She is the most amazeing thing that have appeared to the electronic scene as of voice and art, no need for much but she should release an entire album in her native language, this is awesome,i just wish, icelandic sounds really cool ^_^
@spookygothu tho i have yet to hear it her very first album that she recorded when she was around 11 or 12 may be in her native language however there is another album she sings almost entirely icelandic with the exception of maybe one or two songs it is called Gling Glo and it is all jazz style very good if you like bjork and if you like jazz i definately recommend it
my mum is really good with languages..she half understands swedish, norwegian and icelandic just because she speaks fluent german. it's all the same to her.. i wish i'd be the same. but i couldn't differantiate icelandic from japanese.
No, Icelandic and Finnish are as different as English and Greek. Finnish is not a Germanic language. Icelandic is the old Norse language as the Vikings spoke it 1000 years ago. This language was then the same in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. When Norwegian Vikings colonized Iceland they took their language with them. Iceland have been more isolated and therefore their language have changed less than the other nordic countries.
you're out of reallity, norwegian, swedish and danish are 'similar', but finnish is COMPLETELY different, you're friend did that, if he did, because finns are obliged to learn swedish in Finland.
@merger1987 Well, icelandic is totally different from norwegian, swedish and danish. More like those languages were a thousand years ago. But, yes, finnish is from a different language group. Slavic? Anyways :P
@anokah it's actually very similar to Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Faroese; all being Northern Germanic languages. Finnish is a Baltic language related to Estonian.
I don't think Baltic has any sub-groups, but technically it is itself a member of the Balto-Slavic branch of IE languages, much like Iranian and Aryan comprise the Indo-Iranian branch of the IE language family :]
@merger1987 Well, its not "like" norwegian, swedish and so on. It is from the german language family, thats true.
Icelandic language has been stable for the last 1000 years and is said to has kept its origin. If we, norwegians, want to find our roots we just listen to them.
Today they translate all new words into icelandic..
Its rather impossible for others to understand icelandic, but for nowegians, not to hard to learn..
@Norwegian1spirit Yeah it's good, more unique that way. Most of the western world use Latin for new words when we should've just used Old English for teh new English words. Old English is quite similar to Old Norse because, as you said, they;re from he germanic language family and were only 1000 years in the making by then.
She played this song in Dublin with just the String Octet. They stood in a corner of the stage: all squashed against each other with Björk in the middle. Awesome. She should have released this as a mix!
Djöfull (devil, heh? lol) thank you for posting this.
Olusiowa, thank you so much for the lyrics!
Thanks to Björk and Sigur Rós I had the opportunity to know more about Iceland and their language. I'll learn it one day, it's so beautiful. I'm already able to pronounce the words correctly, though.
It is not a good idea to learn Icelandic, cuz besides Björk and Sigur Rós, nobody else would speak it, unless you are fond of fishing and want to meet some fishers on an Icelandic cliff for a talk about fish and the like.
Learn Spanish, or German, or English, more useful on these days...
There are 320,000+ Icelandic speakers in Iceland and Canada alone and 2/3 of Iceland's population live inside Reyjavik, not ice-fishing out of some shack in a frozen wasteland. They may be fluent in English as well but Icelandic is not a dead language by any means. Ha.
But Icelandic is cooler, a more beautiful language than Spanish or German, even English.
And I'm sure you know it's the closest thing we have in modern times to Old Norse, I would be learning Old Norse but Icelandic is still kinda more useful, and it's nicer I think :)
Basicly I want to learn the language because I think it's one of the coolest languages in the world.
@elvisheepofdoom mi asmigo dices saber español bueno yo solo hablo latin hebreo greigo español frances e ingles pe4ro el lenguaje mas bello en el español en cuanto a todo bueno adios el islandes tambien es bueno I hope yopu undestand
I understood most of that, and wow, it's cool that you know all those languages, I tried to learn Latin but it was too hard, I'd like to learn French, maybe after Spanish, then it'll be easy to pick up.
Yes I agree! I always loved how rough it is, and contrastingly how soft and melodic it can sound when you delve deep into it, like Old Norse with a bit of rough edges sanded off, very old sounding, mythical, it shares a certain quality with Welsh.
I think it's gibberish, as there are many lines in "hunter" between the lines "how scandinavian of me" and "you sussed it out, didn't you?" and in many other songs of hers. They eventually dlightly change in some live performances...
In the english version there is one line sung in Icelandic. None of the lyric sites reflect this fact, but just listen to it carefully once. I'd love to have the Icelandic and the English piece explained if anyone can do that?
That's really strange! You'd have to rework loads of rythms doing it that way! But I like to hear both versions - Icelandic is pretty, English I understand :)
it only shows the ignorance of the english speakers, other languages have their own sounds and souls, and each of them is richer than others in its specific way
Not really, I'm learning Spanish, Icelandic and Swedish, among others of the same families, and I was shocked by how much I could understand of each because of loan words, basicly all of the Romance and Germanic languages come pretty easily (more than with any other kind of language) because of their relation to English.
For the record, I didn't mean to say that I don't like the Icelandic version. It's very pretty. I just like listening to the English version better because it connects with me more...as I can understand what she's saying.
That's a little rude to call people ignorant when they just prefer hearing one language over the other.
saying the truth I'm NOT a native english speaker. Personally I like the icelandic versions of the songs better, as they seem to come from her heart, in a way no other language could ever express. I was referring to an interview where she stated that in her songs there are parts with lyrics, and others in gibberish where she can freely sing. I've always thought those lines of all is full of love and hunter were gibberish (that's not meant as "rubbish" or "bullshit" but as "spontaneous sounds").
im an english speaker, but i prefer songs in different languages just because many songs are equally or more beautiful when you don't focus just on the words and i really really love the icelandic version, it's just so beautiful. but the sound quality is rather poor in this video to me.
i hear where she's coming from, but i agree too....i also like hearing music in other languages, like i couldn't imagine listening to sigur ros in english...it it beautiful the way it is.
