Anyone else notice that Shan Yu is the only person in the film who doesn't give Mulan crap for being a girl? He never speaks to her derisively, and tries to kill her with the same seriousness he gives all his male opponents.
Look at what he can do!!! And his power! Hes amazing, but defeatet by fireworks after breaking trough a roof made by wood and stone, only use his head haha xD
Am I crazy, or are Shan Yu and his warriors fucking heroes? I mean think about it, his whole army got destroyed in a fucking avalanche and he's left only with a group of five or six guys, and yet HE DOESN'T GIVE UP and goes right at the heart of the Chinese Empire. That, my friends is what it means to be a brave, fucking badass. I can't think of another Disney villain who is as brave and willing to back up his/hers ambitions with actual impressive qualities.
Does anyone find it incredibly amazing that Shan-Yu can have through giant wooden pillars with a single swing of his blade? Or punch through a thick wooden door? Or jump through a wooden roof with stone shingles?
One of my favorite Disney villains :D. He's evil, serious, strong, an excellent commander, unsettling to be around, has a cool dark voice and is all-in-all very awesome ^^. That's why he's one of my favorites ;D.
@bigman1171 IMHO Huns are not direct ancestors of Mongols though lived in Mongolia. There were eastern neighbors of Huns, another nomadic people named Sianbi (Xian-bei). Eventually Huns were defeated by Chinese and its neighbors and moved west to CA and Europe. Remaining power niche was filled by Sianbi. About 100 000 hun families were did not move to west were incorporated into Sianbi empire and mixed with them. Thus huns are partial ancestors of Mongols.
@sns21274 There's a popular theory that the Huns who later attacked Europe are descended from a specific tribe of Mongolians, the tribe Shan Yu was from.
Shan Yu indeed represents a rare breed as a Disney villain. He's not funny, stylistic, foppish, absurdly narcissistic, or quirky. He's cold, ruthless, sadistic, & most dangerous of all... damn efficient at what he does. Maleficent & the Horned King were scary given their supernatural abilities, but Shan Yu (like Frollo) is frightening because there's something so real about his evil.
Most Disney villains at worst, hurt people as part of a scheme. Shan Yu slaughtered a village because he could.
Shan Yu and his men are perhaps the most realistic and serious of the Disney villains. there is absolutely nothing comical about their looks, their personalities, or the way they talk. They are straight-up warriors and soldiers. The only thing that is comical is how the falcon suddenly becomes a chicken. Other than that, Shan Yu and his boys are bad-ass to the core.
That, and Frollo as well, from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Frollo is also one of my most favourite Disney villains, along with Sham-Yu. Like Shan-Yu, he's cold and seroius to the core. He's someone that instills fear and we know straight from the get-go that we don't want to cross him.
@TheSamvadar Don't forget Sykes from Oliver and Company; he's extremely realistic as well. I'd say both Shan-Yu and Sykes are the two most realistic villains, which of course makes them so evil.
I wonder how come that PAPER fan that milan used didn't get cut by that STEEL sword Shan-Yu was using. Moreover, I'm semi-confident that Shan-Yu's overall arm strength is more than Mulans, yet she manages to wrench it out of his hands. Oh Disney.
@greener144 Most probably they were going for a general "technique vs. raw strenght" when depicting the entire conflict betwen the hun and Chinas imperial army. So Mulan and Shan-yu became embodiments of those same principles, hence she is able to match him by diverting his superior strenght with superior technique.
@Askar9992 Personally, I think that you know how for "white" people, there are all different kinds/regions/historic backgrounds. For "Asian looking" people, there are Tibetans, Mongolians, certain islanders, and eskimos in Alaska look quite like Asians too. Even northern/southern chinese people look very different
@AsianAlaskan yes, asians look very different!! it's europeans look same, for example, for me, there is no differences between germans & russians, they look same... but I clearly see differences between malaysians & mongols
idk, his character design was really intimidating but then he had this weird white commercial announcer voice. It wasn't completely unfitting but it just never matched with his scary ass look
man, modun shanyu makes me so frickiin proud of my hunnic nomad ancestors, thumbs up if u are a mongol, turk, hungarian or anyone originated from the huns...
This guy is fucked up, he is scary, most disney villains have comic side or they look funny like Ursula,or have some stupid assistant like Iago, but this guy..his eyes voice behavior..scary shit.
The Huns were regularly known for being nomadic (basically, they lived off the land mostly). That's why they had heightened senses (like when they're examining the doll). I think that due to their nomadic lifestyle, they'd have a bit more endurance ot the cold as well.
Shan-Yu is my favorite Disney Villains because I perfeir the villains that are Fighters, Martial Artists, Barbarians,& Brutes.
Like Bane & Ra's al ghul from Batman, Sabretooth, Deadpool, Juggernaut, & Mystique from X-Men, Green Goblin from Spiderman, Cell & Broly from DBZ, & Him.
@TheAbridgedGamer Despite their reputation with "disney death", alot of Disneys movies have pretty high body counts. Remember when Hades released the Titans? That sequence alone must have devestated several citys. The only thing is they never SHOW the deaths.
2:26 I LOVE that scene, where the Huns come pouring down from the mountainside, armed and on horseback, 20,000 plus strong, and Mulan has MAYBE 200 soldiers with her. And Shang says, kill Shan Yu. NUT! FATALIST!
I respected Shan Yu when I was younger due to the fact that he wasn't at all shocked that a girl managed to kill most of his army and that he refers to her as, "The soldier from the mountains", instead of, "A girl?" When he said that the look on his face was fear instead of confusion and that's when I knew he was an honorable leader.
"Stop me? He invited me. By building his wall he challenged my strength, well im here to play his game. Go! Tell your emperor to send his strongest army...Im Ready." epic
I remember watching this with my dad some years back. He didn't know what the villain's name was, so he assumed it was Attila. When he said that, I cried out "THE HUN!"
Nowadays whenever I hear Attila's name, I invariably yell out mentally THE HUN!!!
@zydarking Atilla lived hundreds of years and THOUSANDS of miles from where this stroy takes place, central and northern China. Like saying Argentina is the U. S. A.
@ARP7777777 Lol, I know that. It's just that in the modern mind, the term Hun either conjures up images of Attila's hordes ravaging anything & everything in sight, or the quintessential German soldier of the last two Wars. S'all.
Wow...it takes one HELL of a woman to charge off alone toward an entire army of muscle-bound, power-hungry men, with only a cannon and a sword for protection.
Somehow, he reminds me of Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda movie

"Nice work gentlemen, you've found the Hun army." That line gave me goosebumps when I was a boy.
He easily is one of the most frightening Disney villains.
