Both of my cats did that, too. Endlessly. They even defeated a strip of duct tape that I put across the opening. I eventually taped an old credit card across the opening -- problem solved.
no no no, I just got one of these myself. I'm pretty sure the cat isn't cheating. do a few test runs with it and then see if the amount you set it for actually comes out. If it comes out short that means that the "cheating" is actually the remainer of the set quantity that the cat is supposed to get. Another defect I found with this product is that the cat will tip it over easily... and the cat is able to yank the bowl out easily.
