I actually did not know this version even existed until I heard it on LITE FM the other day. I am so used to the other version, but I actually liked this one just as much
The 80's were it...the best time in our American culture...I am ageless when I hear the music from this era... how lucky we were to be around then...such as small period in history, compared to the last 10,000 years...
One of the best songs ever. Always gets me in a great mood. Just that voice. Glad to see the inverview w/Tawny Kitaen last week. Hopefully she told the truth about no drugs for Coverdale. Said she wasn't ready for that marriage to end. Too bad.
I truly really like both versions, though the '87 album version is the best. This one is a good alternate take. I disagree with the "too poppy" criticism. There is a difference between a song being too poppy, and being very bright (musically) and melodic. This one is bright and melodic.
Stuff today tends to be over-produced and poppy. This isn't like that.
1987 album version is the best. This has too much that random synth-piano sound. It doesn't fit this song. The string synth is OK but not that pop-piano if you know what I mean. The intro of the album version is great. This should have more guitars and less synth. It's just too pop. 1987 guitar solo is better too. And that choir sucks.
@MaggaraMarine They tried to make it danceable, and way too poppy. The blaring keys in that after-chorus bridge ruin that part of the song. Great lyrically though
This was my favorite song when I was 8 years old in 1987. The radio version is the best version of this song. It ROCKS as the rock album version is too slow to start to be a hit. It's funny as Whitesnake released this in 1981 and it didn't chart.
Its not all BAD, The melodies were great, its a very shortened g/s but it was a damn good version. High Energy from the beginning and didn't drag on before it picked up tempo. Coverdale has been very lucky to work with some very talented musicians, they made HIM and WHITESNAKE a boat load of money and gave us so awesome music to enjoy. You may not like how he done things, but he can damn sure belt out some kickass lyrics!
@marcusdolby1 Agree! Sykes' style is unique. The second version has much more power, this version it's too plain & simple for me. I don't know why someone thought it would succeed on the radio in the US.
There are 3 versions of this song - the 1982 original, the 1987 redone album version, and this one which was actually released in 1988 for the radio. The radio edit is a different recording than the others, and is slightly faster tempo with more emphasis on keyboards. I like both versions but this one has a somewhat better arrangement, IMHO.
This version is much better for those times you need a "charge forward" sound to what you're listening to... Great for cruisin down a 2 lane road with the top down on a sunny day... The original version has its place in my collection too, suited best for the times when you're sittin around chillin n mourning on the good times you had but now have to work past and move on...
Thats weird how they call this the US radio version, I live in the US and usually hear the better known version and have only heard this on the radio a handful of times. I got this version on a compilation called Heart of Metal Volume 2. I like the other one better.
This version is ok... i remember it when it was playing on the radio all the time in the late 80's. I gotta say though, I like the first remake better, John Syke's guitar work is what made this album. The radio 'remake' with Dan Huff feel like it lost all its balls. Way to much keyboards sprinkling with wussy guitar work .. yuk.
Right now, I'm listening to this version the first time - man, it's AWESOME! This INTRO! Sublime, unbelievable! The whole version KICKS ASS!!! :-) AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!
@e1egyiceh0use The '87 version isn't original the '82 version from the "Saints & Sinners" is the original and the best as it had Jon Lord, Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray, Ian Paice, and of course David Coverdale. The original Whitesnake. That is my opinion.
merci de l envoi. je prefere la version originale de 82'!! chacun ses gouts! celle-ci est plus violente mais l emotion manque. le morceau reste excellent malgré tout!
Agreed.....this radio edit version is much more update. Both versions are excellent, but I listen to either one depending upon the mood I am in. Whitesnake is an awesome band.....Coverdale Rocks!!
I love this song. Man, good memorys, this song would come on when I was working on painting the jeep, along with a few other great classics, and I would be so drawn in.
This is my least favorite of the three, and I'll tell you why: It's played too fast. I've always held this song close to me, and I think the meaning comes out better on the 1982 blues rock version.
Everybody said I was nuts when I kept telling them that the video version of this song was NOT the only 'new' version. I've been telling people for years that there was another version with keys and a much more smooth, melodic guitar solo, but no one believed me. Jackasses. I dig some things about both songs, but this one has by far the best solo.
... I don't think there ever was a video for this particular version. The only vid for this song seems to be the one featuring Tawny Kitaen and the Jaguar; the version of the song in that is from the Whitesnake '87 album. I could've swore there were two versions of that video though - one that shows Adrian Vanderberg playing the entire guitar solo... but the one w/.Tawny changes scenes away from the band when the solo comes on.
they don't have a music video for this version. but they do have the video for the version on the whitesnake album and another from the original version of the song made in 1983 which sounds a little different but its a little softer than this version
LOL.. this version gets played on the top 40 stations like CHUM FM...Wasn't this song originally released in the UK like 5 years prior to this? I remember seeing some video on MM where it went much slower and showed a much younger, pre-glam version of Coverdale
... yes... first version was much slower and featured a Hammond organ - no digital DX7 synths... and the lyric, "like a drifter I was born to walk alone" originally went, "like a hobo I was born to walk alone".
... released in 1987 only for American radio stations, but was included (along with "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again" ) in the European version of Whitesnake '87, hence the addendum, "Here I Go Again - '87 Radio Mix-Edit". ;)
... musicians on this version were: Dann Huff (Giant) : all guitars; Denny Carmassi (Heart) : drums... typically unnamed studio bassist and keyboardist were also on this cut.
I can relate to the song. I never know where I am going. I can remember where Ibeen most of the time and i kinda just drift along. As for which version i like best. Its a toss up between version 3 this one, and the one off of Saint's & Sinners I like the Solo on this one and the backing vocals on this one. But Coverdale put more heart in to his vocals in the original in my opinion so i like that one 2. As for the version known as 87 Cool music vid, but distant 3rd to the other 2 versions.
Yep three version. This one, the original (1982) and the hard rock album version i think. This is the single version released in the US as i understand.
Is the album hard rock version the one used for the band's official video for the song in 1987? Because the video song seems a little harder-edged than this one. I like this version better! :)
this version is okay. I don't like the keyboard part, and i wish coverdale had done the scream at the end of the bridge like in the other version. i do like the solo and the intro though.
You people are idiots. I can't believe you think this is the best version. Vandenberg's solo blows away this version. And I don't really like the additional keyboard parts in this one at all. The intro to the album version is also missed here. I would say this is just a half-baked version of the real deal.
...classic :)

I grew up with this version so ive come to like the most out of all three. The guitar solo is so tastefull and the backing vocals really complete it.

'Twas recorded at the same time. The original version of 1987 was released in the US and a few months later this version hit the UK.

this version is okay. I don't like the keyboard part, and i wish coverdale had done the scream at the end of the bridge like in the other version. i do like the solo and the intro though.

This is my favorite version of this song. Thanks for posting...It has the back up singers in the background.

This version isn't to bad. I've heard the others so many times that the change is nice

You people are idiots. I can't believe you think this is the best version. Vandenberg's solo blows away this version. And I don't really like the additional keyboard parts in this one at all. The intro to the album version is also missed here. I would say this is just a half-baked version of the real deal.

Yup,heres the superior version. This should have been the 1 released in the uk instead of the sterile watered down version, but the vid was good.
