To settle this dispute; just about anything that disrupts the snow pack can set off an avalanche including sound, wind, a falling tree branch, an extra gram of snowfall, UV radiation, temp change, rain...etc. Theoretical question: are natural slides triggered? Answer: EVERY slide has a trigger; some triggers are fast while others take time. If you think you know everything in the mountains then you are at the highest risk. Respect natures power or risk death.

@gggrimmm some of the biggest avalanches happen on lower degree hills because the snow builds up in greater amounts, where as on steeper hills the snow slides easier and more frequently.

Those avalanches can be sneaky bastards. That place didn't even look like a danger zone. I have been lucky and haven't been caught in one yet. A lot of people that I know have. But I have been lucky so far.
That is scary. Don't go into the backcountry unless you have done an av course and checked the avalanche danger. They are unpredictable and unstoppable.
Don't cut the hill and you will not cause a slide. The rider cut the hill for 50 yds before the slide started thats why it busted loose. Hope they are ok.

Those avalanches can be sneaky bastards. That place didn't even look like a danger zone. I have been lucky and haven't been caught in one yet. A lot of people that I know have. But I have been lucky so far.

That is scary. Don't go into the backcountry unless you have done an av course and checked the avalanche danger. They are unpredictable and unstoppable.

Don't cut the hill and you will not cause a slide. The rider cut the hill for 50 yds before the slide started thats why it busted loose. Hope they are ok.
