them all!

    nice work bro

  • Great lesson. Thanks for the information.

  • Hi Justin, thank you so much for all these great lessons. This tuning is not the same as the one in GG-101 video but you refer to that as "nashville"

    also. Which one is it?

    Thanks!

  • This one is proper nashville - the other one is "nashville" in that the strings are changed and the octaves are up... but I thin open tuned it for the vid in GG-101. J

  • nice guitar,, big sound, for a small body,

    what is it sir?

  • Justin says in the first few seconds of the vid... it's a 'Maton' (brand) Mini.

  • i like how he stuttered on "g-string". lol

  • to get it right side up change flip=1 to flip=0 in the address bar and reload.

  • this april fools youtube is awesome

  • my friend my band is in myspace ,,bandapatentependiente,,,

you are good teacher and i have sa friend in there, gaciasnamigo, greetings from venezuela

  • Justin is that correct?

    E2 to E3

    A2 to A3

    D3 to D4

    G3 to G4

    B3 and E4 remain unchanged

  • Nice video, Justin. What is your reason for tuning down a semitone as a regular practice?

  • I'm not Justin, but I also regulary tune down half step. I Began to do it while learning some Guns, SRV, Hendrix, and others. Give it a try, sounds nice.

  • i like the sound of it, and good for my singing key.

  • Thanks. I've seen plenty of artists do this, but other than lowering the range for vocals, when I've tried it the difference in tuning was to subtle for me to bother with on a regular basis.

  • @johnhorneguitar Tuning down a semitone is a good idea to take the pressure off your guitar neck especially if it's in a hot room and then when you need to play along with someone or a recording you can easily tune it up to standard.

  • Even though i'll not tune my guitar like this, you put some good information. I would like to know more about tuning. I'm ALWAYS scared when i tune, if the string breaks i'll get mad! Special when i tune acoustic, the "scroll" is very hard and i don't dare to tune it higher.. So would be nice for more information?

  • Thank you for sharing

    DDR

  • I always wondered what Nashville tuning was, and found out a while ago when I started doing some research on Pink Floyd's Hey You. I could never get a 12 string to sound just the way the studio recording sounded...then...lo and behold...I discovered Nashville tuning!

I keep an acoustic strung up in Nashville tuning full time now, and it's excellent for several Pink Floyd songs (mostly off The Wall).

Also sounds great playing higher bars like Em, Dm, etc!

  • I always wondered what this was when I saw a pack of D'addarios. It's interesting but makes me think "why not just get a 12?"

  • Simple but great idea. Just a thought, i've never bought strings for a 12 string acoustic but could you just buy a set in your own preferred gauge and play around with the irregular strings on just a 6 string guitar? Then you've got the regular strings to replace them with or to put onto a different guitar.

  • i think this should work. the two upper strings on 12-string have the same gauges as far as i know (just played once on a 12-string=

well,,,just give it a try and tell us about ;)

  • Love your lessons Justin. Thank you again for putting these up here for everyone to enjoy.

  • Good stuff, great man!
