You lot arguing the toss about who did what - sod off. I'm watching this just to see how much better the coverage was in 1997. The only criticism of any election coverage should be anything to do with Jeremy Vine!
Disgraceful (well typical for Youtube comments pages) that the comments here have turned into a political mud-slinging contest. I watch these videos because I find elections fascinating and I am too young to remember this particular one.
The 97 election one of the worst for the conservatives but the thing is labour did okay for a few months then they just fucked up so much im a bit mad that the conservatives did not win in 2010 but still labour are finished
@aeronuk1 He didn't misrule, Blair was actually a very good PM, he was correct on allmost all accounts except the Iraq war. He improved education and the NHS incredibly.
@ToaJoe Our manufacturing industry declined more under Blair than under Mrs Thatcher. He let in five million immigrants into our already overcrowded island. He corrupted the political system with spin and slease. He nearly bankrupt the economy by failing to regulate the banking industry properly. He practically turned us into a police state, I could go on and on but youtube isn't really the place for political debate since you only get 500 characters to reply.
@ToaJoe Didn't misrule there where 20,000 less beds for the NHS and 9,000 less teachers im sorry but a large majority of people thought blair was rubbish at the job.
lol.. on a serious tone, unfortunetly not. The unpopularity of the government matchs that of 1997, but Cameron has not the support of Blair... If Cameron wins in 2010, it will be a Labour loss, not a Conservative victory...
@gopconservative78 forgot to add that is a completely unbiased view! I'm very much a floating voter at the moment but I'm confident nonetheless that that will be the result!

Make no mistake they are still marxists. For the past fourty years (and particularly the last 12) the left have been using the subversive tool of cultural marxism ie, overthrowing society from within by destroying it's cultural pillars.
The Italian revolutionary Antonio Gramsci wrote that western society could be overthrown by destroying it's pillars of religion, the family, nationalism etc. Along with divisive multiculturalism and feminism it's more than any society can withstand.
hahaha! your comment is too vague to possibly even take seriously. oh and i'm sure the country is in the state its in due to feminism! haha, good one.
The worst thing i can say about New Labour is this.
I was there cheering when they won & i was a first time voter.
Now i have lived under Socilism, mass immigration for political gian, mass taxes etc etc. 30 yrs old and despise Labour, really really despise it & them.
I AM NOW A TORY,& CAN'T INVISAGE EVER VOTING LABOUR IF I LIVE TO BE 100.
if the Tories had won in 1997 there would be no minimum wage, it would be illegal to openly speak of homosexuality positively in schools and Scotland and Wales would not have the powers to govern themselves that they do today.
I am not a Labour voter but Labour at least stand nearer to what I believe is morally right than the Tories do.
binstig is quite right. Unfortunately, for this country and MOST of our people, Labour on economic policy was TOO TORY, "held hostage" by fear...
the Media, more than the Tories. When Vince Cable warned of economic disaster to come, he was derided as "gloomy". Now, those who would let everything rip in pursuit of their greed are getting excited that the Tories will get back in. Nothing against Mr. Cameron personally, but I fear - things could actually get worse. Be careful who you vote in!
Which is to say..It would be so nice if there was more comments about the historical context and the graphics/presentation and less about general political arguments that could be rehashed endlessly somewhere else (like a politics blog) It gets so the rah rah I like the Tories rah rah I like the other lot overshadows the real point of these clips being here...sigh
Man..I'm gonna get red minused for this..but I watch the Election clips for historical/tv history value, it's kind of saddening how so many partisan political types use the comment sections of them to propagandize for their parties. I think youre find that between 1974-1979 the economy grew by 1.9% per year on average and unemployment never exceeded 1.6 million. I also dont remember seeing homeless people in Southern towns like you did from the 80s onwards i guess its just perpespective
I agree with you completely. Its a very scarey thought I mean normally when you go into an election you have oppositions but theres no oposition. Its scarey that their might be some people out there who will just blindly vote Tory without looking at their policies which they dont have!
Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, though a hard loyal party member, Labour has been quite weak with regard ending the time bomb economics that the Tories used to get rich quick. My real concern is what they will do if in the next election they win, they will "let the market sort itself out" and "mass unemployment will be a small price to pay to lower inflation" and people who want a job should "get on their bike". Thatcher was a tyrant with leaderships skills, Cameron is a tyrant without.
I have grown up through Labour and it is nowhere near as bad as bad as the horror stories I hear of people growing up under Thatcher. Labour may have caused economical problems for the people of this country, but it is a useless Tory party that would truly paralyze the country.

As the political system in the UK can be described in LAW as an ELECTIVE DICTATORSHIP!
As that is precisely what it is:
A BROWN Dictatorship
A CAMERON Dictatorship
A CLEGG Dictatorship
Every one a FREEMASON
From BULLINGDON at Oxford to control of the country by support from ROTHSCHILD
It was either a MANDELSON or an OSBORNE
Remember the meeting in CORFU - the holiday home of the ROTHSCHILDs that control UK politics
