  • so basically you read it right to left like saudis do ;)

  • it is very helpful。。。。 thanks a lot

  • i watched one of your vids years ago for basic nomenclature monkeys eat peanut butter....and i still use it. Thanks!

  • This guy is a teacher at my school thats so sweet

  • @LuckyTheUnicorn YOU ARE LYING, and im jealous :P

  • You are like a life saver.....have a test coming up and have been totally lost in class........Thanks for all the videos.........You are awesome as an Ochem Professor

  • @rafarodrisala hahaha yea. chemguy's correct my teacher said i can put it as butene if i want, but it's actually but - 1 - ene or but - 2 - ene ...... etc . so don't believe your teacher!!! believe chem guy!! XDDD

  • wow u r the best

  • 'Be good to the teacher and they'll be good to you' Haha Chem guy you are awesome!!

  • $SHO!! wish i had the monet to donate

  • Great, the only person that uses the IUPAC names in the recent way :D

  • My teacher said you where crazy cuz of the but 2 ene, She told me its 2 butene, but i really believe you dude . . .

  • @rafarodrisala Your teacher needs to update her notes. She's teaching you the old way, and it is now incorrect.

    Chemguy

  • @bannanaiscool Omgggg! My teacher taught me the same thing about the 2 butene. I'm scared. In Nyc, we take the regents and I don't think the regents is as advance as you. However, I believe you.

  • dear sir, you are just incredible......your interest and enthusiasm brings the same in us..!!!

  • Someone should change and revolutionize the entire naming system for chemicals and biochemicals. Some of these labels have no logic whatsoever like linoleic and linolenic.

  • not just smart, but funny :D love the Irish accent hahah

  • how do you name cyclic-alkenes. i know in linear alkenes you need to out the number where the double bond is what what do you do when you see a double bond in a cyclic structure.

  • hey i dint get that saturated n unsaturated point:-(

  • be good to your teacher. LOL

  • you awsome teacher, i find so hard to learn by taking notes down from board and study at home alone, but iv watched you on this and learned something new and it sstayed in my head. My teacher just goes too fast on things and tests us on them every morning !! Thanks man. ;)

  • hehe.. i totally thought u 'forgot' to put the hydrogen on the 2nd carbon there ;) didn't notice the 4 bonds thingee aww^^

  • where can i buy the complete system .you are the best

  • where can i buy the complete system

  • @aaron8u At my website!

  • wait so which way should i read the double bonds? :S left or right. btw these are amazing.. thank you.

  • You are the best chem guy ever best teacher i ever had i learn better than other teachers this is a very detail lesson and i learn very usefull material ....... Great lessons :)

i was planing to buy some of your advance chem videos and also the organic chemistry videos is good too, if i purchase your videos how would the videos get to me and how long it will come to me?

  • @chemistrycoolguyscom Takes just a few days to get them in the mail! Visit my website!

    Chemguy

  • Your videos truly make university/college more bearable. I can't believe how many hours I've wasted listenning to my pretensious teacher when I could've been watching your videos. Thanks a lot! You're making the world a better place!

  • I LOVE YOU. SERIOUSLY YOU ROCK.

  • is it okay 2-butene in but-2-ene...?

  • @brandonkyl But-2-ene is the only name.

    Chemguy

  • @bannanaiscool

2-butene is also ok as far as I learned. This is just the new convention, which I think clarifies nomenclature.

By the way, cool video...reminds me of the good old days in orgo.

    5 stars!!

  • @stardanny33 But, honestly, it's not ok. It's the old way, not the accepted way. Really.

    Thanks for the nice note!

    Chemguy

  • hey with the 4-methyl-pent-2-ene could it be 2-methyl-pent-3-ene or do you read right to left because the double bond is closer to the right? sorry if this is a stupid question i haven't had a chance to study it in school but this is really interesting

  • @coeur65 Yep, from where the double bond is closest to. That takes precedence!

    Chemguy

  • You are Awesome! I wish I had you as a teacher! If all the teachers were like you, the world would have so much more ambitious and smarter people! THUMBS UP!

  • Dear Chemguy, I created a YouTube account so that I could personally thank you for your videos. Also, I appreciate that you point out potential mistakes, as I did originally think to put the methyl group on the second carbon.

  • I am Indian student but realy understand all topics of Organic chem.Awesome teaching style

  • heyy..ur teaching is so great thanks a lot..i was wandering what the continuation of this video is called pleasee i need it asapp cheers

  • @xxxbenincityxxx You've got to go to my website!

    Chemguy

  • I am Indian student but realy understand all topics of Organic chem.Awesome teaching style

  • Comment removed

  • hey erm i was wondering where i could find organic chemistry part 2... i know its a weird place to ask ( organic chem 5 video) but dont no where to find it thnx...

  • @rchzen2 You need to go to my website, then!

    Chemguy

  • OK sorry if this is a silly ques but u said each carbon shd have 4 Hydrogens right? how come the first carbon on the ''propene'' has only 3 ..since the double bond is located at the last / third carbon ...

