  • Is he using american grip or german grip? D:

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahya i dont particularly like travis barker, but you are so wrong, he practiced snare drum for hours and hours every day for years. hes technically brilliant

  • thanks!!!

  • i don't understand one thing but the unaccented strokes are all of wrist?

  • @dodybattaglia There are different takes on that. Some say it's purely rebound, others say they are completely wrist and I say it's something in between, depending on how fast you play. When playing fast you can't play every stroke completely with your wrists,(too slow), when you play slow rebound becomes awkward. I think the important concept (which everyone names) is the movement of your arm, which starts a new stroke while you are playin unaccented notes via the whipping motion.

  • Dear God, we trade Travis Barker and Joey Jordison for Jim Chapin and Joe Morello.

    Amen.

  • he's already dead but im still studyng theses videos

  • Jim is a legend! Everybody should study these exercises...

  • travis barker who ??

  • Esse véinho é FODA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He'd be better if he wasn't american

  • Such amazing sound quality! Every single stroke is easily heard....

  • masterclass drumming!

  • He was such a gentleman. Shame he's gone.

  • ive never seen a drummer in a suit

  • @MrKilltastic It used to be that playing music was an occasion worth dressing for. You can still find it, but it's increasingly rare. It feels good to perform in a suit though.

  • jesus he break my head, jim chapin legen alive

  • lol my teacher, who was only a few years older than me (though still RIDICULOUS on drums) thought the traditional rudiments were a waste of time.

i use the Moeller on a completely amateur scale, but i find it more helpful to practice the technique along with practice books (e.g., Cirrone & Wilcoxen). it's a waste of time for me to use the traditional rudiments for the sole purpose of practicing the Moeller.

that being said, I'm sure Chapin only showed the rudiments as a very general example.

  • @DrJuice1 Only a few years older than you?? So you must be about 9 years old then. If your teacher is telling you that rudiment study is a waste of time, get a new teacher--fast!!!!!!

  • best drum'n bass drummer

  • @WysysaczCiepla what??

  • Comment removed

  • LOL @ seeing travis barker typed on a Jim Chaplin video.

  • Let's look at his playing in awe, but let's consider how much time he's put into getting to this level with appreciation. What an amazing accomplishment. A true legend.

  • lol I just started playing drums so I dont even know what he means with a paradiddle but lol.. Would think that he is such a good drummer by just seeing him like that in a suit on the street? wow. :D sick speed

  • @kichermann Paradiddle = rlrr lrll

    Double paradiddle = rlrlrr lrlrll

You can speak the name of the rudiment as you play it, which helps with understanding it.

    Diddle is the double.

    Does that help?

  • @pinkfloydfan417 helping to understand what a paradiddle is , yeah , thanks, i will work on it )

  • Every drummer needs to watch this. There's so much to get out of this video. I'd pay 25 dollars for it, and I'm a pretty cheap bastard. Oh, and for the 3 retards that disliked it.....you know nothing about music.

  • it seems like older drums were much better in their rudiments and having both power and speed versus todays drummers

  • The master showing us how it's done. Like his positive approach too.

  • Ha! I love the old school guys and military drummers. You just can't beat fundamentals. That's why Buddy Rich is KING!

Can't wait for my six year old to master this one...

  • Had a drum lesson with Jim Chapin, dude is the man.

  • Pure magic. And his expresions, omg, is he Christopher Walkens father xD?

  • all you have to do is go to scopions84's profile youll find nick jonas playing drums....you will find his opinion on drumming means nothings.

  • when you first look at him you wouldnt expect him to be a drummer. Wearin a suit and shyt

  • I could watch this all day

  • this guys paradidle is sick

  • he's my hero

  • This whole "Speed, Power, Control, Endurance" is mother of all drum instructional videos!

    Jim ChapIn ROCKS!!!

  • R I P

    Jim Chapin

  • What an amazing teacher he was!

    RIP Jim

  • his last words "it makes you feel accomplished" dope

  • this is just insane

    crazy good free instruction

  • jesus old man...dont melt the rubber

  • OMG @ 2:06 and on...

  • Amazing technique. Amazing man.

    RIP.

  • Stop saying what Chapin "is" and "isn't" - he passed away last year in July, until which time he was the ONLY living person to have been taught by Sanford Moeller, the guy who invented the moeller technique.

  • A living lend folks...no joke here...this man is drumming s best kept secret! I did a clinic with Dennis Chambers and this man showed up in a room of 400+ drummers. ALL eyes and hears went on him when he spoke from the back of the room...nothing he says about drumming is untrue and he has worked or played or taught everyone from Buddy Rich to me...Thank you Mr. Jim Chapin...one of a kind.

  • we do these in drumline.

  • It's so funny to hear Jim Chapin and Travis Barker in the same sentence.

  • Travis Barker is a pop-punk drummer..Jim Chapin is an educator- drummer..or drummer-educator..both are good though :-)

  • don't compare Travis Barker to Jim Chapin. Please, I love Travis. He is the father of all the pop-punk drummers today, BUT, he is nowhere near the technical skill of this old friend of ours.

