Hilarious! I remember it all so well! We HAD to laugh to cope with the fact this imbecile was one heartbeat away from the Presidency. Here's one of the jokes proliferating at the time: "Ever hear of Quayle bonds? No principle, no interest, and they never mature." Here's another tidbit: Talking about how he was going on a trip to Latin America he said "I don't know how I'll get by because I don't speak Latin".

The media never said anything untrue about Dan Quayle, they didn't need to, all they did was print his screw-ups, and let them speek for themselves. And Obama's slip-up, (he failed to indicat that he had been in some states multiple times) did get media coverage. And it was one mistake as opposed to dozens.

I don't think Quayle was literally elected vice president, I think Bush Snr chose him as his running mate in 1988, so Quayle became vice president when Bush Snr became president. I think that's how it works.

actually what happens is each elector that gets sent to Washington votes twice; once for president and once for vice president.so he was technically elected vice president just like the president was by the electoral college. the state legislatures can send electors how ever they want but every state (except maine and nebraska) just have winner of popular vote in their state send their slate of electors who are then bound by law to vote the way the popular vote in the state went

This resulted in a tie, and a duel, so instead of directly voting for President, we now vote for President and Vice President together. In 2000, Al Gore was elected by a majority of voters, the dispute was whether Bush or Gore got the majority of electors, not voters. The Supreme Court ruled Bush did.
