what I love most about this vid (and I've watched it like 15 times) is that he could be playing to 100,000 ppl or 10 ppl, and he'd give just as much to the song. LOVE IT!
@plasticwrapcharlie Usually when I pick up the phone during a set it's to answer and say, "WHY AREN'T YOU AT DAVE'S SET!?"... So I'll give dude the benefit of the doubt.
there are at least ten people in this video I would love to beat senseless, ranging from the bobblehead around 4:00, for his actions in the 3:50 area, to the lady in red conversing throughout with the lady in black before walking away. Don't they know when theyre in the presence of a deity
Sometimes I wish dave would can his band and just go back to old school stuff. Ever since steve lillywhite it's not as good , very few albums, and too popish.
@jacktorse28 Considering the entirety of his music is the way it is because of the whole band's influences, not just his own, he shouldn't be 'canning' anyone. Also, he only produced music with them behind him, so I'm not sure what you could mean by 'old school stuff' without the band. And how do you account for songs like Squirm, Seven, and Lying in the Hands of God? How are they too 'poppish' for you? Some mainstream hits doesn't make him a poor artist; it makes him an extremely smart one.
@simplecreativity Maybe I got carried away about "canning" his bandmates. Perhaps it was because Some Devil is the only album I've really enjoyed in the past decade of his(theirs). Since Lillywhite their music is markedly different and I'm not sure how anybody could deny this. I really miss Dave's acoustic guitar which defined their 1st 3 major label albums. To me as a fan they peaked with B4TCStreets and since then i can take it or leave it.
@simplecreativity Maybe I've outgrown their sound. This is not to condescend them or their current fans. But their loyal following seems to stay young through the years. Not grow older like others band's followings do which is good for them because therein is the money. Regardless, their latter material doesn't touch me like their earlier stuff and this hasn't happened with other bands I thought reigned supreme over the rest of the music world at one time or another.
great job by dave but thumbs down to the ungratefull douches in the back for not paying attention to the amazing performance, especially the chick with the puffy hair
this song is from a time where dave was in a personal low.. he was confused on weather or not all his fame and fortune has currupted him.. truly amazing what can come from such a strong mind going thru such a devestating struggle whithin himself
Hmmm the link didn't make it attached to the comment, you can type in "Bartender Folsom Field" and it'll come up. He plays a W15 Taylor Walnut 12-String, its amazing and he has 3 of them side stage in different tunings as well as 6 identical Taylor 914CE guitars each for Alternate tunings and back-ups.
this must have been a rare occurrence. i don't want to intentionally doubt you i just, haven't seen this ever and i can say i've been to/watched my fair share of dave concerts... he plays both don't drink the water and bartender at radio city on 6 strings.
Ya for sure, when they do their acoustic tours they mainly play the Martins and Dave plays his Taylor GS too. If you seen them play over the past 10 years they use to use the Drop-D tuned 12-String a lot, but now days they or he usually rocks the 6-String Taylors.
Yes, Don't Drink The Water and Bartender are in drop D, usually played with his 12-Strings. He does some really cool things with Raised-B Tuning too, he's pretty much amazing! For his Raised-B tunes like "Stay or Leave" or "Baby Blue" you can capo on the 7th or 8th fret and attain a pretty similar timbre.....
This seems to be one of those videos that has been lost over the years in respect to the larger realm of the new mainstream music world b/c of it's "home video" appearance but also simultanioiusly keeps it authentic and as real as anything bringing Dave closer to his fans and the rest of the world. This will resurface in the future as one of the best individual performances by not only Dave but anyone with a guitar and a mic, ever. Thanks for capturing it in time forever.
He acts stupid and crashes everyone around with the deepness in his speaches.. this is the role he's playing, making the most amazing point, dont judge only by what you see...
Yes. He does play the HD-28V. But that is his signature model. The DM3MD. Quite possibly the finest guitar that Martin has ever made, and not just because it's the Dave Matthews model.
I have to say, I am a huge fan of Dave and the DMB... my favorite band, bar none... but he does look a little baked. At times, well frankly MOST of the time, his eyes are half closed. But hey, if the guy want's a joint? He's a living legend, give him a break... and a joint. You know?
I'm not dissagreeing with you that Dave still sings well. But to say he sings better now then during the early 90's is just wrong in my opinion. I think maybe you should watch some vids around the 90's. No dissrespect just differnce of opnion. PEACE.
Yeah, definitely love watching Dave in all his singing decades. 90's had younger, higher pitched nasal tone, 00's has deeper, fuller tone. Dancing always.....
This comment would make since if Dave was "so young then". This was just a few years ago and he sounds the same today as he did during this performance.