  • You are funny... or just a child living in ignorance. This guy has sold millions of books. one of the best teachers.

  • dude traivs barker is one of my favorite drummers. But its jim chapin.

  • you suck

  • ha ok this guy is better than travis at rudiments bar none

  • rip

  • Man this guy is amazing

  • i miss jim :(

  • And Travis Barker learned from Jim. Figure it out kid.

  • who?

  • whos travis barker?

  • Travis Barker=good for Blink-182, but technically a horrible drummer.

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahya "technically a horrible drummer" is unreasonable; there is something to appreciate in everyone, including travis barker! :)

  • Not the technique in his hands haha. His overall use of the drums is bad :p

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahya arf arf arf

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahya Thank You! Somebody Else Who Is A Student Of The Game Finally Agrees W/Me!

  • Student of the game? haha

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahya Don´t be silly.

  • I'll die, and so will everyone else..... but what does that have to do with drums? You fail, how embarrassing for you!

  • You misspelled asshole, train and faggot.... i guess thats what happens when you like travis barker.

  • he is dead, show some damn respect for a drumming legend you twit. go back to blink 182, they seem more suited to your limited musical knowledge. now go away boy

  • @sidneyblair Okay, how the fuck do you not know who Travis Barker is? Hes like Joey Jordison. Okay, not all that hes cracked up to be, but everyone and their mothers cat knows about him.

  • I know who travis barker is. I only said that to get a reaction from travisbarkerulzz.

  • @sidneyblair dude r u retarted travis barker plays 4 blink 182 he is only the most recognised talented drummer of the fucking world rite now lol your a fucking moron travis can put this guy away with 1 fucking arm on a drum set this guys all about that fucking rubber drum he is hitting

  • @scopions84 wtfff.... you are a dipshit. that is alll.

  • @scopions84 You apparently missed my sarcasm, thats too bad. I'd love to debate Travis with you and all, but I can tell you're not a drummer.... or if you were, you're very new at it. I might change my opinion though if you can just name 2 positive things that Travis has contributed to the drumming community... but until then you would just be wasting my time :)

  • exactly.

  • rkerwayfuckingmore

  • Still alive in every thing about drum...

    Rip Jim.

    From Brasil.

  • RIP

  • RIP

  • WOW ......he's so fast!...and accurate too

  • legend

  • why is it that whatever video i see of a jazz drummer, there is always some stupid jackass called "travisrulezand-i-wanna-have-his-babies" trying to convince us that he is better than these legends. any of these guys buddy rich, jim chapin, joe morello could kick barkers ass with their left hand on their leg. the funny thing is, travis barker said when he retires he wants to play jazz.

  • haha point proven

  • RIP Jim, another amazing drummer gone :(

  • pure speed and power and great technique

  • This guy is a Legend!! Taught pros like dennis chambers Tony Royster Jr and shits turds that play better toilet tunes than Travis f%$%#&* Barker or the whole blink182 band....by hiself one hand behind his back with a snare let alone a whole kit.

  • Simply The Best

    Better Than All The Rest

    Better Than Anyone

    Anyone I Ever Met

  • Had a lesson from him once. He was a nice guy.

  • I can't believe he died....I just found out today. I almost bought his book recently (but didn't think I was ready for it), now I really would love to have it.

  • DAMN! He's got the Chops.

  • holy shit i didnt know he was dead.

  • smokin'

  • you will be missed always jim

  • thanks a lot man!

you teached me something more than drumming.

    :) RIP dude

  • rest in peace master your energy trough your music will never die

  • Bye Jim RIP

  • I thought my stick control was amazing...then I started watching his videos. I'm awed by him and amazed. I now realize I'm not even close to is talent. He does it like nothing.

  • An absolute legend, RIP x

  • Great Teacher.

  • rip jim

  • R.I.P jim

  • r.i.p jim

  • RIP. So great drummer.

  • RIP Master

  • Rest in Peace!

  • Wow awesome.

Excuse me while I go practise some more.

  • Yes Sir A feeling of accomplishment!!

  • im drunked and your the god

  • i think if joe and travis get people into drums it's amazing , they are great drummers, but it is important to give credit to all those drummers that came before them and not just that but credit to all the unknown talent that exists today , being prejudice towards jordinson and , barker is as being prejudice to capin or morello, prejudice is prejudice

  • I just think it's stupid to say "Travis Barker is the best Drummer in the world" (like all the kids do...). I mean, look at the famous TB snare solos and then watch the Chapin video again. He's been doing way faster and more amazing things as a warmup back in the 50's, and everybody is talking about Barkerboy and how "creative" his basic rudiment marching "solos" are.

It's not prejudiced to face the facts.

