Ames was one of my favorite stores growing up! I used to go to the ones in Smyrna, Dover, and New Castle, DE! I even have dreams about going to the Ames in Smyrna, DE!
Man I freaking loved Ames... but commercials like these were just not the right strategy. When Ames got into the one day sale commercials, the in-your-face advertising, the "Bargains by the Bagful" slogan, it made them look cheap.
Their best advertising campaign was "We Grew Up With Better Values"... this was why Ames was such a great store. It wasn't cold and corporate like a Walmart, but the employees were always friendly, great customer service, convenient stores...
@dandaman22585 Ames had junk. Their stores were always a mess. They would repackage returned items and sell them at discount and the items were usually missing stuff. The clothing selection was targeted to old ladies. The toys were cheap dollar store type crap. Their electronics were cheap plastic made in china type stuff and selection was HORRIBLE. About the only thing worth getting there was the snacks. That is the reason Walmart is still around and Ames is gone.

I drive by an old vacant Ames every day coming home from school. Makes me sad, I loved going there with my mom.

Not really, but very close. Sounds like one of those early 90's movie preview voices too.