    Thanks in advance ..

  • hey, just wondering, how was but-2-ene used to be called?

  • @musicinmevain 2-butene. Nicer flow, don't you think?

    Chemguy

  • @bannanaiscool i leared it allways but-2-ene, and it comes naturally to me now.

  • Is the new method of naming specific to the US?

  • @Clurrabella It's IUPAC. It's for everywhere!

    Chemguy

  • where is organic chemistry 2 and 3 and 6

  • bute2ene! I got it! Man chemguy you are the bombdaddy!

  • When he said dont "Noo dont always think left to right sometimes its right to left" He read my mind haha...

  • Thnx for vid ! Really Helpfull

  • When you were drawing propene, did you draw the first carbon with the right about of hydrogen bonds? It looks like it only has three as opposed to 4...?

  • why 4methyl pent-2-ene ?

    why not 2 mehtyl pent-3-ene?

wouldnt that be shorter or is pent 3-ene not existing?

  • ah i think its because the double bond is more important than the branch !? so youll always start with the double bond ...got it =)

  • Pent-3-ene doesn't exist. Pentane has 5 carbons: if you draw it on the 3rd carbon from any side, you'd still have to tell its location with the smallest number possible, making it 2-pentane.

  • yeah got it thanks.. just came home from iuniversity and my organ chemistry test =) i think its about 14 of 20 points ! several points go to you chemguy ;)

  • Hehe :P. I had my chemistry exam just now and the teacher hadn't put any questions that involved naming these things. If she had done that I'm sure I would've gotten full points. All the questions were related to like, fucking polar molecules and concentration. AHHHH :D

  • @djswizzair thats what I thought too

  • Not only that you teach it... but somehow you make it funny and interesting :] Example: When you change your voice so that it would be 'someone' else XD 3:38 lol Thank you for all your help!

  • @Dig2GoldZ I meant at 3:59, not 3:38

  • so you mean 2-butene would be a wrong answer? ..

  • Right. It's wrong.

    Chemguy

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sure you were. It's wrong. But-2-ene...that's it!

    Chemguy

  • 2-butene was the old rule it is still in high school becuse it was easier to understand

  • does anyone know if chemguy has a series on chemical analysis, ( mass spectrometry, chromatography ...etc.)?

or does he usually just teach the more theoretical side of chemistry?

  • I will certainly have some mass spec stuff in the future. Mostly, it's theoretical and calculations here!

    Chemguy

  • Is this targeted to high school orgo students or college students?

  • Pretty much high school, but it should help at the intro level for college.

    Chemguy

  • I never learnt it in such a fun way......i hated chemistry...=P

  • This man is a legend!!! Chemguy for President! Thanks.k

  • awesome

  • @THINKARETE

    He's Canadian you goofball!

  • lol u like corrected what im thinking when u talk about the bonds :P

  • you are the best chem. teacher!!!!!! your lessons are so helpful!!! thanks a lot!!!!=)))

  • You make a great pirate, Chemguy!

  • I think he was trying to be scottish :P

  • can we say 2-butene ? because our organic dr. said we should do it this way!

if we have a triple bond and a double bond then C-C---C--C so we have a triple bond on the second carbon and a double on the 3rd carbon so we say 2-butene-3-yne

  • No, absolutelly not. That's the old way, and is no longer accepted. I have to change some of my old ways, too!

And it would be but-3-ene-1-yne, the only one of those that's possible for a 4 C chain.

    Chemguy

    Chemguy

  • ohh, thanks! :)

ur videos are awsome by the way !

    they help a lot!

  • That's impossible as carbon can only have 4 bonds total attached. By having a triple bond AND a double bond coming off the same carbon it has a total of 5 bonds which cannot exist.

  • Alkanes and Alkenes is actually an easy topic if you really have the intention to focus and understand it.. :) Thank you for the video, this is awesome!! Alkanes = Cn H2n+2 ~

  • Awesome.

  • THAAAANK YOU.

Your videos manage in 5-10 min to discuss topics which take my professor at least 30 minutes to cover (english is not his native language so he's horrible at explaining).

  • the bit where hes explaining about unsaturated stuff

does he mean maximum of 6 hydrogens??? coz he said carbons, confused buzz :S

  • unsaturated is anything with a double or triple bond

  • Yea he meant that it takes 6 hydrogens to saturate the two carbon molecule @ around 39 seconds

  • I am so happy to find you TOO

    graet

  • thanks chemguy! I'm soo glad I found your videos!

  • Made my life so much easier.thnk u mate

  • wasn't that C4H4 at the start (the double bond) and not C2H4 like you said chemguy?

