impressive. alot of talent there, but the problem with cello playing solos is that the low notes dont fit well with the rest of the orchestra, or in this case, the piano.

Hmm. I've been learning ho to play bass recently. I've gone from violin to viola to help the school orchestra, and now, also to help the orchestra, I'm learning bass.... skipping right over cello might not be the best though if I wanted to learn this piece on bass. Which I WILL.

@choc4luv Just learn it using the violin part, pretend you are playing violin while playing viola. The hard part will be for the piano part having to be played a fifth lower. Good luck.

For those asking about where to get the score, I had a good music store search their publishers' catalogues and they could find no transcription for cello. I think you have to buy the original - for violin - and do your own. You would transpose it down a twelfth. I got my copy from International Music Company.

Dear Valentin

I can't tell you how impressed I was! I knew the transcription from a Schiff recording but always assumed there was some studio trickery involved to gain that level of clarity, but after seeing your clip I see it is truly possible to pull this piece off in concert. I'm a cellist based in Scotland and would very much like to learn the piece, but I cannot seem to find the sheet music for the transcription. Could you be so kind as to point me in the right direction.

i'm a violinist, not a cellist, so i have to ask...do all cellists occasionally use their thumbs so they can stretch for the next note????

yes, when they go to higher registers.

when violinists do the 7th or 8th position, they would only have to stretch their fingers coz the size of the instrument is small enough for the fingers to reach.

as for the cellist, in going to the upper registers (or in their case lower coz of the position of the way they hold it), they use their thumb to clip the strings to maintain a higher pitch while the other fingers do the dexterous episodes.

it's amazing how past cellist were able to develop a technique to make playing the cello much easier. the thumb also serves as a marker ad support when going to the high registers.
