If you listen to a few different performances of "Get Out of My Life," it should be pretty apparent that Trucks usually takes that first solo in much the same manner as he does here, lying back, being economic but expressive with relatively few notes. I don't see any way that he could be accused of shortchanging himself on this particular night for the sake of this (excellent) guitarist's ego.
Being a Derek fan AND a slide player myself, I say he did a great solo, and I don't think he should be compared to Derek, he has his own style and that's cooler than trying to sound like Derek any day and Derek would probably agree. That being said I think I would be nervous to be on the same stage as Derek let alone playing a pretty damn fine solo, well done Mike Gannon !!!
It's all good and being that Mike won says something. Derek was proud that I am sure of and for him to be a guest and sit in says even more! Major thumbs up to Mike Gannon and all of DTB. A very high class group! :)
No, he didn't "hold his own" next to Derek Trucks.
Derek purposely held back and let this guy enjoy his time in the spotlight.
If he had wanted to, Derek could have unleashed a blistering slide solo and made that guy look like the rookie that he is...you know it and I know it.
Who are you? Jack Black? Would Derek Trucks "have come from under the mountain atop a dragon like steed and slayed him with musical mind bullets...and a BLISTERING solo?" Musical geeky purists can never give props....just another hater....regards, Douche
you missed the point dude...the guy got a chance to play with a star (who is obviously better) and you took the moment to hate on him. Its like me playing ball with Michael Jordan and him letting me score. Sure he'd kill me, surely I'd lose. The point is getting to play with greatness. You'd be the dude in the crowd cheering for the dominator... that's douche behavior. you know it, i know it. the end.
upstage is an odd word to use. i don't think anyone is trying to upstage anyone here. that wouldn't have really worked for the song.......mike gannon, however, did make a positive contribution to the song, as i see it. backup playing and lead playing included. in fact, as i see it mike made more contributions to the song than most of the players who sit in with dtb on this song. most are focusing on unleashing a blistering solo and thats what makes them lame
Check out his album. It is great.

wonder why he doesn't do the original b7 to 4 chord changes on this classic ... that was the whole point of the song ...

sounds like "Born Under a Bad Sign", dont you think? if they planned that, that makes the song even cooler in my opinion

Get Out of My Life Woman. Great job for this kid Mike. This had to be one of the greated days of his life.

The riff is only one note off. They're both blues songs and use the blues scale, so yes, of course they sound similar. And yes, the blues is cool.

Derek was just being a nice guy by not doing so.

Hey Greydjinn, it appears that most people dislike you, judging from the comments left on your channel.
Give Derek Trucks his propers.
When Trucks was 12 he could have outplayed this guy...the facility and depth of Truck's playing is light years beyond this guy.
As I said, he could have easily upstaged that rookie, but he held back and let him have his moment. Trucks is a genuine nice guy.

-Greg
