It's great that he made something that didn't sound like Floyd, cause then when i need to hear something else than Pink Floyd i can always hear Roger Waters
This was the first time multiple television screens were combined to form one giant image, aka the "megatron." Waters was frustrated with the inability to project images entirely across the wall during THE WALL TOUR in 80-81, so he used this new technology for the slot machine affect during this 84-85 tour. Once again, Floyd changed the way we see concerts and well, how we use technology for mass spectacle.
@declanp1 Just listen to his singing in this clip and then listen to the album. They are absolutely the same exact thing. Roger simply doesn't have the vocal control that Gilmour or many others have. It's well documented that he had to record songs line by line, take after take to hit the right notes. He's just limited, that's all.
@declanp1 Do a youtube search for Roger Waters 2006 rock in rio and you'll see several clips where RW's real vocals are mixed poorly with the backing track.
@RobertLichter I did and couldn't see anything. I have listened to the album hunderds of times. I've also see Roger quite a few times and he's amazing! His voice is unique. It's no tape. I guess Dylan is "limited" also?
@declanp1 Well of course Dylan is limited! You can't say Bob Dylan has a large vocal range! Am I saying he's untalented? Shit no! I love Waters, too! But Dylan doesn't pretend he can stilll hit the notes. Nothing against RW's songwriting and produced albums. I'm simply stating that he used to be able to hit notes with much better accuracy and he enlists the help of tapes for some songs.
@declanp1 Specifically Fletcher Memorial and Have a Cigar. Do a google search for "open letter to Roger Waters" and click the first link. I did not write it.
@RobertLichter CLARIFICATION: I jsut want to mention that I do NOT think he lip synced this entire song. I am only referring to the first 1:07 or so. The quieter parts, I believe are live singing. The first part of this song (and others) is clearly a tape.
@RobertLichter It depends on your definition of limited. Every singer is limited in one sense or another. Anyway, I do hear some vocal assistance at times, but who cares. Roger and Pink Floyd are studio musicians. It's impossible to replicate live what they did in the studio and still sound authentic.
Respond to this video...True, he could do a scaled version of his songs and sing them differently, ala Dylan, but most people want to hear the songs the way they remember them from the album. I don't hold it against him. You'd be surprised how many artist do this. Maybe he lost his voice and didn't want to cancel shows?
It's from the same tour and he clearly isn't lip synching. I can hear a backing track, but he's singing. I think he was having problems with his voice on this particular night. Regardless, we all know he can't sing like he used to. I'm just glad he's still touring after all these years.
@RobertLichter Thanks for sharing. I read the open letter and you know what? I saw Roger on "The Wall" tour last year and he didn't use any vocal tracks at all. The singing was all his own voice. He just lowered the keys of "One Of My Turns" and "Run Like Hell" so they would be easier for him to sing and they sounded great.
Was this tour poorly attended? Although Pink Floyd was a huge name, I don't think too many people knew who Roger Waters was. It was probably mostly the Clapton fans who showed up.
hey midwestmidnighn, i've loved this album since it came out and was able to get bootlegs while the tour was still happening. i've always wondered if i had the lyrics to this part right in my head. where in the world did you find them?
I saw this show in Philly at the Spectrum. We were in the front row, siting behind the wood railing (the hockey rink glass holder) that seperates the seating area from the floor. I just had got a nice big beer, sat down to enjoy the show. Had my beer on the railing, when the comet hit my beer FLEW off the railing and landed in my lap!
I was a counter-worker at the Meadowlands when he was there. We were trying to sneak peeks when our stand wasn't busy, but they threatened to fire us. Stand 102
the house alarm goes off. does anyone remember when jude's fingers get cut off by the chain saw and fly into the camera? i dont know if i was at THIS particular concert but i was there (for one show) to see this and i was blown away. i got to meet jonathan park too.
This was the first concert I ever saw. At the tender age of 13, I was likely the youngest person in the place. The quadrophonic sound system they used for this show was incredible, and of course seeing and hearing Clapton live was too good to be true. I've seen a lot of shows since then, but this one is still one of the best nights of my life. Thanks for bringing it all back so vividly!
Houston, TX: Mr. Ron Toon, do you have more of this concert to post? I missed this concert in Houston ( March 1985). Very enjoyable for me to see this.
Thanx Ron saw the show in Birmingham UK all videos so far have not shown the screen well, this is perfect to show my kids, I wish Roger would do a tour of just his solo stuff
I was at this very concert!

This song is awesome: the lyrics, the vocals, and the music. This is SO much more advanced than anything David Gilmour could dream up.

Oh Roger, you lip sync like a 1980's Miley Cyrus. You can't hit the high notes. We all know it. No need to go to a recording.

I said, Ooh babe, where ya been?
You bring back the feeling
The flavor of damp teenage skin
and hot afternoons by the river
spent crushing the clover
I said 'Lie down, roll over
I wanna go back there again'
Ooh baby, sweet Fassbinder lady
Where ya been?

What an under-rated song. I was eight, and my brother wanted to bring my to this show. Mom said "no."
But, I did see the Waters-less Floyd three years later at the ripe old age of 11. Would've preferred going to Waters!
