I had the same problem. Touchscreen wasn't responding. Reset it holding the home buttons. Still nothing. How I got mine to work was repeated this, but with the iPhone plugged into my Mac. Give it a shot, sorted mine out. How it helps.

i have the same problem but its not water damage. i took the lcd screen off my itouch to fix the audio jack and now the screen doesnt work. the ribbon in the top left corner ripped but its a second gen so that shouldnt be the issue. i have no clue what to do. any suggestions of what it could be or how i can fix it? thanks

hold the lock button and the home button simultaneously for about 30 seconds or until the screen goes blank. this will restart the device and most likely, solve the problem.

OK - I have been reading all of your comments and so far, with the exception of going to my local Apple store.. I'm pretty sure no amount of reseting, or switiching on and off will work for me.

How ever, for those who have a wet iphone, i saved mine by doing the best drying with a towel, and then sat it on my TV for two days. (its never off) the heat from tellie dried out the iphone and it worked a treat.

But now I haz no touch screen (1 week later) I gather this is why..

I had the same problem on my iphone 3g, I dropped it and a quarter inch long section of the screen was completely unresponsive. I fixed this by taking apart the screen, cleaning the digitzer, removing excess dust, etc. However, what I think did the trick is when I reconnected cable "2," the one for the digitizer to the phone. I thought that if I could secure it, it would work. Low and behold I used a tiny square of duct tape to keep it secure after it popped into place and volia, it works!!