    Greez

  • i saw a speaker one time , he said it takes years of experience to realize that main stream stuff isn't always the best stuff , kids will be kids and will always follow the mainstream , but the great stuff in the world is past the surface , and guys like you and me are extremely lucky to know of them , jim chapin is clearly a better drummer over all then both those guys , but maybe those kids need to explore barker and jordenson before they can ever appreciate that,

  • i agree with newbreed of drummer i know my roots rock on

  • probly the fastest hands ive ever seen

  • you forgot joe morello

  • I remember seeing him at a drum clinic and after gregg bisonette played jim said "his playing was just delicious" his blue binder book will last you forever..get it then play metal..

  • You know one thing that really annoys me. Say there's a drum convention and all the who's who of drumming will be there. You'll get all these idiotic 13-20 year olds who'll flock to see travis barker and joey jordison, and wouldn't even have heard of Chapin. And if they saw him, their toolish prejudice would kick in and they wouldn't even look twice and this master. It's situations like that which will eventually kill any REAL individual talent of the future. Never forget your roots.

  • amen

  • I had studied with Jim at the Long island Drum Center back when it was in Bellmore NY. Jim's Jazz book is an amazing tool.

  • Great drummer! Although he looks like he could be a Kennedy...

  • hell i'm related to him, and i think he's a master. (distant relative lol)

  • This is some good ass learning material!

  • superb drummer,, but i cant help thinking he looks like someone in the 80's tv series dallas.

  • dude, larry hagman can RIP it!

  • Does anyone no where you can get the DVD for this in the UK?

    I love this man.

  • Geez not too good is he. Back to square one for me! lol

  • a master

  • Amen to your comment. Jim, a master indeed.

  • jesus christ, and he did all that in a SUIT

  • favourited bitch

  • heh, yea!

  • i thought my chops were pretty good... I feel like I'm back at the beginning.

Humbling video! great to learn from- thanks!!

  • I just pooped myself

  • lol

  • I did NOT have sexual relations with that woman.

  • hahaha

  • Actually--knowing Jim--he probably DID.

  • Bill Clinton.

  • how dare you

  • maybe... but i think he's just concentrated. he must have practised that stuff like mad to become that fast. he should know by heart what he is doing

  • he's reading notes

  • I want to learn traditional grip myself but I wont want to hurt my hands. I can get my thumb to rebound the stick and I don't slice my strokes either but I have a hard time getting rebound at tap heights and making my left strokes sound like my right.

I dont know where/how to find a credible teacher.

  • I'd say just practice the wat you find it comfortable to play, don't cling to one particular way you saw someone use it. The key is practice. Although if you have a gig coming up, I'd wait with beginnig with trad

  • Anyone can help me find a good video on proper hand positioning?

  • for traditional grip or what do you mean?

  • Matched Grip.

But I've always kinda wanted to learn Traditional grip though.

I need a video that shows the underside of the hands in any position because NO videos have stressed that so far. I don't know why either, cause that's super important too.

  • Traditional, first of all looks cool! It also requires less power. Often I can do diddle rudiments faster with traditional grip. Flams are also more easily played because the left hand provides a good angle. But, in drum set, its hard to move around the kit. The traditional grip isn't as sturdy as matched grip either, meaning that its more likely you'll drop the stick. These differences don't really affect you at all.

I suggest learning both grips because you will gain stick control and chops

  • Pure wisdom.

  • Make's it look easy,but hey....that shit it tough!

  • It is!!! I've tried it just like how he does it, and it is really hard! Just need more practice!

  • That man's got style. I think his expression really comes through in his playing. As a side note, have any of you noticed that many of the notes that he plays with his right hand is in a very old style grip. Check out how many of the notes are played with the fulcrum of the stick at the pinky. That's some real ancient style playing used to conserve energy on long marches. Bet he learned that from Sanford.

  • Did you notice that his fulcrum wasn't even between the index and thum? His index is hanging off and the fulcrum was between the middle finger and thumb - I saw a video of Dave Weckl explaining how it gives a more relaxed and open sound.

  • with that fulcrum at the pinky, i was waiting for him to bust out the "fan grip" with the sticks almost pointing at each other. his book on hand-foot independence for jazz drumset is crazy awesome, by the way...

  • i've kinda used the moeller without really knowing it. it just makes sense to use it! and this excersize really helps.

  • smooth explanation, he explains very clear the exercises. I've always wondered how Jim Chapin played when he was young, if he's a machine at his age! now right away to the kit.

  • No substitute for a great teacher. This man is awesome.

  • thanks Jim for teaching me i am 9 years old.I want to learn the stuff you did.jodie

  • Moeller speaks through the master....

It really feels like dancing...after a month of hard practice!Easy-Relaxed-and focused, the way to do it.

  • I want to get this down.

  • I want to get this down.

  • Brilliant! thanks for posting this! this helps me out alot!

I'm a natural at the moeller technique.

  • got any tips?

  • I'm learning from a student of his student current, Dom Famularo's student Stephen Flinn.

  • Jim chapin one of the gods of drums!!!

  • Supreme Master

  • Good material! Thanks for upload.

  • I just posted it on Youtube, its actually from drummerworld, com but since it wasn't here i decided to upload it
