I love books and have boxes full of them, but once I bought kindle about 2 years ago, I prefer buying digital books. I travel a lot and I don't have to haul boxes of books or heavy bookracks with me. I missed the feel of a book and but I am indifferent. I only wish they had better pdf support or better converters. Caliber does most but not for pdfs with illustrations. If anyone know better app, please let me know. I love my book and my kindle.
There's no point. Now ereaders can lend books to your friends, no matter where they are, and there's no extra taxes. Easy as hell! Sorry, but paper books did not win.
This was a good demo back in 2009, but the lending feature on Kindle has changed things quite a bit. You can lend a book to another kindle user (or anyone really, they can get a free Kindle App for their computer or phone). They get to keep the book for 14 days and the cool part is it comes back to you automatically, no chasing your friend around to get your book back :)
Go to a forest in Oregon, take a look at the ragged holes in the forest where trees have been ripped out in order to make a few paperbacks. Kindle 1 Book -1
@e4e5d4 You know how much damage the chemicals in a kindle battery are going to do to the renewable trees? can you recycle all parts of a kindle? Did you know that most books are made from recycled materials now unlike Kindles? Kindle -1 book 1
Let's look at this in a another way: What if I had an Ipod with a 1000 songs on it ? Would it be smarter for me to have a couple hundred CDs instead so I can lend one out to a friend ? Does that mean CDs win of MP3s and MP4s ???
Once people are used to these E-Readers, they'll realize how much more convinient it is.
guys lets say a book is coming out at midnight. instead of either going to the bookstore or waiting for the pre ordered book to come, the kindle automatically downloads it when they release the kindle edition (at midnight i believe) easy fast and no risk of stupid people reciting spoilers they found on the internet. plus its cheaper.
@DeathlyDavid Convenience is replacing social interaction. i think it's fun waiting in line at 11:50, sharing your excitement with fellow fans who are all waiting for the same book.
@lucyinthesky16 As if, that only works for huge phenomenons, which Harry Potter started. Nobody used to wait at midnight in book stores. Regular novels DO NOT get midnight waiting parties. I was traveling to my Grandma's (300 miles from my home) by car on the day Rick Riordans "The Lost Hero" came out and we didn't have time to go to the bookstore and wait for it to come out. Well what do you know? I downloaded it AT MIDNIGHT precisely and went on reading the entire trip.
Most of the people I would lend a book to have, or will soon have a kindle themselves. If I want to lend to them, just switch the account, download and switch back. As books can be on up to 5 or 6 devices at a time I can "lend" books and read them at the same time!
although some people are ANAL about lending books, this is the first one where the book has really won.
but i think the main argument is stupid.
the kindle does away with a physical book, but no what is inside, which is why books are good; you get sucked into them and that will still be there on a kindle. its like destroying every audio book because its not traditional.
where an audio book gives reading to the vision impaired, the kindle gives reading to the narrow minded generations to come.
It has nothing to do with being able to fly with no wings evolution and development.. do you really what to have a credit card linked subscription for READING A BOOK as well... c'mon this is just a tech flip for nerds... books are books ebooks are for storing them and make 'em indestructible
I dont want to torrent books too... tht's silly... few things give me pleasure as reading a book i read when i was a teen and find a nice fat stain i left there 10 yrs ago :)
It's funny how people respond to our commercial with all the ways that e readers are better. We are not commenting on e readers in general. We are commenting on the Kindle. You guys don't really pay attention do you?
Many use a brand name as a genreric term. For instance, there was a time when people refered to refrigerators as frigadaires. They were not referring to that brand but rather rifrigerators in general. In addition, many people have the same complaints about readers in gerneral that you have toward the Kindle.
People feel the same way about the Kindle that people once felt about the Wright Flyer (if "men" were meant to fly, God would have given them wings) or Ford's horseless carriage (Get a horse). Just like all good inventions, the Kindle will come into its own despite the detractors.
@copperwalrus I would rather say it is more like snail mail and email. I email a lot but sometimes I write letters too. I read a lot on kindle but I buy books too. Let two things coexist peacefully, there are no winners or losers here...
You may not be able to share a Kindle document, but other devices support a more open format. For instance, I can down load a book in pdf or txt format onto an SD card or flash drive. I can then lend you that storage device and you can read it on your computer. This is not a comment on the Kindle, but on the limits of the present technology.

The nook actually can lend a book though it's limited.
I consider e-readers mostly a replacement for magazines and cheap paper backs.
Anything expensive or very important I get the dead tree version.

Oh whatever! Like you'd totally flip the script if the opponent of traditional print were The Sony Reader!

The ebooks are better because you can torrent the ebooks and get them for free. It adds up once you torrent enough books.
