There is hardly any engine braking - it will stop when it wants to, or hits something big enough. You have no seatbelt and the front will crumple easily (fibreglass), so hitting solid things is practically suicide.

The bus companies are idiots, maybe, but I suspect they have done a cost-benefit analysis and come to the conclusion that it doesn't kill enough people to be unprofitable. Yes, they are that cynical in my experience.

4 easy steps for when a bus has no brakes. step one put the bus in neutral!. step two turn off the engine. step three pull the parking/emergency brake as its not part of the normal brake system which relies on brake fluid. i believe the parking/emergency brake acts as a backup to hydraulic brakes which would bring the bus to a halt. step 4 call a towtruck and get the passengers off the dang bus! im sure the bus company got some bad publicity for mass transit with this video.

A Car in first gear will stop faster than a car in neutral gear, because then it's weight still lets it go further than in first gear, where it needs to be powered by an engine to run.