  • no because theres only 2 carbons = C2, and four hydrogens = H4

  • no because theres only 2 carbons = C2, and four hydrogens = H4

  • blame IUPAC for making stuff confusing... =))

  • i wouldnt have given my first organic chem teacher up for the world, but this guy sure does make it interresting. and it would have been nice to know about these videos when i was studying this stuff

  • this guy reminds me of Steve Carell and every now and then he does an impression of Ray Romano

  • isnt it 2-butene not but-2-ene, i think thats how i was taught jsut checking got an exam tomorrow

  • both are correct

  • Seriously this guys blows my science teacher out of the Water! hahaha....

  • Excellent lesson!!! he is very funny and I learn something new, just what I was looking for!!!

  • Thank you so much. You did a great job on chemistry, I think you would also do a great job on AP Physics!

  • Yes! He should even do a great job on AP Biology!

  • AP Biology is more of a memorization and reading based class. There isnt much concept, so its not very hard to get a 5.

  • What are you talking about ? There are a lot of concepts in Biology that can be helpful to go through for students in uni, as 1 example.

  • Look, its extremely easy to get a 5 on the AP biology exam. I took it in sophmore year and it was really not difficult. If you take physics that is much harder that biology

  • Well, I can agree with the fact that physics is more complicated to work with than biology, but I can't agree with the fact that biology doesn't have any concepts that aren't worth going through

  • I don't know.. I found the AP physics and chemistry way easier than the bio test. Maybe it's just the free response on the bio that killed me. =P MC was ultra easy.

  • im really good at chemistry and my friends study from me but i had a confusion and u solved it thankx

  • I love Chemguy! You're an amazing teacher!!!

  • May God reward you!

  • Haha! =D agreed.

  • you're fantastic, you actually kind of make me excited about chemistry a bit because you're so excited!

  • you rock dude! do you know thermo too? how about biochem?

  • your a chemistry star lol

i think u must come to our uni and kill our doctors

they read from the slide show and if we dnt understand they read again 4 u

  • hahaha yeah kill the morons

  • haha :D .. thats funny lol... , iam still at high school....and we study introduction to organic chemistry... god the teachedr..sorry for the word.. but he is an ass!!!!

he write some organic molecules!! every lesson..and make use count pi ..and segma bonds.. and then we name it..and thats ittt!!!

  • really? that's absurd. those doctors must be super lazy, but maybe they're really old and bored? :P

  • i love ur explaination. thanks alot

  • lol worst scottish accent ever

thank you so much you put my teacher to shame

  • awesome !!! keep it up ! :D

  • Very gud!

  • wow....

thank god i found your video..

    your a life saver..

    hands down..!!!

  • very good explanation sir.........thanks again for sharing your knowledge i have taken a lot of chem teachers but u rock men..........keep making more vids. thanks again chem guy.

  • Wow, you are awesome! I'm taking this as a web class which means I had only the text to go by before I found your posts. You have really helped further my interest in and understanding of the material. Fantastic! I don't think I would do well in my class without you. Thank you.

  • why do they change the way they name things? Is it because its more convient?

  • my chem professor is really boring and dry but you make learning chemistry so interesting and fun. the majority of the concepts that I have learned from you has stuck with me.

  • man you are wounderful, its like you are the best chem teacher in the world

  • wow i like chemistry a lot now because of chemguy best teacher ever

  • what about 2-butene?insted of but-2-ene

  • Nope, that's the old way, and it's not to be used any longer.

    Chemguy

  • Up to this day I have professors using the old naming ways, so thanks for clarify it.

  • now that is what i call teaching. honestly !! school chemistry is totally different and can be very terrifying. you are actually making me learn here by getting me involved into those concepts and absorb and appreciate every aspect of organic chemistry. million thanks again. your work will be evergreen forever and forever with all doign chemitry. good luck sir

  • u so cool man!

  • Man, u have really helped me .

  • You have a inner Scotty within you sir! thank you!!

  • you are awesome at teaching, much better than my chem teacher lol

  • your teachings skills are excellent. i am actually learning this stuff

  • i really, really do appreciate your videos. i am taking organic chemistry in college and these videos allow me to grasp the concept before i attend lecture, which is a huge benefit as my professor doesn't seem to explain things clearly and i am not a good textbook learner. these videos provide me something audible and visual to absorb before i start practicing blindly. thank you very much. i am so grateful that you are giving your time in to do this for us.

  • my prof. just reads the slides.. on the computer.. why??

  • because most of them don't have the basic skills just the tops(rotten foundation as they don't understand the subject or topic well.

  • thanks chemguy,I thought you would insult me for writing a lot.

  • Chemguy, you just rock! Your videos made me laugh and you make the material easy like A, B, C! Keep on rockin'!

  • at 4:51,I didn't know why u named the methly...as 4 instead of 2(is it always necessary to start at the smallest chain?

  • Yes, it's always necessary to start at the end that give the lowest number possilbe.

    Chemguy

  • he lost me on this one>>

  • I noticed that too :D Still understood though.

  • Hey, you're good! Certainly I should have said 6 hydrogens to saturate the two carbon molecule. Thanks,

    Chemguy

  • at 0:40 are you confusing carbons with hydrogens when you say "which would be 6 carbons" ?