thats awesome. I saw Dave and Tim last year in Seattle at Key Arena. That's gotta be the coolest place ive seen him yet. I'm hoping to go to the Gorge this year!
please explain how he is a fraud again... ? last time i checked, having talent didn't make you a fraud.... by all means, correct me if i'm wrong tho....
awesome.. this song gave me chills i wanna see dave this close. i seen him twice but on lawn seats. still one of the best concerts ive seen. love the ways he dances!
I was at that concert and have I think over an hour of footage...he played WAY longer than anyone expected, and there must have been only about 300 of us there.
It was truly amazing hanging out 10 ft away from him and listening to him play...Ive got it all on hi-8 but nothing to get it onto my computer with!
it was a fund raiser for a eco. organization in seattle.
it was supposed to be a secret, but the newspaper leaked a paragraph long blurb in the middle of one of the events pages that he might be there, so i figured why not go check it out...they didnt lie!
DAVE for president! Dave is a good man, you can't complain about how much money he makes, for one thing we're the ones buying the albums and going to shows...and, he gives so much of it away to people and causes the deserve it...I support dave 100%, not just because I've been listening to his music since I was a kid, but beacause he really stands for something great.
at around 2:55, he changes the chord a measure too early and just shouts through the mistake... even when he's imperfect, he still sounds better than anyone else.
Dave thinks his views are the best? Not at all, he's even stated that much during a lot of D&T shows. Dave and DMB do so much good for the world, whether it be the environment or various charities. They offset 100% of the emissions their buses put out during tour.
Also, think about Hurricane Katrina, and New Orleans. How many homes has our own U.S. Govt. been able to erect? Well I know DMB has helped build over 300, and re-build musicians villiage!
I forgive Dave for coming off hard headed, but he believes he and us can make a difference. I don't know Dave, but I do know someone close to and Artist that has opened for DMB quite a bit. And from what I gather he is a very comedic guy with hope of a better life for our children, and childrens children!
This is how arrogant Dave is.....He purchased over 1,200 acres of land making up 5 farms around Virginia Tech University to ensure that concrete and fast food restaurants don't go up! Bet no one heard about that, and therein lies the problem, you only hear what the media chooses to let you hear. There is so many donations made by DMB as well as others that go completely silent in the minds of the media, but they are quick to let you know whos dating who.
i agree with jiggity, Dave is a great guy. You can't really say hes an arrogant prick. But he does have strong opinions about most stuff and i don't think he is willing to see things from other ppl's view. But doesnt everybody do that?
if you like DMB, i would like to invite you to watch our home produced live music videos...our music is original and we hope to capture the listener who is appreciative of home grown organic music and jammin...tell us what u think and subscribe to qeqo23 if you would like to be updated on more live entertainment and when we finish our cd.....thanks
must disagree with tsteffen. i think he's still in touch with his founding audience. you may be right to a degree, but i think he's one of the least corrupted of all big artists. i think his lyrics explain a lot of it... maybe just my interpretation.
arrogant prick? He lives in a suburban "normal" house in Seattle, gives most of his tour money away, rarely turns down autograph signings, self-depricates every chance he gets, thanks fans profusely during concerts, ...the list goes on...He doesn't seem like an arrogant prick to me. Just because he's speaks strongly about preserving the environment doesn't make him a prick.
what I love most about this vid (and I've watched it like 15 times) is that he could be playing to 100,000 ppl or 10 ppl, and he'd give just as much to the song. LOVE IT!

i agree with jiggity, Dave is a great guy. You can't really say hes an arrogant prick. But he does have strong opinions about most stuff and i don't think he is willing to see things from other ppl's view. But doesnt everybody do that?

must disagree with tsteffen. i think he's still in touch with his founding audience. you may be right to a degree, but i think he's one of the least corrupted of all big artists. i think his lyrics explain a lot of it... maybe just my interpretation.

he does that ending in don't drink the water, the falsetto kinda thing he does is in the rhythm and stuff as dont drink the water.

very talented and love his music. but he is an arrogant prick who thinks his views are the best!
tsteffen 4 years ago
arrogant prick? He lives in a suburban "normal" house in Seattle, gives most of his tour money away, rarely turns down autograph signings, self-depricates every chance he gets, thanks fans profusely during concerts, ...the list goes on...He doesn't seem like an arrogant prick to me. Just because he's speaks strongly about preserving the environment doesn't make him a prick.

An agnostic god...

I don't think he's agnostic anymore. Once his daughters were born, he didn't believe in that.
